Tint, what's the word on typhoon Chanchu?  You guys under any threat there in HK?

Thanks for asking.

The word is that it is going to be very bad.  It looks to be a direct hit and the wind speed is the highest we have had in many years.  It is suppose to land very close to Hong Kong tonight or tomorrow morning.

Strange enough the weather is still calm as ever today.  I just played tennis in the sunshine.  The waves on the ocean looked like moving mountains though, so we know it is coming for sure and preparations are being done.

The rivers are supposed to crest tonight.
Personally, I got off very easy, basement just became flooded.  I set up a pump, and all is dry now. (in fact, that's when I discovered the huge thing of leather :))   Just down the street though is like the photo in that article.


And good luck with the storm! How bad are typhoons like that... I mean, what kind of damage is expected? I really know nothing about them

Would that neither yourself nor anyone dear to you be touched by this whirlwind, though it will split your city in half.

I live in Gardner, MA although I work in Worcester ( and I own property in Fitzwilliam, NH. ) Aside from the fact that we are sick of the damn rain we seem to be OK. About the only trouble I had was on Route 140 near Mount Wachusett. Do you know the spot where you have a nice view of the mountain because you are looking across the reservoir. The reservoir that is slightly HIGHER than the pond on the other side of the road. As usual, there was water ( about an inch deep ) flowing across the road yesterday as I was driving to work at about 2:30 PM. And as I was driving home after midnight the water was about 3-4 inches deep. As usual, they had the signs out and I know this road so I went through it slowly and  my engine did not stall out.                        
     We have been watching the news reports and I know some peple have been hit HARD! I hope there wasn't too much damage in your basement. Can you believe this? Two weeks ago it was so dry we were having brush fires!

  I actually haven't been out that far west on more than a few occasions- I live on the coast and spend a lot of time up in the middle of nowhere Maine and NH. (can't get a lot more specific than that lest my mother somehow end up reading this)
Most of the local stores and schools are closed, but except for Route 1, the major roads are open. Towns like Peabody (which are below sea-level and next to rivers) are completely underwater.

And thanks for the concern everyone. Let's just hope that Tint's ok.

The Typhoon had changed course and it going to pass by Hong Kong on the north-east.  The weather is still pretty bad but there shouldn't be much danger to the city.
