Anyone like spears?
May 15th, 2006 at 9:23pm

Hello all,
Do any of y'all get into spears? I think authentic ancient spears are neat. I have Museum Replica's Viking Long-Spear and a huge Greek style boarding pike/spear. I have them leaning in the corners of my living room. I also shoot a longbow.
Take care,

  Hello again, Freebooter,
A while ago I purchased one of Cold Steel's Boar Spears and one of the small Assegais with the long spear length shaft. These look a bit odd as they are mass produced so the socket is partly open on one side, but they appear to be very strong. Check their web site for more info. If you shop around on the internet you may find quite a price variation. They had an interesting write-up on spears that could be downloaded as a PDF and their DVD showing their products in use is very entertaining to watch.                                  .......Dan

Hello,
Have you ever gone to "Museum Replicas Ltd"? I think it is neat. They have all sorts of swords, armor, spear heads, etc.. All their stuff is well made. Their swords are all fully hardened tempered carbon steel, not soft and sorry like a lot of the crap in say the Bud K catologs. MRL's spears are solid, tempered steel too, no open sides like that boar spear. I have seen it around too and it is indeed well made. I have read of people using it to hunt wild hogs. The Viking and Roman spears are bad arsed spears, but their Greek one is a big massive thing. Their spear butt-caps are solid well made things too. I have the Greek butt cap (I keep putting off getting the Greek spear head). Anyway, it is a well made solid thing that is pointed, about 10" long and weighs probably a pound or two. The part that goes over the end of the spear shaft is hollow naturally, but the pointed end is solid steel and deadly in itself. I blued it and it looks sharp as heck. I can't wait until I get the head that goes with it. I have yet to get the butt cap for my Viking long spear. They have two types for those. I used to have one but lost it. They are also well made.
Take care,

Indeed I do love spears!
Last summer I made a few out of stone.
I would like to have a metal one but I am trying firehardened spears sometime as well! Grin

I wonder, can you find 9th century norse spears with silver inlays?

Hey Freeloader,
I like Museum Replicas too. I have the River Thames mace, and my dad has the Towton sword and a Viking one. Those catalogues are fun to look through. I am looking at the picture of the Greek spear, and is that a ridge throught the center of the head? Really strong I bet. I also got one of those Bud K catalogues. Boy do I know what a snob I am now! Full length stainless steel blades, and many overdone fantasy swords/knives...wow.

Yep, they are ridges down both sides of the Greek spear. I went to MRL's store in Conyers, Ga. and held one. It was an awsome, heavyduty well made spear head. I am going to get me wife to order one for me for my birthday (May 24). I think I will blue the metal parts and stain the shaft dark or even black and then tie a bright red ribbon, cord, or tassel from the narrow neck of the spear head.
Take care,

So you love spears, eh? ( Sigh......Why don't I meet girls like
this?? .......well.......anyway....... ) I have ordered a couple of items
from Museum Replicas too. There are also other companies that sell
replica arms and armor. Try these:

     http://viking-shield.com/Spears.html

                           or

     www.by-the-sword.com

Some of this decoration is of course applied by modern
methods rather than by hand, but some of these pieces look good
and the prices don't look too bad. Perhaps you'll find something that
   appeals to you.
Are you planning on going hunting for game animals or for
   monsters?                                                    .......Dan

Hey Chaotic Rage,
Yep, they were nice has heck. Just a friendly and courteous as you can imagine. they had a big showroom or lobby with all sorts of displays for their weapons and clothing. Anything in the catolot they will go get it from inside and let you open it and check it out. I am going to go back one of these days.
Take care,

Has anyone tried the Samburu javelin from Cold Steel? I'm thinking about getting one and I wanted to see if anyone recommends it.

I like it because it looks a lot like the ancient soliferrum or saunion. The soliferrum or saunion was a Spanish javelin known for it's ability to pierce through shield and armor.

  Pikoro, greetings!
Although I have read about the Samburu spears made by Cold Steel, I have not actually tried one. However, I have bought several of their products and I believe your hard earned money would be well spent as I have not been disappointed by anything I've purchased made by Cold Steel.
You should probably try doing a google search for the specific product ( "Samburu spear" ) as I have found that there are many sources on the internet and the price can vary a great deal. Indeed,
I once found the same product listed for HALF price from a different supplier! It is always nice to save some money $$$ !!

Although I believe the Samburu spear is based on African designs,
I am not surprised if it resembles an old Spanish pattern, as the laws of Physics dictate design based on function.
