Religion, Politics, Sex, and other topics

We're certainly a diverse bunch here at slinging.org, but I think thats what helps make this site unique.  It seems unavoidable that certain topics get repeatedly brought up, like religion.  Ideally, I'd like the site to be all about slings.  However, this forum is also a community of people.  Off-topic posts about who we are, our history, our work, our beliefs, and more bring us closer together, and thats important too.  But, I don't want see topics being locked to end discussions because they are getting too heated.  All I ask is that everyone here be respectful of other people's opinions, and if debating something, to not ridicule it in the process.  As the site's administrator, I would feel responsible if a visitor were to read something they find offensive.  It puts me in an awkward place.

However, I've come to know many of you quite well, and I know that we are all civil and intelligent people here.  Lets keep it friendly and have fun.

Yeah Guys and Gals,

Let's help Chris out.  Private emails are better when things move to the debate mode and such.

You're doing a great job Chris. We love the site!

Dang, I don't get the chance to check in for a couple of days and I miss something fun!  Ok, from the sounds of it, something offensive.  Ah well, story of my life.

Chris, I think you're doing a bang-up job!  The site seems really well mediated.  It helps, though, that we slingers don't get very upset over much beyond yarn types and casting meathods.

I agree that this site is well moderated.  Since slings were used by (almost) all cultures, including cultures with religions markedly different from modern, mainstream western religions, it makes since to be respectful of all belief systems when on a slinging-related forum.  Thanks, Chris!

I was just going to bite my toung on this one... These three things even my closest friends and I don't discuss. Respect is important and something many over look due to diffrent reasons. "Free radicals" are dangerious IMHO, be they religious, political, sexual or exotic chemical compounds(sometimes an explosition hazard much like the other 3).... More or less I'm all for leaving the dogma at the door, tossing some rocks, building better slings and finding better ammo. More or less keeping this weapon and the skills related alive and having fun.

Chris,
Good job. I agree with you on this,I'm just not as diplomatic.

Chris, DavidT, I couldn't agree with you more.

As for dangerous "free radicals".....The Roman Empire, Hitler's Germany, and Bush's war machine certainly had and have broad definitions of, and heinous responses to, those blessed enough to have so personified bravery and outspokenness combined, as to have become their targets.  Having been a continuing recipient of more than a few of their tactics for years....I am content to let the chips fall where they may.....all in the sight of God.

Censorship of the internet is growing exponentially, laws now passed that will effectively censor free speech around the world......

Personally, I find no advantage, personal or otherwise, in expletive name calling, immature retorts, and violence or threats of violence to effect positive societal change. however it is always revealing when those who wish to silence another's views, do so.

Many a martyr in this world has been made at the hands of successive world regimes composed of a thoroughly corrupt and willingly immature elite who have no tolerance for the stinging words of truth. Free speech is anathema to their arrogant and fickle sensibilities.

The majority of the time, I try to keep my posts friendly and fun.

And at times, no matter how unpopular,  I consider it a 'friendly' act to warn others of that which I am certain will affect them in one way or another.  It's fun to be alive and able to still share meaningful information with others.  I respect my fellow man enough to tell him even those things he may hate me for saying.  That is true friendship.  Not taking the opportunity to talk about very real and tough issues with one's friends....is, in my opinion, disrespectful of the very meaning of true 'friendship' and is, unmasked, more a form of 'selfish acquaintence'.

Chris, I for one applaud your current stance on freedom of speech. And even more your civility to those whose opinions may differ from your own.  May your commitment to such honor not fade in the dark days (literally and figuratively) ahead, that this nation and the world have fashioned for themselves.

Peace,

TS
