   I can tell you that here where I am ( north-central Mass and southern New Hampshire ) racoons are very common but not often seen as they are largely nocturnal. Oddly enough, we've had up to six or seven on the front porch at 3AM on several occasions. Mother racoon and little racoons. This is what happens if you leave a garbage bag out overnight and probably explains why they seem to be more common in town than out in the woods.                                          
   A couple of times I have seen a racoon out by the side of a dirt road (and yes, there was a stream nearby) in the daytime (but this is rare) and it appeared to be acting normally. But be careful. Over the years there have been many reported cases of RABIES. We had a RABIES epidemic in the racoon population several years ago, but eventually it "burned itself out." In other words, almost all of the racoons died of RABIES.

   Well, now that you've been warned....... based on my limited experience, you could attract racoons by leaving bait (food scraps or garbage) out for them, but they most likely show up only at night.

  P.S. I've known guys who would hunt racoons with .22's but this was also done at night. I've never tried it, myself. Racoons do have a nice pelt, though.

hey ya know whats neat, i was reading that theres lots of thjoghts of why coons wash food, it said one guy found out they had a lot of saliva, but the scientest said it was just a habit, cause he gave one some bread and it diddnt dunk it in water

thats it, ive had with you and cando, ive called them coons all my life, its faster  than saying raccoons, if u were here and called me racist bad things would happen to u, i have black friends, how do u flippin get off saying that

What exactly did CanDo  even do? As far as I've read, he hasn't posted on this topic, and asking to call them raccoons, instead of coons isn't a big thing. we're a global forum, and not all of our members speak english quite so fluently as those of us who have lived in North America our whole lives and so it is important to take into account a more limited proficiency towards regional jargon when posting. I thought you might have been referring to either raccoons or african american people before I read the post, and I have lived in the States for most of my life.
