Quote:do coons eat pecans and acorns alot or seldom, oh and do all oak trees produce acorns
Hi, buger,
My understanding is that racoons will eat ANYTHING, just like the pesky squirrels I am dealing with now. People like to think of them as cute and cuddly but in fact they are essentially "eating machines."
We've had racoons on the front porch at 2 AM tearing through garbage bags to get at the grease soaked cardboard of old pizza boxes!
Damn nuisance.
As for the acorns, I do believe that all oak trees do produce acorns, but it is not quite that simple: it turns out the acorn crop can vary considerably from year to year with almost no acorns at all some years to very large quantities in other years. Thus the acorn crop is cyclical and this is a normal natural phenomenon. You can get information about the acorn crop from your local deer hunters as the whitetail deer love acorns, especially white oak acorns which they love above all other foods. Deer try to fatten up to survive through the winter and it turns out that white oak acorns are the richest energy source. .......Dan
