N. E. Syria

In today's New York Times International Section---there is a lengthy article regarding a war fought about 5,500 years ago. The site known as Tel Hamoukar---close to modern day Southern Turkey. -----" The archeologists reported finding collapsed mud-brick walls that had undergone heavy bombardment and ensuing fire. All around they collected more than 1200 oval-shaped "bullets" used with slings and some 120 larger round clay balls------If the Uruk people weren't the ones firing the sling bullets, they certainly benfited from------". Of course the article goes on from here, and a picture is included showing these larger clay balls. I guess that's a clue to use and fire clay rounders instead of casting lead or looking for small enough rock. FYI  Roll Eyes

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Very interesting stuff in the Times.
That's a really cool site Brian. Discovery magazine published a short article about finding clay glandes or as they say "bullets" in Mesopotamia, in their march 2006 issue.

How effective is clay relative to lead or rocks anyway??

Ask not what you can do for your sling... But what your sling can do to an armored knight on horseback at over 50 yards! Shocked

Why don't they make durable windows so this wouldn't happen?
Rocks and clay I think would be about the same. Clay is a bit lighter, but can be formed into the perfect shapes. Now lead is the best. Dense, so there is least air resistance but still massive. And it can be imprinted with snappy insults, thus defeating the morale of an enemy army  Smiley.

haha, the soldier fishes the lead glande out of his liver then his morale is crushed by the insult. good strategy.
