Basically, most Muslims aren't terrorists, and abhor violence. It's even written in the Koran, that if there is to be war, it is absolutely forbidden to harm women and children. War is only to be done between the soldiers.
Using fire and explosives?? Sory, that's forbidden too. Fire is a gift to man from Allah, for sustaining life, not taking it. It is one of the worst sins in Islam to use it to kill.
That being said, there have been and always will be splinter groups in religion (Christianity included) that have their own view of the world and their scriptures.
These people will generally have a negative view on all others that disagree with them. Most are non violent, and tolerate our opinions. However, when someone comes along with enough charisma, they can bring others around. Also, general dissatisfaction with life as it is can help fuel this. ( Us vs Them)
Socio-economics have a big play on how people can react to things, including religion. I'm not saying that all are like this, just some. Even Buddhist monks, who take vows of absolute non violence so strict that killing even the smallest insect is sin, have been known to rise up and kill in certain situations.
