Well he has to be around sometime or the site will probably go down  Cry  This is the only forum I go to! Where will we all veg out in front of the computer and learn lethal things if there is no slinging.org?

I am alive!

It's been a crazy summer for me.  I zipped off to Ecuador for 2 weeks in the beginning of the summer, then worked in california for 3 months, and finally scooted off to Morocco for 10 days.

I've been keeping an eye on site, but never had enough time to engage in any of the discussions.  I tried my best to keep on top of people image upload requests.

Anyway, I'm back home now, and preparing a number of updates to the site.  You'll see them trickle on over the next few days.

Good to see many of you are still active.

Best,
Chris

To answer the question at hand, the book is coming, but very slowly.  I have written a paper on the sling comparing it to other weapons, and pose some ideas about why the sling disappeared from the battlefield (by medieval times).

I know there are a few other people on the forum writing little chunks.  But overall, it's really hard to get enough momentum.  Plus, the fact that literature on the sling is rare at best discourages people from the get-go.

And this of course is also why more information should be made available. It is unfortunate that areas of study lacking in documentation often fall by the wayside of "serious" research because they perpetuate a cycle of disinterest for many. Why hasn't X been researched? Probably because there is no interest, they say. No interest, no study. No study, no further findings. No new interest generated, no further study.

Of course, sometimes it's because there just isn't (seemingly) a whole lot to study in the first place, and I think that's the issue here. What information there is on the sling appears to be constantly recycled, with little questioning of the validity of statements made concerning it. I think that the experience of those who actually use slings, then, is of invaluable use to the proving or disproving of such long-standing "truths".

Chris, the sling did not disappear in the Middle Ages. It was used until the Renaissance. What really did it in was gunpowder. The armor used to protect yourself from the gun was too much for the sling.
The last reference I have to the sling is in the 1500s,Scandinavia. Guns never really caught on there, so they kept the slings.
The 1200-1300s was an active time for battle slinging, in Europe, and the Middle east
