Where/What to sling

I live in the Twin Cities, and my backyard is pretty small. I'm thinking of going to a nearby forest, but I don't know how safe this would be (its near a highway and some houses). I've only toyed around with a sling (I broke a side-view mirror), so I don't know how far they'll "shoot". I made a couple of rubber glandes out of rubber compound, and they are bouncy, but they break things. Any tips for practicing in a city? (I can't drive, 1 year off, dang it!)

my alternative is (i begun to sling in our garden) a little pouch of plastic, filled with (if you want more weight, wet) sand.

Hacky sacks and koosh balls work.
Really what you want is something you can sling at full power, but slows dow rapidly. Whiffle balls do this well.

i like snow balls but they are a seasonal thing and dont have very good aim/range.
ice cubes work well too. (dont listen chris
but if you break something the evidence will melt)

Tennis balls w holes punched in them to take out some of the bounce. Sling them into your garage door or similar at close range & be prepared to chase the rebounding balls. I think very tough to sling anything under 2oz weight, & tennis balls just make this weight. mgreenfield

you could also try bractice wiffle golf balls wraped in duct tape, thats what i started of with liveing in a dencely populated city, and dont worrie i got into some deep sh** then i first started slinging so its nothing new to me, i understand where youre gomeing from, but nothing feels better whenyou get out there with some nice room and you got the perfect stone and you could just go balls out...

It is nice to have a lot of room to get out and hurl. Unfortunately a lot of us don't have that luxury. I suggest making a small range designed for accuracy, say 10 to fifty yards in either a back yard or basement. If outside I recommend tarps set up, like behind home plate around the target. Sure it's more fun to hurl a hundred yards plus. It is also fun to impress somebody that you can hit something with the sling most people think it can't be done. It always amazes me when people are impressed by my smashing a five gallon plastic bucket at 10 yards lol

I use this cut on a hill near my workplace to smash some rocks at short range , it's about 20 yards height and 30 yards wide and i can shot from 0 to 35 yards
surface is compacted sand/gravel, so projectiles won't rebound or ricochet, and you can reuse them
The building at the left side is my workplace.
