My apologies, Matthias.....you gave me no leave to call you familiar.

Not at all! I didn't use my full name until I got old enough to start fighting with bureaucracies, so I grew up being "Thias" and still am to familly and friends. Shucks I guess you guys must qualify.

mgreenfield - 1/3 or even lower for a projectile that is the same weight and material. If you are going from stone to lead would you believe 10-12%! The coefficient of drag is cut by 1/2 to 3/4. Then you have to take surface area into account. A 2:1 lead glans is about 1/2 the diameter of a "spherical" stone so the projected area is around 75% smaller - with an equivalent impact on drag.

Calculated ranges for the three examples given above are (60m/s,45deg):
  • Spherical rock  (100g,41.7mm diameter)  185m
  • Spherical lead (100g,25.6mm diameter)  262m
  • 2:1 Ellipsoid lead (100g,20.3mm*40.6mm)  324m

I checked with a company that makes tungsten balls.

The price is outrages!  $895 for two 1" tungsten balls!

I think tungsten powder is much cheaper.

I gusess making darts with the powder is a good alternative....... Roll Eyes

...

Ask them if they have any "damaged goods" that you could get at discount.

Also, you want an alloy, not pure tungsten.  "Heavy Metal" is what the alloy is called.  Category 4 is best.

All I have ever used is 99.99% pure tungsten, which is virtually twice the density of lead and quite a performer!

Below is a great synopsis of tungsten and it's various uses.

I chose pure tungsten for it's density and hardness......as it happens, these are the main reasons our military uses same.  Wink

Mil. Spec. T-21014 D Category 4 is the stuff I want.

Sure.....and I 'want' to try a small pellet of depleted uranium.....point is,  The specific gravity or density of the tungsten you want is .668 (measured in lbs/inches squared at room temperature).

Compare this to 99.99% pure tungsten at .697 specific gravity and you will be getting less density at a higher price.  For extreme distance exercises, you are likely to find that pure, PM processed Tungsten is more readily available and lower priced, as well as eking out a smidgeon more sustained momentum.  8)

Sounds good, but does it crack when it hits something hard?  I thought pure tungsten was brittle.

Sure, compared to numerous more suitable sling ammo choices.  I have never had Tungsten shatter and have only seen fit to use Tungsten for extreme range exercises over natural terrain and wouldn't waste my resources using Tungsten for virtually any other slinging application......lead is still the sling king in my book as the all around ammo of choice for consistent accuracy and relatively inexpensive hunting and target sport.

This is not to imply that I have not enjoyed thoroughly testing myriad other materials and configurations, each with it's own unique qualities to add to the slinging experience.  8)

Isn't tungsten a lead subsastuit. So wouldn't it be easliy to shape just like lead. I know that people use tugstan in duck shotgun loads.

Perhaps you are thinking of Bismuth, an excellent lead substitute for numerous uses.... Wink with great malleability characteristics.   Tungsten is a very hard metal with the highest thermal stability of the known metals.....it must be shaped by machine process or a PM process using a mold at very high temperatures.

Tungsten is used in some shotgun laods, but diluted by 60% or more steel. The idea is to claw back some of the performance lost to lead when that was banned. Tungsten by itself is too hard to form reasonable shot. Bismuth ends up a little lighter than the composite steel/tungsten, but is "cheaper" ($$$) and isn't as hard so is easier on barrels.

Bismuth is nice and soft, and is fun to play with around magnets! Nice lmp alloys to play with too!

Yep.....Thias....Bismuth is certainly a unique metal.  It's diamagnetic properties can be exploited in a variety of inspiring ways!  Smiley

Speaking of magnets.....

That site on "magnets" is very interesting.  Those magazines.. I'd like to have a zerox copy of the article on anti gravity.

I'd like to make my sling bullets, quartz with gold wires or course, much bettor!

LOL.......I would love to have such ammo too!  And so you've inspired my new maxim for the day...

"That which cannot be slung is not worth slinging".

Imagine one of those craft sidling up to you in your automobile and someone reaches out with a 'primitive' sling...ready for attack.

In all actuality, the experiences you read about in the article are 100% true, I assure you......My wife can attest to the veracity of the account.  She still doesn't like talking about it much but can still recount the facts rather well.

I think we should discuss further in a real-time format such as IRC.   I think we need to have slingers meeting on IRC once a month or so for live discussion?
