New (wide) grip takes a little getting used to, but may give cleaner releases because cords arent twisted around each other at time of release. When we did some slinging together, archeorob shot stop-action pics that verified this.
I had a heck of a time combining nwmanitou's overhand style with a wide grip, but finally did it.
On the other hand, a narrow grip seems to give a very slightly more "snappy" release. But I'll give up some snap for a "mini-rocket" look on launched ellipsoid ammo.
Right now, I'm getting good snap and pretty consistent spin with a toggle on the retained cord, and the cord exiting my fist between ring and bird fingers.
If ammo is falling out of the pocket when you use a wide grip, you may need to use a longer (not wider) pocket. I think the ammo tends to roll back and forth in the pocket when you use a wide grip, and the wider the grip, the more the roll.
Other than that, practice, practice, practice.
