sling contest 40 miles from home
Aug 15th, 2004 at 4:39am

I was just surfing www and found a slinging contest next September the 5th in a village 40 miles from home.

http://www.andalucia24horas.com/texto.asp?id=195738&sec=74

Sorry it's in spanish
In short it says: it's the 3rd slinging meeting at Aldea de Charilla near a city named Alcala La Real. (Jaen provence)
It's an international event and it will be  the next Sep the 5th
Starting 10 a.m.  with a slinging exhibition  and then from noon time on, the pro. slinging.
Sign up fee is 1331 reales (old currency lol) that's about 2 euros.
Here are the prizes
1st .- 80,000 reales (about 150 euros) and Rural Cash       trophy
2nd.- 40,000 reales and Vacational Home trophy
3rd.-  20,000 reales and a.d.s.g. south mountain range trophy.
4th.- pantry award (is it food?) to the best taylored shepard Grin

finally there will be a special slinging zone for kids (boys and girls) and stands of slings for sale.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately i will be travelling those dates so i'll miss it
Sad otherwise i'd like to take pics of the event anf the slings for sale.

Another contest, this time is in a village 30 miles west from home

http://servicios.ideal.es/granada/pg040718/prensa/noticias/Local_Granada/200407/...

this is held in July the 17th, and again most of the slingers are (or have been) shepards.
btw... the old shepard in the pic use a rather long sling for the standards here.

I live in Cadiz and will be able to go to the contest in Jaen.

Let me know near the time if you still can't  make it and perhaps I can pick some gear up for you.

Thanks for the info  Grin

Thanks  moss
I was interested in watch how's slingers syle and how slings are made... also interested in talking with the shepards and take some pics of the event and the slings for sale to  post them here. so all members can enjoy it. I'm happy with the slings i make and i  think the slings they make are pretty much the same as the ones i make, only they may use different materials, so i think i would'nt buy anything.
That weekend (Sep the 3rd, 4th and 5th) i'm going with  my wife to Santiago de Compostela at the north-west of Spain, we won a free wekend (plane travelling and 4 star hotel) from  car insurance company Smiley
I hope i can visit this slinging contest next year.

Great Zorrro!, I´didn´t know these two contest. There is anotherone in Istán, Malaga, about 1 September others years. So we have at least three slinging contest in Spain, apart from many Balearic competitions. It´s amazing that all these peninsular competitions are held in Andalucia  Smiley

I´ve found more sling contest in Andalucia Cheesy. In Purchena (Almería) at middle of August (don´t know the exact date). In Salares (Malaga), September. And in Cartagena, May, at Carthaginians and Romans festivals.

Maybe there are sling contest in others countries, like Italy and Greece... South America too, etc . It would be interesting to find these places.

Smiley Great, great news... ¡qué maravilla!
As I told her before, I have a lot of friends linving in Spain, some of themn also devoted to the research of traditional sports and games, like me. I will contact some of them - one lives in Aragón , and the other in Galícia, or Galiza as we should say, as the spoken  galizian language is almost the same as  portuguese - and they can give me some information. Next year I'll visit you country, maybe I will go to Baleares, do you think we could meet ourselves? it would be a pleasure to me to be with you, we can arrange some "tiro con hondas"...
I'll wait for some ohotographs and more information, if someone here go to any of these contests...
A prize for the best shepard clothing... ¡qué gracioso! Grin

Don't worry Zorrro and Matthias,

If I can make it to one or more contests I promise to try and get as much information as I can and will be sure to post it.

Alternatively I will also try and spread the word regarding this sight to anyone who will listen to my ranting.

P.S. Nice prize Zorrro, I hope you have a great time

On Saturday August 21, I will try to make some pictures of the event and I will publish them for you, they won't be of competition that Zorro comment in  this topic, they will be of the competitions that the FBTF organizes

Greetins,
Vicente

Wow, to live in a place where slinging is encouraged, rather than somewhere where people look at you like they think you will break their windows.  Just because I look like a punk doesn't mean I don't have other interests... people can be so narrowminded. Cheesy
