I use large lead fishweights as slingstones.  There is this trick that I often use to make the projectile buzz through the air.  You take a drift punch and chisel out 2 to 3 vertial notches on either side of the projectile.  And then when you cast it, the lead weight will scream like a firecracker or a low-pitched siren.
