My new sling design
Jul 6th, 2004 at 10:19am

...

This is a new sling design I just came up with.  Its leaving the planning phase.  I started cuting the line for it already.  I'm naming it after one of the creatures from the TREMORS movies and TV series.

I have a drawing of a Hawaiian sling that looks like the cords are braided the same way.

What do you think?

I started trying to make this sling.  I made a wrong calculation Sad  The working strand in making the cords eats up line like crazy.  The usual calculation for line length needed for braiding does not work, it doesn't even come close.

I found out what I had suspected, that these two braids go together perfactly
NO TRANSITION PROBLEMS WITH THIS ONE
It doesn't have to be this exact 11 strand braid it can be other ones of the same type.

The cord seems like it might be a bit thick but I'm planning on tapering them like the Hawaiian sling that I mensioned.

It is probably best to use something less slippery then nylon.

Tarred nylon... don't let your wife/gf catch you braiding near anything "nice"  Wink

Still looking forward to seeing it! (I'm patient though)

this resembles the kind of slings shepards make here in the south of  Spain  (and the same i've seen in Balear Islands) iit's very simple easy and quick to make
Last one i've done is nylon 5mm  just need 3 cords of aprox. 6 to 7 meter.
start in the middle making 3 srand braid for the finger ring.
once you 've got the apropriate size, join the 6 strings and start 3 strand braid  for the retention cord (each strand with 2 strings) once you get the desired lenght divide the strings and braid two separate 3 strands braids (each strand with 1 string) to  the lenght of the desired pouch.
Then join the 6 strings again and start to braid 3 strand braid (again 2 string per strand) to make the release cord to the desired leght.
it's desirable to free and  trim some of the string fibers at the end of the release cord, so it gets thinner like a latigo  and if you let some fibers free at the end(about 4 inches or so) it will make a crack sound like a latigo. (this is useful for shepards cause sheep doing something wrong i.e. eating some forbidden plant/tree or getting too far from the flock, only hearing the crack sound stop doing that wrong and behaves properly Shocked  )

This is my first Shrieker prototype.  I made it out of hemp.  It kind of worked out but I'm not to happy with it.  The next one will probably be made out of nylon.  You can't see the detail very much on this one.

The knife is the same as the one often seen on the TV series LOST.
