Historical ways of slinging
Apr 5th, 2004 at 2:02pm

I found this forum some time ago and have been following it with interest.  I have tried slinging on and off for quite a while  - without much success.  When my son showed an interest I became interested myself - again.

I saw it mentioned somewhere on this forum that some historical pictures show slingers at various - supposedly presently unknown - starting and ending positions.  Is it really so, has nobody tried to "recreate" these positions or if so what was the result?

Welcome TLM!

I guess Hondero know an answer of that question.

Have you tried the search-function on this site to see if the answer already is here somewhere?

Wish you and your son much slingingfun together!

Welcome!
We are getting alot of good folks from the frozen North!
Go to "Slinging Articles" and open up "Slinging Styles". That should be a big help.

I include one or two such pictures from Anglo-Saxon sources, showing a bird hunter using an underhand cast. It's used for hunting because it doesn't require much windup, which would tend to spook the game.

I've tried this cast, but I can't see using it in a warlike context.

On the other hand, a lot of what we know as slingers is passed down from friends and parents, tribal knowledge if you will...

Welcome TLM,

There are a few articles you might want to look at, but they don't really discuss historical methods (although they are likely quite similar):

http://www.slinging.org/articles.html

Here is a current discussion about trojan slingers, including a nice picture:
