To dangle or to hold ?

Most (not all) descriptions or instructions on slinging start the process from a dangling position.
I always thought that for either hunting or military purposes starting slinging from a pouch/pocket/cradle held position seems more logical (whether the pouch cups the projectile well or not).

What do you mean by "pouch held position"? You mean holding the pouch in front of you when starting the cast?

I would agree. When I'm just goofing around I usually just drop the pouch and then start swinging. If I'm hunting (which means I'm still goofing around, but with an imaginary purpose
), I usually have a stone in the pouch, and the pouch in my left hand while I stalk through the woods. When I go to throw, my release of the pouch goes straight into a throw. Generally then I have one full rotation and then a release whereas when I'm just flinging rocks into the lake I may whirl it awhile b/f letting go.
Thats me anyway...

Snapcut,
Hello there! I'm definately a holder with a few excepts.
From what I have gathered in my 6 months of using and reading about slings, I use what is called the "Greek style" For me, it seems the most controlable for accurate shots whether I'm 10 or 70 yards with stones up to slightly larger than billiard balls.
The situations that I use several rotaions starting from the dangling position are when the sling is to long to stretch between my arms to get all the slack out of the cords.OR if the stone is too heavy to get the momentum up to speed by the hand held style. Although, I do sometimes kind of throw the pouch extra hard in the direction of the swing to get it up to speed without rotating it several times. When I say "speed" I mean fast enough to get it moving so that I can have a hard snap at lelease where most of the power is generated.
I just made some detailed videos that should be posted this week that will be better than words.

Yes. Either that or over your head.
