Title: The Beginning
Post by Rat Man on Apr 2nd, 2026 at 11:23am
This was the first sling I ever made: https://www.slinging.org/42.html.  It's a simple string or Appu Sling. It's fast and easy to make and it's effective.   I mostly made my slings from boot laces in the beginning.  The beauty of it is that if you know how to do this you have the ability to make a sling quickly out of almost anything you come across.  If you want to improve it you can fill in the pouch by weaving or with  tape.  I find that medical tape works best but duct tape will also do the job.
What was the first sling you made?

Link fixed.  It's a weird thing with how the forum tries to handle certain URLs.

I don't actually remember the first sling I made.  One of the main reasons is because when I first made some slings, I tried them out and was really terrible.  So I stopped.  And I didn't pick up a sling again for almost 10 years.  Although in that first run of slings I made, this is probably the best one I did.  Braided hemp with a linen pouch stitched on.  This might be from around 2010.  Not sure.

I made my first sling out of nettles. I was interested in making fiber from plants myself and trying to weave it. I didn't have enough nettles for a whole sling, so I added a rope made of jute. .......the tail collapsed pretty quickly when throwing, and I repaired it and added synthetic threads to the tail.

I was enamored by the idea of an ultralight sling made of the least amount of cordage possible, so I searched around and found a non-bulky knot that would exit two ends on one side of the knot for the pouch, and only one end on the other side for the release cord. A tucked sheet bend was the way to go and birthed my love for slings. I eventually modified this design to have even less cordage with spliced dyneema instead of knots.

The first slinging style I used was Apache.  For the first two months that's all I did.  Don't ask me why.

A sling that is always on the belt)). Just a waist belt with rings. It is worn on the wrist through a loop in the rings. For convenience, it is better to cut where the stone lies.

My first sling was a survival paracord shepherd sling, but recently I've been getting into making my own paracord baleric slings with the split pouch, which has been a ton of fun!
