Title: (Free) Slinging Logbook App Project
Post by irgendeinekiwi on Jan 30th, 2026 at 3:06pm
Hi guys,

I've been cobbling together an app for tracking slinging sessions and comparing slings. At the moment it's browser based, eventually I'd like to get it on the app store (if I can figure out how to)

Current features:
-Session setup with sling type, range, ammo type & weight
-Tally based tracking of dianas, hits, misses etc
-Create up to 30 different sling profiles (type, cord material, length etc) and 10 private test profiles
-Session history, sortable stats
-leaderboards with various filters to see who's the best, what sling type is giving the best results etc

You can give it a test for free over at https://blackthorn.base44.app/ It works best if you use the "save to homescreen" function on your mobile browser.

Please don't hesitate to share any suggestions or feedback :) I'm also open to ideas for a proper name for the app

Hey looks great! I actually went through a process to create something like this myself using google sheets and forms, but the google forms options were too cumbersome so in the end I just have a spreadsheet where I enter the data I want using the google sheets mobile app.

This looks like it would be much better to work with ;D

I haven't had a chance to check out the app yet, but from your screenshots it looks pretty complete! I'll download it shortly and start playing with it.

A couple of things come to mind you might consider, although I certainly wouldn't say any are required:

[olist]
  • Add a weight field to the sling profile
  • Add a practice/competition option for slinging sessions so you can compare how you do at home vs in competition
  • In addition to an accuracy percent, you might consider normalizing this calculation to an average points and dianas per 5 throws(the traditional balearic round) - so for example, an average 3.55 points and 1.25 dianas.
  • Maybe an option to export everything for us data nerds that like to overanalyze everything
    [/olist]

    Done
    Added:
    - weight as optional profile field
    - D / H per 5 shot stat display
    - Abilty to flag a session as competition (on stats page), will have to intergrate its function better

Alright I got to spend a couple minutes with it just now, and it's awesome! I'll try using this for a little while and see how I like it. The leaderboard is a great idea to keep people competitive.

I also have some more feedback. Some of this may be personal to me, so don't take this as law, but anyways here it is:

    [olist]
  • Allow sessions to be backdated so that you can enter them later if you forget, but they will still be reflected correctly on the charts.
  • Track time of day if you aren't already, and allow that to be entered for a backdated session(but by default when adding a new session, populate the current date/time). I often do multiple sessions in a row and wouldn't want to have to stop to log them in between.
  • Add a list view of individual sessions with the various tracked stats, sort of like a table view.
  • Allow total numbers to be entered directly into the session input. Keep the plus/minus, it's great for small sessions. But I usually do ~100 at a time, so clicking that plus a hundred times is no fun ;D
  • Replace "Hits" with "Points". Points would include dianas(+2). I think this makes more sense to focus on rather than hits because this is how competitions are scored. Fewer individual numbers to remember when entering. I would recommend doing the same on the stats page - "points per 5" rather than "hits per 5" since that's how competitions are scored.
  • Add a "total throws" field in session input. Again, this may be personal but I only track three things - throws, points, dianas. The rest can be calculated from that if you want it.
  • That being said, I have seen some folks that keep score by misses and dianas, then tally up their actual score at the end from that. So you may want to support entry on any of the fields and then automatically do the math for all the others. Although that could lead to some complicated validation logic when submitting the session, so I'll leave that up to you whether you care enough to tackle that.
    [/olist]

    Thanks for the ideas.

It should be easy enough to change the H/D per 5 to a competition points based thing. I'll see how much of the other points I work in, particularly the counter mod and backdating. In think there are already time stamps on the sessions

Fyi the "misfire" tally stems from my idea to collect reliability data on the various slings people may use. Ideally the app would serve the double purpose of providing sort of empirical data to see if there are statistically significant differences in the effect of different pouches/lengths/sling types. Of course there are a bunch of caveats, but I think it could be interesting.

I was thinking of having the option of different target types (cinder block, pumpkin/melon etc )which wouldn't flow into the above comparison stats. Not sure how best to do that without even more options on the session setup dropdown.

What do you think about a slider in the settings tab to toggle between tally and manual score entry?

Sure, makes sense to me! For smaller sessions, the tally is probably easier so it would be good to offer both.

I've updated the app with most of those suggestions- let me know wgat you think

    Nice thanks! Yeah works great.

I also like the target selection, good addition!

Now that I'm training regularly I've been working on decluttering the app, seen as noone ended up using the additional targets etc.
The goal is to have minimal faff before one can start logging shots.

    Updated:
Target selection now Traditional(Balearic) and Other
    Challenges and info tab removed
More detail on past session list

    Coming soon:
Faster session setup that remenbers previous settings
    Clearer Stats tab
    New UI/Colour pallette
Possibly the ability to use it without signup

Hey sorry for the gap! I'll give this new version a try. I was using this pretty regularly, but made a big technique change so I didn't bother tracking stats during that time. I'm back in my normal range now so I'll start logging here again.

All good. I might add a quick way to select/note the slinging style too  ;)

    Update:
-Stats page now has a competition points projection, based on last two sessions. Now there's a small bug in the rest of the stats, but I'll fix that soon.
-App can now be used without requiring sign in (guest mode)

    👍👍👍

I don't know why I didn't see this topic earlier — great idea and productive work!

    Changes:
The UI for the session setup has been reworked
+Autofills  the setups of the last session to save having to set up from.scratch every time
+ added sling style as an optional extra to track
+bug fix on stats page, found a new bug with the sling list...

In terms of actually using the app, I've found tallying in 10 shot increments/rounds  to be a good way to track directly into the app, without interrupting the flow of the session too much. I'll add a total shots entry to the tally counters too, so the misses will autofilled like with the manual entry screen.

I dunno if this is the known bug: my sling list is populated with 23 slings I can't delete (that I didn't add). Seem to be able to add and edit my own no problem.

Could odd numbered sling lengths be added, or have manual entry for length? I swear all my slings are an odd number of inches long.

I really need to make myself a target. Not just for the app, but that may be what pushes me to actually making something.

The sling list should only have the users own sling profiles. Good point with the length though, I'll look into sortimg that out today

Hmm, was just coming back to this and fill in my gap, but it looks like starting in May the stats tab is showing all sessions rather than just mine? There are a bunch of sessions/slings in there that aren't mine, and I don't see a way to filter down to just my activity. I did verify that I'm logged in - and it's on both my phone and my desktop so I don't think it's an issue with my browser.

Damn, its like playing whack-a-mole with bugs at the moment...

So, the stats and sling list bugs should be fixed, as well as the autofill of the session setup from the last logged session

Heh, yeah I know that feeling ;D

I tried clearing cache/cookies and logging back in, but I'm still seeing a bunch of stuff that isn't mine(slings/sessions). Did you do a data migration at some point when you added new features/dimensions? Maybe the data got crossed up and is actually associated with my account now. I can clear out the stuff that isn't mine, but didn't want to do that in case it'll affect someone else as well.

Attached are a couple of session examples(that aren't mine) if that helps.

    Oh ffs >:(

I just reviewed the data and none of those slings/sessions are assigned to your user name... Must be an issue within how its choosing what is displayed. Damn clanker vibecoding haha.
Back to bug fixing tomorrow then... Sorry

All good man! Software is a slippery subject, especially now with AI on top. I'm not a developer myself, but I work in software(site reliability engineer) so I'm happy to help if you need it, just let me know.

I ended up having to completely rebuild the stats page, it works on my end now. Let me know if you find any issues

I really like this app. Any bug I've had has gotten cleared up!

Could you add an ammo type? I use Pan Sling training balls: 14.5g, 5 cm diameter.

    Sure thing!

I added it as PS Ball, it should auto select the weight
