Title: Hello from the Pan handle!
Post by Cardinal Direction on Oct 28th, 2025 at 7:24am
Good morning friends! After many years of wondering I finally picked up the sling, wish I did it years ago back when my muscles were nice and flexible.

Like many, I had the misconception that slinging was dangerous and held off but after seeing some really great instructional videos I started throwing.

Right now I have a 16inch sling and a 27 inch sling, both paracord single strands. The 27 is probably a hair too long as I have T-Rex arms and stand about 5’7” but I’m having a lot of fun figuring it out!

Golf balls are my favorite ammo and I got one of my slingshot buddys to come sling with me, we throw a soccer ball out into the field about 100 yards and see who can get closer.

Hoping to learn a lot!

Hey, welcome aboard! Glad to have you here.

It can take time to find a length you're comfortable with, and longer after that to feel comfortable with any length - within reason, that is  ;D

Don't stress about it though - skill and ability will come naturally regardless of sling length - I'm sure if you use the 27" sling a bunch you can eventually get quite acquainted with it  :). My first long-term sling was a little longer than I think it really should've been, but after a fair bit of use it started to feel like an extension of my arm, and the awkward feeling was replaced with natural form and mechanics.

But ultimately, go with whatever works best for you. And I reckon the nice thing with paracord slings is you can easily shorten them by retying the fingerloop and grip knot lower on the cords.

Did you make that sling, by the way? It looks great!

Thanks! I made a rudimentary one and the green one was actually woven by a friend of mine with some actual cord skills. Unfortunately, I have very stupid hands! Looking forward to lots of experimentation! Just got to remember to warm up or imma get myself in trouble. I noticed my picture I posted is huge, is there anyway to fix that?

To scale down the image, you can open up the original image in a photo editor and scale it down that way, and I believe you should be able to edit your post to swap images. Otherwise, one of the forum admins will scale it down for you  :)

There's some details for scaling down the image on Windows 10 and Mac here https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1676672557

And no worries - with time I'm sure you can make some gorgeous slings. It takes practice!

Also I'm sure we can all relate with the trouble of not warming up. I'm a young whippersnapper but I definitely feel it when I forget to warm up  ;D

Fixed.  Caspian linked some general instructions we have.  If you're using another device, a quick search online will usually get you to some instructions.

All good.  Posting giant photos here is basically a rite of passage. ;D

This old forum just doesn't have auto-resizing built in.

Welcome from New Jersey.  Golf balls are my favorite ammo also.
