Title: Forged steel glandes
Post by JameswoodMOT on Sep 27th, 2024 at 5:45pm
Hiya

I’m aware I’m spamming the place a bit at the moment, I hope it’s interesting enough to justify!

So, of course, the next step up from clay glandes…. steel glandes😈

I don’t much like the idea of lobbing lead around the countryside but steel is pretty harmless. Also, if you can find them, they don’t deform in the same way.

It didn’t take much for me convincing myself that this is a better use of my time than doing my work. They’re coming in around 100grams. Radius is about 45mm, diameter about 20mm.

My plan was to use them for the pumpkin challenge but then I remembered I’m still struggling to hit a tree at 30 yards so it could get time consuming 😂

I was thinking about trying to make some cast iron ones in the microwave! Maybe I will now.

If I didn't know who you are and what you've already made, that would totally be a 'WTF are you talking about?' statement.  ;D

Very impressive.  Sell them here.

Thanks all!

What sort of weight would people be after? 100 grams is as heavy as I want to throw really, for distance I will probably be making more around 50 grams.

This is such a bizarre sentence  ;D I would love to see that!

Did some more messin after work today, lashing it down outside so no slinging this eve.

I’m going to spend an hour making them and see how many I can do, then work pricing back from there.

Whoaaaa, very cool! I would certainly be interested in a handful of various weights. Definitely mostly in the sub 100g range, but maybe one or two jumbo sized ones for fun  ;D

Keep experimenting and keep sharing!  I've enjoyed watching this progress.  Have you thrown any yet?

A great piece of work. Looks very useful and functional. How do they fly? Have you tried them yet? I was given one as a gift. Made of Damascus steel.

Thanks for the kind words!

I had a couple of hours at it this afternoon, I halved the forging time by the end of it. There is the odd outlier but they are within 5 grams of one another, so under 10%. What is the kind of tolerance that would be acceptable? Of course less is less but is 5gram tolerance ok?

As to how they fly. I dunno, better than a rock but not as well as lead? It hard to quantify really, they seem straight and stable in flight. I send a few out this evening and they went out of sight against the pale sky. Because they are small and dark they were impossible to see when I sent them at the tree line.

I’ve got some glow in the dark paint that im going to paint some with and see if I can do some distance throwing at night.

Apart from visiting salt flats if anyone has an idea how to find glandes after you’ve thrown them I’d love to know!

Back in the summer up to 120 yards or so I could look for the dust cloud when they hit. Now though I have no idea apart from finding a body of water with a reference mark that I can use my range finder on.

have you worked out a price?
how much for a 10-pack or a 20-pack? including shipping

I've tried glow in the dark paint with zero success. However, drilling a hole and putting a LED arrow nock in it has had much better success. Just an FYI. If you were to do it, I would use clear packing tape to make the nock a couple of tiny fins, because the weird center of mass of a drilled gland makes it fly horribly unless it is plastic or clay.

EDIT: Just saw the latest post from James. THAT'S THE TICKET!! LED nocks also are a good option, but make sure to buy the cheap ones...they seem to work just as well.

The stabilization of those by putting on a small tail will really help, I'd imagine. I have yet to try it, so if you do, please report back!

I saw the LED nocks but they just look a bit bigger than I wanted. I don’t know if they can be trimmed down? In an ideal world what I would have is just a little LED bulb sticking out  the back for minimum interference.

It hadn’t worked occurred to me to make fins or anything. Would they increase spin decay? Until the glow stick got snapped a little they seemed to fly pretty well. My throwing was a bit off but they were pretty silent. I think I’ll do well to throw some in the daylight to see if I can see the flight stability or lack of.

I have just order some 2.2x22mm sticks, those were 4.5x37mm, to try in the 60 gram glandes. Further distances with smaller sticks might be too hard to find.
