I don't know, but here it is.  Pep sent out a message with the dates for the next World Cup.  It will be October 16 - 20.

No other details or flyer yet.  Any other info will be posted here as it comes in.

I'm sure it's way too early for anyone to confirm if they're attending or not.  I know I'm in that boat.  I want to go, but will see what the schedule and finances look like when we're closer to that date.

If anyone who hasn't been there yet is thinking about it and has questions, feel free to post them here.  We have quite a few forum members who have been to the event.

Yep.  You guys could probably give a more thorough list, because I only know last year.  But I'd say the following.

An itinerary ASAP would be great.  But I think the only critical part is where and when the World Cup events are happening.  All the "entertainment" stuff, that could be received the day before and I don't care that much.  We basically just sit on the bus and go wherever it takes us anyway.

No getting stuck watching another sling competition.  Seeing the Balearic tournament on the last day was awesome.  But we should be slinging with them, or slinging somewhere else.

Hotels should be getting figured out right now.  Get everyone in the same place for the entire trip.  And pay the bar staff extra to keep them going until midnight. :)

No trophy ceremonies until the tournament is done.  If we have to sling through lunch to be on schedule, so be it.

I think if all that stuff was good, I could handle any other inconveniences without a complaint.

I made a post about the 2022 event. 2023 was similar but the locations on the island changed a bit.

Usually we stay in the Osiris or Bellamar Hotel in San Antonio.

An update!  Pep let us know that the hotel this year will be the Hotel Ibiza Playa.  He said not to make reservations yet though because he's still working things out.  People coming in for the Slinging World Cup are supposed to get a lower rate.  But it does look like everyone will actually be in the same hotel this year, which is excellent.  Last year we were spread out over 3 or 4 hotels.  It was basically a grab whatever you can find situation.


Any status updates from anyone here?  Personally I have a lot of other financial drains hitting right now, but I think I'm going to go for it.  I think I'll regret it if I don't get out there again.  I'm probably going to start looking at flights soon.

I'm on the fence about it. If he could get us the same cost as he did in 2022, I'd be much more open to it. But honestly, it is getting the time off of work that makes it difficult.

It's a definite for me now.  I looked at some flights and found a good trip option, other than a 5+ hour layover when I get back to the States.  But with what Mersa has had to go through on his travels, I certainly won't complain.  Got everything for about $800 cheaper than last year too.

Some not so great news.  I was talking to Channing this afternoon.  He was recently in contact with one of the guys in Spain trying to find out if we would be able to take part in the Balearic competition (if it was happening at the same time again like last year).  But not only is that not going to happen.  A lot of the Spanish guys were upset with the way things went down last year.  They're not coming this year.  Anyone who's from one of the other islands (like Modesto, Luis, etc.) isn't going to be at the World Cup.

I don't know 100%, but it sounds like the only Spaniards who will be at the World Cup this year are the folks who live on Ibiza.  And only if they're not going to the Balearic comp, which will be happening that Sunday on one of the other islands.  :(

Any specific reason as to what they are upset about?

There are a couple things I'm aware of.  One was the hotel accommodations.  There weren't arrangements made with a hotel to take all of us so the slingers could be together.  It was quite the opposite and turned into kind of a free-for-all and everyone was scrambling to get a room wherever they could.

Another thing was the schedule of events.  As I mentioned, the Balearic tournament was happening at the same time.  But because of a travel delay and some other problems, many of the Spanish slingers didn't get to finish their World Cups rounds.  And the rest of us ended up slinging in the dark because it got so late.

I'm sure the rabbit hole goes much deeper than that, but those two things are probably near the top of the list.

That is pretty crappy. That people travel across the world to sling and then end up slinging on the same day but on different balearic islands. My concern is the future of the international, I don't want any splintering or bs politics. The sport is too small for that, that there's one event that brings us all together is great. I hope we can resolve that in the future.

Anyhow, FWIW, I am planning on attending and I'm sure we can all have a blast anyway!

Another Slinging World Cup is in the books.  I didn't make it out with a trophy.  :(
Our man Channing over at Practical Paracord did well though.  He won 3rd overall, and also got a 2nd place trophy for tennis balls (I think, it might have been stones).  We'll have all the results as soon as Pep sends them out.

Here's some other stuff about this years event worth mentioning (and some other related stuff):

* I think it was mentioned that the Balearic tournament was happening on the same weekend in Mallorca.  So we knew that all the top Spanish slingers were going to be there instead.  But Pep said he was going to bring the best, and holy heck did he come through!  There was a group of actual shepherds (slingers, obviously) from Malaga (city in southern Spain).  They were all amazing slingers!  Especially with stones.  It was pretty incredible to see them.  It made it very clear to see what results can come from slinging as part of your life's work.  I have some clips that will be coming, and no doubt there will be some other videos too.

* Everyone (more or less, there were a couple exceptions I think) was in the same hotel.  It made it very easy to bump into everyone at breakfast, dinner, etc.  Easy to hang out in the evenings too because everyone was at the same place.

* The schedule was held to very well this year.  We got it pretty late, I think it was sent out the day before, but it was followed.  There is only one instance I can think of where we missed it.  On Saturday we did our tennis ball rounds on a beach in Santa Eulalia.  We got there a little late and were only able to do 10 tennis balls instead of the planned 20 (which was no big deal).  Although slinging on sand take a little getting used to.

* Previous years had a total of 40 shots.  20 tennis balls and 20 stones.  This year it was doubled.  40 shots of each.  Although tennis balls ended up being 30 because of 10 that were missed on the beach.

* Apparently there were some complaints last year about people being intoxicated.  So the slinging areas were dry this year (and likely for the foreseeable future).  You could still have a beer or whatever.  But you had to go outside the slinging area.

* This was the last year for slinging tennis balls at 13 meters.  Next year it will be increased to 15 meters.  Stones will remain at 20 meters.  I think women/children will move to 13m, but not positive.  It might be 10m for tennis balls and 13m for stones.  We'll get more info on that.

* The time of next year's event might change.  At the end of the day Sunday, Pep had a meeting with some of us at the hotel.  He brought up the subject of moving the World Cup to the Spring.  Somewhere in March - May.  The reason is to avoid all the craziness at the end of the tourist season that happens in October.  I think he might want to get the date away from the Balearic tournament as well, not sure.  He also talked about having it somewhere other than Ibiza.  Basically somewhere else in Europe.  Nothing decided on that yet either.  If anyone has any input about the time of year or a potential location, you can reach out to Pep.  I can also forward any thoughts to him if preferred.

* And last, there are going to be a lot of tournaments next year.  For anyone who travels around to them, we're going to have some tough decisions.  The guys from Guam are trying to schedule a tournament, as are the guys from Austria.  The Austrian tournament could potentially end up being the World Cup.  Although take that with a grain of salt.  No decisions, it was only mentioned as a possibility in the aforementioned meeting.  Assuming those are different comps, we're also going to have the World Cup and the Balearic tournament.  Some of us were talking about trying to get into the Balearic tournament in Mallorca.  We will have a couple here in the States too.  Channing will definitely be doing the Down South tournament again, and we need to get some guys out to IronGoober's distance competition.  So a whole bunch of options.  Unfortunately too many, because speaking personally I know I'll never be able to get to them all.

I think that's it.  Maybe some more stuff if I think of something.  Other than all the above, it was a great time seeing some familiar faces and getting to know folks a little better.  And to meet some new people too.  Having a central hotel for everyone made things much easier not only for hanging out with everyone, but also getting picked up by the bus.

Great summary, Joe! Makes me wish even more I could have taken time to make it there this year. Double the number of shots in competition would have certainly made it better. Actually, most of the changes mentioned sound like it was better, especially by getting the shepherds! Man, I wish I could have seen that, I'm excited to see your footage.

Thank you for the recap! Very interested to hear about all the updates you mentioned. But dang, I was just getting the hang of 13m with tennis balls.

More competitions is always better! Not being able to make it to all of them is a good problem to have. Means the sport has outgrown any one group, which is how it needs to be to thrive.

Wish I could have made it this year myself, but alas only a couple months into my slinging career and didn't have time to plan! Channing is only a couple hours drive so I'll be sure to see you guys there next year when he hosts. And I'm always up for some desert action out west, I'll see you there IG!
