Title: “Strike a Shilling”
Post by Archaic Arms on Jan 26th, 2024 at 3:07pm
Partly inspired from this thread: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1636237960/0

The challenge:
Strike a ~1” coin off a stick at ~20m

Excellent! :thumb:

I like this one.  I think we need to get this challenge going.  We need a challenge to get us through the next couple months to the egg challenge.  I'll give it a go as weather allows.

I had my first go at this today.  No hit unfortunately.  I used tennis balls and threw a little over a 100 attempts.  I got the stick a couple times, and had a few other close ones.  It was a fun slinging activity in general.  I'll try it again the next time I have a chance.

I really like it. It's excellent for training. If its angled right, it shines brightly, and can be easily seen.
Since making room for 20m, I've struck the same coin 9 times. And as far as I'm concerned, each dent is adding value. ;D

I'm kinda cheating actually.  I have a coin sized washer that's painted orange.  So it's really easy to see.  It's one I still have from when we did the aerial coin target challenge.

9 times is crazy! :thumb:

Goodness gracious it's humbling to see such precision. Very nice shots! I'm going to need to try this at some point.

One day we may start seeing challenges like a quarter at a quarter of a kilometer ;D
Probably not, but a man can dream of such a stonethrow. And such eyesight for that matter haha.

How heavy is that stone, AA? and it seems like you're back to a long(er) sling in that video.

It's been pouring around here lately so I haven't had time to go attempt this.

I would love to see how far we can push it. When I get the chance, I'll shoot at it from 40m, but I imagine it will be quite a challenge... The further the distance, the sharper the impact angle.

I have a few sets of stones. I think those were around 160 or 170g, but I've been using 200g since. In terms of lengths, ~54cm and ~70cm are what I've been comparing.

how do you plan to make it visible to the camera from 40m?

If the coin is tipped back slightly, it's bright from the shooting line. With a zoomed in camera behind me, it should hopefully get the full trajectory.

Great shot Joe!
The stick left standing too. Extra brownie points  8-)

Excellent shot, Joe! Makes me want to try my hand at it even more, though I know I'd be mediocre.

I think I'll try my hand at it tomorrow at 25m - I can hopefully find a good batch of stones for it; most stones here are terrible, unfortunately. Would be cool to have a quarter bearing a dent on it and be able to say I hit it from a quarter of a hectometre.

Edit: I missed, and the recording was mediocre, so not worth posting. Will try again some other day as it's clouded over today, making the quarter hard to see.
