Title: Hi from WI!
Post by mulch on Sep 25th, 2023 at 6:48pm
My name is mulch. I've been slinging for a couple weeks now. I'm very interested in ancient history so i've known this was a thing for years, but i watched a video and realized all you need to do to make one is braid. I think i've made about 8 slings now, but only a few really good ones. The best one so far is actually made of string, and a few are made of paracord, and actually the rest are made of yarn that i braided very tightly. I do hair so making slings has been great to stay fresh on braiding, and I've been taking an experimental approach to my designs because I plan on making more. I speak English and mostly been focusing on Spanish lately as one of about 4 second languages, but I've dabbled in a bit of Catalan since I started slinging too. I haven't made a target yet, but in a pinch, when there's an aluminum sign on chain link, it makes a really satisfying noise when you slam a softball against it. I never said that...

This is one of those things in my life where nobody I know gets how baller it is. It's still surreal how powerful it is, even though i can tell i'm not harnessing it to its full extent. It's surreal that this used to be an extremely useful skill and now it's a curiosity, but i have been daydreaming about a time in history where i'm sending letters home like "yeah they just want me to braid reeds and make little ceramic footballs to huck at the enemy army, just like i do at home, and they think i'm too useful to put me on the front line or make me hold the pike, and then they give me all this money for wine and gambling. It's wild." I've also been daydreaming about practical applications for the slinging in the modern era, aside from hunting and distracting the units of invading armies of course.

I don't get how more people aren't obsessed with this. I'm the only slinger i know, irl or ortherwise, but i hope eventually someone i know or two will be interested to learn so we can play sling baseball or something.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

4 second languages is quite impressive.

Yeah! I've actually studied even more that I don't keep up with. All in all I've studied Latin the longest however.

100%. Definitely understand the sentiment "How don't more people know about this awesome thing?" I think my co-workers are tiring of me talking about it, lol.
