Woven from palm frond, if I remember.  The islanders in the Pacific do amazing things with palm fronds.  I lived in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and had the pleasure of visiting many of the island nations in that part of the world...

It's interesting that the retention cord is braided the entire length.  But the release cord appears to be converted to a regular twisted cord after an inch or so.  I wonder if there's a particular purpose for that.

It's interesting that the retention side was braided last.. You can see it in the braid and you can see how they made the retention loop.

Pretty incredible, one day I may have a crack at that pouch, seems like it would be crazy difficult to make though, managing the fibres going from the centre to the edges.

It's unclear to me how they managed the non-fishtail braid sections, are those flat areas braided too, just a flat braid?

It looks woven to me. My guess is that they bring strands out from the central main braid to form both the warp and weft of woven sections, the warp must rejoin the outer braid, or pass through it and go backwards to the pouch centre.

Unless you are referring to the central braid which goes into a sort of wider, repeating fishtail. This is not actually too challenging to do IIRC, but the transition could be tricky.
