What food makes a glutton out of you. Pizza is my number one to pig out on. A young friend of mine, Mark, came by to visit a couple of months ago. He has an appetite similar to mine. Within ten minutes the two of us destroyed a huge Sicilian pizza.
Ice cream is another. I will always eat too much ice cream. So what do you totally pig out on? |

I'd have to say that for me it's barbeque ribs. They taste wonderful, and are so incredibly messy (especially the really good ones that are tender and fall off the bone). I haven't really overeaten anything lately, though, but I have wished that I'd eaten slower as to enjoy it longer.

Fruit! Luckily it's healthy and not really fattening so I can overeat it without much concern.

I'm basically with Rat Man on this. Pizza is definitely one. Any kind of dessert item is another. If I have desserts in the house, I just continually go after them. To avoid it I just don't keep that kind of thing around. Maybe once a week get something as a treat.

Yes, the best bet is to not keep such things around. If I didn't keep the house free of such temptations I'd literally be seven hundred pounds. |

Turkey Hill's version of Rocky Road is my Kryptonite. I will eat a whole half gallon in one sitting. I avoid it like the plague.

Spaghetti is another food I will always eat too much of. I make such good sauce it's hard to resist.

Yeah, spaghetti is really good and very easy to eat! Especially if you use sausage instead of beef or turkey in the sauce. When you do that, it is very, very flavorful.

Crisps. If there is an open bag of em, I'll eat em all!

We call them potato chips here in the States. And yes, I don't keep them around for that very reason. No matter how big the bag I'll eat the whole thing. They're even better with California Dip which is sour cream mixed with onion soup mix. |

Yeah, that's a funny difference between British and American English.
Here, 'chips' are french fries. My favourite are potato chips with ketchup taste. Dipping regular potato chips in real ketchup is good too. I have a bag of em downstairs I bought today and fighting the urge to have some :-X |

Around Boston people put vinegar on their French Fries. I learned this from a friend in the army. The first time I watched him order fries with vinegar at a bar I thought he was nuts. It sounded bizarre but when I tried it I discovered that fries with vinegar are actually very good.

My partner is British. I learned long ago to put Malt vinegar on Fish & Chips.

I was also sceptical about chips with vinegar that when I first heard about it. But later realized that it is similar to putting ketchup on chips.

There are sea salt and vinegar flavored chips. I'd imagine they'd taste pretty similar to plain chips with vinegar on them.
ketchup on chips... I haven't tried that yet :) EDIT: Oops, I was talking about American chips. I haven't tried vinegar on fries yet, but it sounds like it would be pretty good. |

Cherries. I will eat a pound of cherries myself in one sitting. I have to force myself to stop eating them.

Blueberries disappear so fast. The bowl is full, a bit later, it's empty. And blueberries aren't that filling, so I don't quite realize that I've eaten almost a whole bowl until it is gone.

I love smoked meats, smoked pork sausage and belly are delicious. Only home made though, the stuff they put in shop-bought preserved meats is terrifying.

I love jerky, but so much of it has sodium nitrite or sodium nitrate. I stick to the few brands that don't have it.
Smoked meats are also delicious. |

I read an article a long time ago. It claimed that when refrigerators became available to the general public the incidence of stomach cancer dropped noticeably. The reason; people started eating less smoked, dried, preserved meats.
That said, smoked meats are delicious. One of my mantras is "Everything in moderation." Some smoked meats once in a while probably will do no harm. |

I eat smoked meats almost every day! Only thing in them is salt and spices, and they're smoked with natural wood. I reckon the carcinogens in preserved meats are the various chemicals they put into them (eg sodium nitrate), rather than the smoke itself.

Cancer was pretty rare until the last century - well after smoked meats were established. What does this tell us? If you ask me, it tells us that when processed food became widespread, cancer became more common. That's why I think they're mistaking what makes smoked meat dangerous - the additives.

I’m constantly fighting with being overweight myself, it got worse once I had kids and getting out and about became difficult with work and everything else.
For me, it’s either anything BBQ or pies ! Easy to get, comparatively cheap and some of them are so damn good. I swear I could eat 4 of the damn things in one go! |

Yes, processed foods are bad for our health in many ways. That's why I don't eat any. And the additives they put in smoked meat definitely makes it more dangerous. My statement refers to the time before smoked meats were mass produced with additives. Do a little more research. The link between smoked meat and stomach cancer is a reality. I personally don't care what anyone eats. If someone wants to eat smoked meat six times a day or eat at McDonald's every day of their life I'm fine with it. And eating something not completely healthy once in a while will probably do you no harm. But if I know of a risk that you don't and I don't tell you about it then I am negligent. |

Fair enough, I appreciate it. Thing is, I know all these researchers have hidden agendas and all that. You get rid of smoked meats, and people become far less self-sufficient because they're scared to preserve their own food. So I'm reluctant to believe anything any scientist or researcher says about food - especially traditional food. |

Im a little skeptical of the anti meat sentiment these days. Many people have adopted the carnivore diet and said its healed all sorts of autoimmune conditions. For myself I had to go on a very strict diet of very low grain and no dairy to control my autoimmune issues. After my experience I could see how there may be something to it.
But yeah the smoked meats... I could see that increasing the risk just because we know smoke increases risks of cancer across the board. The rate of cancer in firefighters is really high so there must be something to it. |

Two things I've said many times before... everything in moderation. And you can tell what a creature is supposed to eat by looking at his teeth. We are Onmivores. We are meant to eat meat and plants. Leaning too heavily to one side or the other compromises health. A good balance is what's needed. That's my opinion anyway. And I hope smoked meats are around forever. There is something very primal and wonderful about smoke on meat. It's deep in our DNA.
