There was ligament tears, bone fragmentation and bone depression while using 1 oz 3/4 inch steel balls (light ammo)

Remarkable, doesn't surprise me though. Often when I hit a tree with a rock it leaves a significant dent. Once I even hit a concrete slab and it left a dent. Slings are very powerful no doubt

Not a surprise.  In one of my past impact tests I strapped a bone to a piece of 1/2 plywood.  There was also a number of layers of linen and leather protecting the bone.  A hit from a 172 g stone broke it.
