Title: What descriptive names could be popularized to describe slingers?
Post by David Beatty on Oct 6th, 2022 at 9:08am
As I casually look around articles about slinging and people who practise slinging; except for the Balearic heritage and competitions, video made available by practitioners and people contributing to this web site, I don't see a slinging cultural presence. I am thinking of poetry, songs, colourful names.

To begin, sports and militaries have a wide variety of slang references to teams, player positions, activities, operational units  eceterra.

Is this a conversation anyone wants?

Cheers,
David

Stoners!  No...that's something else.

Rockers!  No...that's a chair with weird legs or a distorted guitar music fan.

Sorry, bad jokes.  I like the idea.  I think the problem is exactly what you mentioned about slinging not being generally known.  For most people if you say "slinger", they're not going to know what you're talking about.  They may get it after a few moments to think about it (or a short explanation), but I would say it doesn't fall under common knowledge.

As I said, I like the idea.  But I don't know if nicknames or slang terms would really help when the thing being referenced still needs to be explained when its actual name is being used.

What culture ? Prehistoric weapon, sheperd's tool, modern video for fun, and for what part of the world ?

I don't have the answer but your idea is good.

To maybe illustrate Joes point a bit years ago I was asked by a new friend at work what I like to do for fun and I said I sling rocks. He thought I was joking because, apparently, slinging rock is a term for selling crack lol.

So anyways...we have some promotion to do. Slang and culture will come as an inevitable result of a growing slinging population and presence on social media. It's a great idea and needed but I think we need a bigger presence for that to really happen.

I generally have to make it clear that I said :slinger' and NOT ' swinger'.

This is usually done by whipping the sling out of my back pocket and mentioning David and goliath.

It's the single slinging reference in modern culture.

You'd need to go to Tibet or rural Mexico to find slang terms, as slings are still daily use tools in both places.

There seems to be a lot of this with slinging.  I remember a while back one of my YT videos got (incorrectly) age restricted.  Someone mentioned it may have been the title, which included 'slinging ice'.  I was told that slinging ice can be a slang term for doing meth.  :-?

Ha ha ha. All good replies. Thanks guys.
Anything I can think of has been used somewhere else.

Cheers,
David

I reckon there should be a German compound noun that should fit the brief.

German is one of the best languages for one word descriptions, that are actually full descriptive phrases in most other languages.

There's got to be a word that means: 'he who teaches rocks to fly'
I'm going to go with: Steinfliegendlehrer
I apologise in advance for any upset my pigeon German may cause.

But I have to say: SteinFliegendLehrer
Sounds really good.
Definitely an improvement on 'schleuderer' - the actual word for a slinger.
Although, apparently it can also mean someone who indulges in self pleasure.
Unless that's a conversation I'm entirely misremembering :-)
In which case I blame Uwe ;-)
