Title: Tahitian slinging style.
Post by Foresight17 on Aug 19th, 2022 at 9:21am
My slinging style is from some of the inhabitants of the oceania islands. It's tahitian in nature, atleast according to the book
Slings and Slingstones: The Forgotten Weapons of Oceania and the Americas.

Here's a link.

interesting, almost tibetan.

The behind the back starts are mainly for use with longer slings.
With a sling as short as yours, you'd probably be better off with a more conventional wind up.

I think Curious Aardvark is right. Because all the Tahitian slings I've seen on this site are 2 meters long.

But your throw is nice and clean. Your throwing style seems suitable for a powerfull short-range shot. Good.

:)

I was reading that it was common for tahitians to use 1.5 to 2 meter slings, I will need to give it a shot!

Would u say longer slings generally give higher speeds for the same weight proje tiles? Say, 70 gram stone going 40 m/s out of a sling from chest to fingers, goes to 45 m/s out of a sling from opposite shoulder to fingers?
If so, is there a point where it stops increasing and becomes too large?

Cool.  Kind of reminds me of Greek in a way.

Yes I agree. It came more naturally to me because greek style was what I started using when I first started slinging.

I've found that there is certainly a practical limit to how long a sling should be. My fastest throws are with ~1m long slings. Longer doesn't buy me much in terms of speed, but it does make throwing heavier projectiles the same speed easier.

I think the longest sling that is practical for a particular person will largely depend on their individual mechanics. At least when considering max velocity.

For distance potential, longer slings slinging a heavier projectile the same speed as a lighter projectile from a shorter sling has the advantage of a higher ballistic coefficient, or something that is less easily slowed by drag. As Dawesome pointed out to me earlier, a bowling ball starting out at 60 m/s will go much further than a 50g rock starting at 60 m/s.
