Title: greetings from the foothills of Northern California
Post by jezra on Jan 17th, 2022 at 5:18pm
Hello, my name is Jezra and my journey to slinging started with a trebuchet, then a staff sling, and finally a sling to keep the puppers running.  Once I tan some leather, I hope to make a sling specifically for throwing golf balls.

If you want I could send you some bark-tanned deer hide. I just finished a hide. If you're interested direct message me your address. (I'm in the east bay area in CA, so shipping should be cheap!)

Thanks, it is a very tempting offer. However, I will be utilizing locally sourced sheep hide (I raise sheep) for my next sling. At the moment, some pelt parts are soaking in mixture of hardwood ash to help slip the hairs before tanning. It should give me plenty of time to research sling designs.

Howdy from South Texas!

The boat sling is a good design to start with for ball throwing.  I modify mine to use a deep pouch on the retention side and a flat pouch on the release side for faster, cleaner ball releases.

Sounds good. There are plenty of woven designs that you can try in the meantime.

I'm curious how long it will take with wood ash. I just use lime and it takes 1-2 weeks. I used a machete for scraping the hides/hair removal for the first few hides I did, but for this one I bought a fleshing tool and I'm glad I did; it made things much easier.

I don't normally remove the fur/wool from the pelts unless I have a project that requires it. The last time, I used lye and it worked well, but I left the pelts in for too long.  This time, I am experimenting with skin from the legs, where wool doesn't grow.
