Title: Hello from California
Post by Happydrow on Sep 8th, 2021 at 9:56am
Hi Everyone,

Great to be here. One of my hobbies is whip making (got too many) and I stumbled onto slings. I’m fascinated with the braiding/slinging. So far based on the excellent instructions here I’ve made multiple test duct-tape slings and converted the ones I liked over to leather. Next up will be some braided slings.

Howdy from South Texas!

I made a couple of paracord whips, and the lessons I learned made me a better slingmaker… but I’m still a pretty lousy whip maker :)

Please post lots of photos as you experiment with sling designs.

So, there's a sling called a 'whip sling' an old member made some years back:

Will trade glande moulds :-)

Hmm.  CA you really got me curious now. That whip sling looks just like the form I use on my signal whips. It looks like a Balearic core with tapered plaiting on the outside.  I'm going to give this a try.

Debating though if I should change the design and plait up to the split pouch, stop and start an individual plait for each split. Stop again and continue the rest of the sling/whip.

That or I can run a continuous plait down the entire sling including the pouch to the release.

I'll work on a prototype in the next coming weeks. If I like what becomes of it I'll post pictures. If I really like what I see and how it works, I'll send you a message CA for what 2 colors you like ;)

This ain't slinging but here is a demo of my Boy using two of my custom 8ft snake-whips.

The sling won't be that long of course but I'd be modifying it to my micro-whips which are 5ft long. Equivalent to a 30" sling from pouch.

Ok so here we go. This is my first ever braided sling. I'm messing with 2 design concepts right now for a sling whip.

Design 1 is 95% complete I have not attached a cracker or a fall yet to this thing yet, I just was eager to test it out first.

All I did was braid a Balearic and to each strand incorporate a few lines of "lead core fishing line." As you can see this is a very rapid way of making a sling whip.

It slings fine but I do have a concern. I actually managed to shallow scrape/cut my self across the right of my neck to shoulder during the follow through. If I attach a Fall and Cracker it has me a bit worried something moving at the speed of sound would slice bad.  I've made bullwhips with kevlar falls and crackers that can cut through soda cans with ease. Suggestions? I was slinging Balearic form. Maybe a slinging technique that doesn't have such a follow through?

Ok so here is the start of V2 with my analysis of Matthias design that CA pointed me too. It's a different approach from my V1 incorporated weight.

On my bullwhips I use a steel BB core that is not practical for slings. On a sling I realized you don't need to braid the lead weight fishing line into a core. Just make your finger loop. Then cut multiple strands of the lead line. Measure your length to your pouch. Partition and split the individual lines. Mark all points and tape together (I use hockey tape). And voila you have a complete core. The rest will be plaiting said core to the desired thickness and design. 30% faster to make and just as strong.

Don't have time this week but will begin plaiting the core next week and update you guys then.
