Title: Hello Hello my name is mo
Post by MMF on Sep 3rd, 2021 at 11:57pm
Just got into slinging after I saw a video on YouTube. Then I discovered this awesome website and have been surfing the forum for the last week. I attached a pic of a Rockman sling I made (I hope it shows up). This sling works very well. I was able to get 160 meters with it a few times.

Welcome from New Jersey. Nice work.  A Rockman is a very versatile sling.

It is my second sling. I made a @mersa sling two days earlier. It works pretty well but I like this one more. Any criticism is much appreciated.

Sorry about that. I will need to figure that out. Thanks @Rat Man for the assist.

Also, I'm from the USA. Grew up in Texas but I haven't been there in several years. I've moved a lot, currently in Colorado, will be in Utah in a week and will probably move again soon after.

I subscribe to the guy who posted that video. Didn't know slings were a thing until he posted that vid.  Now I have a new hobby.

The string poking out is a result of me tapering the release cord. If there is a better way to do it, I'd love to hear. The braid leaves the pouch with 6 strings which I doubled up to do a three strand braid. Then I drop a string every couple inches. I wanted to give the strings enough slack to prevent pulling on the braid. If that doesn't make sense, I will try to explain differently.

I really want to learn some more braiding techniques so I can make fancy slings like some I see in the pictures section. Reply #5289 from @Teg is my favorite. http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1172017416/5289#5289
If I could do that, I would cherish it like a heirloom.

If your braid is tight enough, you can just cut the strands

Yeah that's what I thought.

And yes teg is one of the best sling braiders in the world.
Not a bad role model :thumb:

Who is the best ?

No single 'the best'.

And you'd need to qualify.

There are sling braiders in Spain and the Balearics who have been making and selling braided slings for 50 years plus.
But they pretty much have just perfected 1 or 2 different sling styles.

Then you've got the artists like: teg, uwe and Jaegoor who make a wide variety of braided slings, including intricately patterned 16 and more, stranded slings that while fully functional can also be hung on the wall as works if art.

Teg  also reverse engineers historical slings for museums and the like.

For my money, uwe is probably the best specialist artistic sling braider I've ever seen.
And for a while, he was Also the world's only full time professional slinger.
Which was pretty damn cool.

On Facebook look up Hubert slings.

But with so many variables to be taken into account, all you can do is to say 'among the best in the world.'
'all' lol

I will try out a tighter braid on the next sling. Thanks for the input, MikeG.

I didn't see much of Jaegoor yet and havent heard of uwe. I will do some research on here later. Right now, I'm working on an Egyptian sling.

egyptian slings are a bit to time consuming for me, but they are great if you want to do something that you can be proud of (until you made 15 of them and it becomes boring)

Greetings Mo,
Welcome and why not try a seat belt sling.
Easy, and adaptable.

Cheers

I'm definitely going to try a seatbelt sling when I get my hands on a seatbelt that I don't need.

Here is the "Egyptian" sling I was talking about before: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1576446462/30#34
Design decisions were made while making it...it doesn't resemble an Egyptian sling at all.

Thanks for all the greeting btw!

Ive found the best seatbelt comes from kids carseats... I collect in when I see them being chucked out on the side of the road... or if I'm in a pinch I cut em off my own kids and tell them to wear a helmet (jk) Its 1.5" wide and perfect, very flexible and extremely durable...

If you go to a junkyard with a good knife, you can usually get seatbelts for free.
