Title: Finish one errand… create three new projects
Post by NooneOfConsequence on Jul 15th, 2021 at 5:27pm
Well, the trees we’re getting too close to the roof, so I trimmed them back…

Now I have a walking stick, a club, and a slingshot to build. All live oak.

… as if I need more projects 🙄

I guess I just can’t help myself :)

Very frustrating.  Every time a piece of wood is picked up, it's always "This would make a great..."  ;D

Lol nice collection.

My dad's the same, he's incapable of walking past a bit of wood that would make a thumb stick.

We've usually got a half dozen or so hanging out in the porch.

The tallest one is a hoopak David made some years back when we went to the fauld crater with sling Badger

The rest are my dad's current thumbstick collection:-)

Theres a type of club I read about years ago that supposedly the Native Americans would use. They would find a young sapling of a hardwood, fast growing tree and essentially tie it in a knot. The tiny sapling would continue growing and the wood would form a solid club head. Then it would be cut off and ready for use.

Osage would be a great wood to try this with. Its fast growing and very dense. I would not want to get hit by a solid piece of Osage... A burl would also be interesting to try.

The root bulb is made of very hard wood and has an usable shape to make the side hitting.
My example is made with holly.

I would want a nice club. Something like a shillelagh (What's amazing is that I spelled that right FIRST TIME, no Googling or anything. A miracle!)

I went through a phase of turning clubs some years back.
Vaguely remember sending one off to somewhere exotic in an exchange of some kind.
That was a short, easily concealed club.

Turns out I sent one to tint and one to someone else.
Don't appear to be any pictorial records of either on the forum.

I do remember that one of them was going to be used to fend off packs of wild dogs on the person's route to work.
And needed to be easily concealable.
Vague feeling the person was in Singapore.
Do you get packs of wild dogs in Hong Kong ?

We're probably going back to 2005 or 6, maybe earlier.

I'll have to go through the photo archives on the forum backups.
The pictures must have been part of what we lost on the forum upgrade

Update… the forks are not totally finished, but I did some basic function testing today. Mountain laurel seeds make great slingshot ammo.

My father when he was child, hunted the birds in the courtyard of the house with a slingshot.

Progress on the long stick now too. It needs more sanding and finishing, but the majority of the shaping is done.

Theres some legit stuff on this thread. That walking stick is cool as hell NOOC. Tomb, that club is sweet my man. What holly is that? Is it stained that color? I would love a short Osage club with a root bulb head.

You could try shaping the top like a ram head, it already gets quite the look, with the horns and all !

Sorry Morphy, I didn't see your post.
The holly doesn't return vibrations to the arm during a shock. This protects the arm joints.
The colour is obtained with a tinting wax. I like the result.
