I’m proposing a new challenge.

How many soda/beer cans can you hit in 1 minute?.

Basically here’s the rules I’m going with.

1 minute. This cannot be cut from an existing round.
It must be the start of the attempt. For example you say go, or show a timer. Or walk from your camera. Have a second person with a stopwatch.

All of the cans should be same size/type or close enough.
Soup cans , beer cans , Soda cans ect.

The target cans should all be level (on a wall or on the ground.)
The target cans should be no closer than 1 can width apart and evenly spaced. There is no limit on distance apart.
The target cans should be placed in a line.
The target cans should be placed square to the shooter with the target cans inline with the shooters position.
There is no limit on cans used.
There is no restriction on ammo other than it should be not visibly larger than a tennis ball.
Shots should be taken no closer than 10m. There is no reward for distance but any distance further than 10m can be used.

You score 1 point for hitting one can
You score 1 point for hit multiple cans.
You score 1 point for hitting one can and it interfering with another can.
All cans used in scoring are no longer valid.
Basically you can only score 1 can per throw.

Throws thrown before the time ends but impacts hit after time ends are not scored.

What kind of predictions do we have? Does anyone think they can do 5 indvidual hits in a minute?

Very honestly, I will have a hard time drinking 5 cans of beer in 1 minute.

    I like the idea but you should refine the rules to omit shotgun type ammo.  I could use my double barrel sling loaded with ball bearings under the current rules. 

That’s ok because 1 throw can only produce one point. Multiple cans count as 1. Reloading might suck after the first point

Ah, glad that clarification came up.  I was thinking multiple points could be had on a single throw.  Like if you hit a can, that would be one.  And if it was knocked into another can, that would be a second point for the same throw.  It definitely makes more sense to limit it to a max of one point per throw.

I like it.  Sounds like a good training tool for reloading speed.  I've got just the thing to make a nice setup for this.  I'll just have to get one more thing.  This will also be a good incentive to finally get some reusable ammo put together.  I got my bag of balloons to make a bunch of rusty balls.  Just haven't done it yet.  I think I would go through ice a little too fast in practicing for this.

Well shoot NOOC looks like you get "the" trophy. If no one else takes part. Im still working on getting my range set up but once I do ill be taking part in this regardless of whether the challenge is still going on or not.

Awesome!  Although I think you need to do it again.  I think if you would have put the can directly in line with the bullseye (or diana, whatever) of the target, you would have had more hits.

I couldn't drink 5 beers in one minute so, I took small bottles of water (1/2 liter).
At 10 meters, five throws and one hit.
The stone fell 1 or 2 cm next to it but the bottle fell.

It's possible with beer kegs but your accuracy will be worse.

Participate without hesitation. Probably, we will all make 0 or 1 point. Whoever makes at least 2 points will be a real idol on this forum.

I tried again today and was literally inches away from a score of 2...  the hits were 21 seconds apart not counting the pause to set the can back up after the first one... and that was followed by a bunch of misses :)

Just to be clear I hit 21 cans in a minute but im not posting because my camera stops working everytime I try and send it to my laptop. Also hit over 700ms with a tungsten sphere by accident.  Hate when that happens. Just take my word on it guys and keep at it!!

i've got a bunch of cans gathered up (been eating canned fruit like crazy) and a set of rusty balls ready to go.  I'll be getting to this challenge very soon.  Hoping for the best, but I have to say I'll be excited if I get 2.

Yes!  There’s no other time in all of history where anything like this was possible. I’m really glad to see I’m back to mere participation status with only two hits. If the rain let’s up for a few more days I may try again this week. This is quite the challenge!

That was such a pain.  I don't remember when, but at some point I moved the bench I was using a little farther away from the backstop.  That helped a lot, but didn't clear up the problem entirely.

And agreed.  A great challenge!  I can imagine this one sticking around for a while, to see how high we can get that count.

Net is ordered and ideally should have a sling range in the old backyard up and ready to be abused a month after it arrives depending on how busy, broke and/or lazy I am.

I would very much like to get on the scoreboard. NOOC sent me a sling I havent been able to use as much as I would like due to my current ammo. Once that range is up though....its Aysemtrical Sling Warfare and those cans...well those cans are going DOWN.

(More likely I will fail miserably but damnit im going to die trying!!!) So please, everyone refrain from getting 4 so I have a small chance or accomplishing something this decade.

Staff sling! It's amazing how often "staff sling" is the answer...

Well if you used 400 - 500g stones, I reckon it would be doable.
Unfortunately I only currently actually own half an oil drum.
We've just taken another chunk out to make a new charcoal 'basket' for my BBQ.

They last about 5 years. Which isn't bad.

Thanks guys!  As with many a slinging video, all the not-so-great stuff was cut out.  The long sling (the sling I used is my 52" that I've done a lot of two-handed throwing with) definitely needs adjustment when you first start using it.  I probably had at least half a dozen throws way off to the left before I started to get used to it.  Thinking back on it, a 52 inch sling for a target at 10 meters sounds like a pretty crazy concept in general.

There were many more attempts with the timer that I didn't include.  I found I could get three chances at the barrel in a minute without wearing myself out too much.  And I did get to a point when I was getting one hit pretty regularly.  It was just getting the second one that was tough.  Especially when it got to throw number three because I started getting out of breath.

Sort of.  What I've found with it in my big stone slinging is that it feels a little more controlled because the stone can be moving at the same speed as a shorter sling without having to rotate the sling as fast.  So therein lies the trade off.  The sling doesn't need to be rotated as fast to get the stone moving quickly, but then the stone is further away from your eye-line to the target, so aiming is more difficult.  It definitely has a "shoot from the hip" feel to it.

Now those are some heavy impacts! I guess I'm going to have to do it now... I've just moved so I still haven't decided on my new slinging spot. but I'm now thinking if we're starting to diverge from normal cans and normal ammo... I might have to go out with the staff sling...

I think it could definitely do it.  The projectile just needs to be hefty enough.  One other thing I was running into is the hit really needs to be in the top 1/3 of the barrel.
It looks like a big target, until you get some hits on the bottom and it doesn't knock it over.  >:(


@Mersa - I actually did try two-handed slinging with this.  I gave up pretty quickly though because it was too hard to be accurate at such a close range.  I'm sure it would have worked if I stuck with it, but I was already getting close with a one handed throw.  Using the second hand to get the sling in motion was definitely a help though.

So according to gogle earth the widest bit of garden i could sling across - assuming I get a net. Would be 9 metres. It's 8.6 metres from where I'm standing just short of next doors fence to the wheelie bin.

I'm gonna go out on alimb and say only joe qualifies for the 10 metre distance and as such is the current leader :thumb:

You can see my head next to the edge of the roof of my shed. Ive checked it with google earth and measuring stick. Its 10m.  ;)  im far too lazy to prove anything to anyone though. Or I just dont care enough.  :)

Thanks CA.  I appreciate the digital pat on the back.  Although I don't think anyone here would intentionally misrepresent their distance.  All the different layouts do make it hard to judge just from the video.

I just got back in from another attempt at this.  The record is still at 3.  I got another 3, and a few 2s.  Overall it felt like a bad round though.  The 3 was pretty much accidental, and the last hit might have been a second or two late.  But through the whole thing I was all over the place.  Had way too many throws to the left.

I like this challenge because it seems like it should be far easier than it actually is. 3 is great. Really. But damn it feels like that should be more an average than a high score. Or is that just me?  ;D ive come up short so far. I need to do better.

Not at all man.  No offense taken what-so-ever, and I completely agree.  We have some great slingers on the forum who haven't done this (or at least haven't told anyone).  I think if there were more folks doing this, we might be seeing some higher scores.

I'm going to try to work this into a weekly routine.  Getting everything set up is a pain, but it's a fun challenge.  And as we've seen, more difficult that it seems it should be.

Got out for this again.  I actually fell off a little bit.  Didn't get better than a 2.  Although I got that score a few times.

I don't recall it happening in my previous sessions, but something happened that was very frustrating.  Twice I got a really nice hit on the first throw.  And then nothing after that for the full minute.

I like this challenge as a way to keep slinging.  I was out twice today.  This morning I was doing target slinging for the accuracy calculation in the other thread.  Nothing new there though.  I didn't review the video yet, but I know I was only 50% at best (probably a little under).  And this evening was the 1 minute can challenge.  No great feats of slinging, but a good day nonetheless.

Awesome Joe. I need to revisit this one too. I was having a blast slinging one of Morphy's foam-rubber baseballs at a wall today. It would be fun to go back to small targets. (I was for the first time ever 100% accurate today, lol)

That's great Joe! How do you find the plastic balearic? I've personally become a fan of them. 

I gave the challenge a stab the other day with plastic tubs (about the size of a can) and 2 was the best I got with stones. The tubs were spaced out quite a bit, which is great if you suffer from low blood pressure, but not much else. The notion of hitting targets when you "miss" has become all the more tempting...

Assuming a shot every 4 seconds on cans that would give 15 shots in a minute.

At 10 meters with 4 hits out of 15 that gives an ADI score of 28.1. That might explain why this is so difficult.  ;)

I tend to think the cans should be spread out a good distance. The initial hit on cans that are grouped closely gives an advantage making at least the first hit probably a lower ADI than if one was just aiming at one can sized target the whole time.

Either way its ridiculously hard. Might be something to consider though in future challenges.

I can't really say yet.  A quick response without any thought is yes, I do like it.  But my experience is still incredibly small.  The plastic balearic I have I bought from Luis a while back because I thought the black and pink was pretty.  I tried it a couple times, but as with slings of this type, they just don't work great with ice balls (only speaking of my own experience).  But with this 1 minute challenge I've switched over to rusty balls.  Which means all these shorter stiffer slings I have are now working great with the ammunition.

I have to disagree with you Morphy.  Here's why.  I think the unpredictable and chaotic aspects of this challenge are what make it so much fun.  If we want to see how many times a specific target can be hit in a minute, we can do that.  Just set up a target that won't be knocked over, and hit it over and over.  No need for a can lineup.

But with the cans set up in a line, it's no longer just about hitting a particular target.  You might hit another one accidentally.  You might bump a can into another one.  I've had projectiles bounce off the back stop and come back to take out a can.  I remember your video hitting the bench and knocking everything over (I've done this too  ;D).  I don't know if it's what Mersa intended, but I think the "carnival game" feel of this challenge is a big part of it.  Although I do agree with you that a slinging score can't really be derived with the added variables.

@Joe AH! Well, looks like I'm going to have to change my tune then. I was trying to go in order from one side to the other, but you're saying just start in the middle!!  I like it. I'm going to try again in that case.

Don't get me wrong.  When I release that sling, there's always a particular can in mind.  It's just not always the one that gets hit.  ;)

I should probably clarify Im not advocating changing it. This has been one of my favorite challenges along with the max accuracy thread.

Also, while theoretically having them grouped might mean the initial hit is easier from what Ive seen its so damn hard anyways it almost doesnt matter.

All the posts on this thread getting multiple hits on cans, to me at least, are impressive.

But what it makes me wonder is are the old historical stories that exaggerated? I mean we are struggling to hit 4 cans at short distances. I think its Mersa thats leading the way right? Hes put out some damn good stuff over the last 6-8 months.

But even so how do we reconcile accounts of hitting peoples head, no a chosen part of the head, at long distances?

More and more Im questioning virtually all those accounts. Either that or we are missing something really big and frankly I just cant believe the answer is "more practice".

The thing with this challenge is that the rules make the game.
Because you can only score max 1 point per throw.
Ammo is restricted, so you can’t throw beachballs , tennis ball diameter or smaller. Distance has a minimum but no maximum and cans should be level.

Everyone can try to “cheat” better numbers but honestly when you go out and try you realise it’s alot harder than you think.

Time pressure makes it hard , because it’s not a continuous clip where you get into a groove.

You start with all cans up so at best you get a few free misses if you wanted to dirty edit it but after that it’s pure skill. Sure you could put infinite cans level in a line and just wing it
but still that means your super consistent on one plane.

It’s a hard challenge and I actually agree with joe that a single static can fixed that didn’t move might actually be easier, and would also allow for much dirtier editing in regards to the 1 minute clip.

So far I think everyone has done great in that regard, very honest clips.

I’ve been saving cans to retry this but I’m out of practice and have been cheating on my sling with my bow lately.

I agree 100% on having enough ammunition that you don't need to chase it down.  I've been using rusty balls and keep them in a bucket.  I think I usually throw 12-14 in a minute.  Depends how clean reloading is.  But yeah, that break in your rhythm to stop a rolling ball is an unneeded disruption.

And +1 for Morphy to be the first to 4.  :D

Nooc your tennis ball sling is a major component.
It’s very rare I change slings and I used yours for most of the session.  CA’s is also great.

im not sure.
It would be cool if it was, i can only sling at that range in my house and did that 2 hours every day for a long time (i practise with coins)
just to let you know, i didnt count the time i spend looking for my ammo, because i only had one tennisball. i just put it  next to my feet and started the timer again

Get it on film and put it up on max accuracy. All you need there is the film unedited. 20 shots and distances and target size.
No minute restriction.

please dont think that i can consistently get those results.
21 was the best result i ever got and it was a lot of luck.
i wouldnt say i can get any record if i only rely on luck.
on that day, i have shot for 4 hours and because i didnt use a good technique, i have pain in my shoulder and wont be able to sling like that for the next few days.
even if the pain is gone, i dont want to try this again, because i want to work on a perfect technique

maybe ill try again if my technique is better, but until i can show any proof, you should not think that i actually did that (feels like cheating to me). nobody should think that this was any record, i dont want you to think that that was real until i can show you the proof.

Yes!  At this point I think we're just waiting for someone to take the lead and creates a thread.  Pumpkins should start showing up for sale before too long.  And there's a solution.  First slinger to see a pumpkin for sale has to create the Pumpkin Challenge topic.  ;)

Yeah obviously the last can is fully aimed but when there’s more cans sometimes you hit the wrong one , those clips I can’t remember maybe 1 from 3 was lucky.

But that doesn’t matter now

@Mersa - You should add a tally to the first post of this topic.  Just a list of the folks who have submitted an attempt, and the score achieved.  It will be easy to find there and everyone can quickly see how we're doing.

Ok guys I got it
5 is really hard , I average around 10-12 shots a minute without just throwing for speed reloading.
So 5 Cans is almost a 50% hit ratio.
Took a total of 4 practice sessions all around a hour and a half long.
Got to 4 cans on first session but only got the one 5/5 cans . I stopped after this , I gotta start getting back into rocks and practice for my pumpkin challenge.

Also this was CAs  tennis ball sling , and tennis balls.

Gonna leave this challenge alone for a little bit now and try work on a few other slinging ideas I got.

Yes he did .
He might be slightly a little too compact with the spread and maybe a slight advantage using bottles not cans but seeing as I was the current record holder I think I can officially say this counts as 6 Cans .

I think it qualifies. But it’s on the limits, I don’t wanna see 2liter bottles or anything as such .
Tennis balls are  ammo size limits and can size is preferred.

Doesnt bother me. I can say for contributions  I would am using just cans or can sized targets but Im also not going to lose any sleep if someone posts their own thing.

I think 3 was my highest too.  No more attempts for me though until winter goes away.

I’ve been trying to tighten up my groups both horizontally and vertically.  It would be better for this comp to focus only on vertical precision, but if I can get it tight enough, eventually it will start landing more hits, and then I hope to start knocking them down in a controlled order… it’s pretty ambitious, but that’s my goal.

This is my goal as well. Not to minimize Mersa or Channing's accomplishment, I still haven't done better than 4 in the current format, but I won't be satisified until I can do them sequentially. (and 4 might have been a fluke, so really, 3 is my best and not even on camera, so does it count? I would say no )
