Title: I've got a big tool ! Post by xud9a - call me zud 👍 on Mar 30th, 2021 at 9:31pm
Binary oppositions......
Day and night. Slingers and everybody else. Coffee or Tea. Tool user or someone who needs help ;D My big tool is a 14lb sledgehammer but a size competition is not for this thread. I'm a bloke, I am genetically required to look at, fondle, caress and admire hand tools. What is your most useful tool ? No, not the one in your trousers, and, I do not want to revisit the argument on swiss army or leatherman....... hammer (rock) and blade will always be needed before pliers !!! ;D Today I bought a multi wrench. It has 8 sockets on one handle. The 8mm sleeved and spring loaded inside the 12mm and so on up to 21mm. Only time will tell wether it is a worthy addition to the tool box or another lump of metal to be used as a sinker. I will report back on wether it is a treasure or a turkey. So, which of your tools has paid for itself and which are dead weight ? Does a toolbox multi tool exist or are they all simple cash removal devices ? Cheers Zud [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

I bought this axe off of ebay ages ago for something like £20. One of my best buys ever. Keeps it's edge well, is comfortable and is basically indestructible. I love it.

So wait....
Youre just going to name this thread that and pretend like nothing happened. You naughty, naughty man you! Straight adze/bearded hatchet Bought this about a month ago and it just arrived from Sweden. The wait was brutal but it chops like a real MF'er. Hence the trademark. |

It says "William Rodgers, I cut my way" No idea who William Rodgers is but he makes a good axe.

@ Morphy. The patented Johnson is a marvellous device. Mine is not as big as his but its a lot wider and made of brass ::)
@ Kick. Only one of the most famous Sheffield knife makers. What you have there technically doesn't exist so I suspect its a contract job. I have several knives with Sheffield names but PRC stamps. It looks good and it works, what more can you ask ? https://www.eggintongroup.co.uk/brands.html Cheers Zud [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

Huh I didn't know that. Cool! Explains why it's such a nice axe I guess. |

As some of you might recall, in 2015 my town got hit by a tornado. It made a mess of my trees. The damage is still visible today. The tornado dumped countless tons of twisted tree wreckage on my fence and in my yard. It took months to clean up. The most useful tool I had was my branch clippers. I did more work with them than with the chain saw, bow saw, or ax. It cuts three inch thick branches or roots like butter. I was very thankful to have this.
Edit: I stuck my boot in there for some perspective but it didn't work because my feet are big... 13 EEE. The clippers are bigger than they appear in the picture. |

This is about the perfect tool for me. I like big knives / small machetes with steel that only requires a file to make sharp.

Hmmm,
I opened the other, other, er, other toolbox yesterday and found the multiwrench. Is it a turkey, Don't know, I haven't used it. I have used my socket set a few times and no doubt if I had stored the multiwrench in the socket drawer it would have had some use. Update soon. Cheers Zud [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

6 inch super bright LED flashlight. Used for everything when looking in and around machinery. Great for finding the cat at night when playing hide and seek. Can't afford night vision and too bulky.

@Happydrow
Many seem to forget how a good torch is demanded by even a basic tool box. Nice one 👍 P.S. the primary initiation rite for a newbie is learning how to resize pictures !!! Cheers Zud [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

Update Doing winter prep and creosoting all outdoor timber. In order to dismantle gate furniture and other items I used the multiwrench. It is now in the main tool tote. I found removing and replacing nuts easy .... Ooo er missis ..... Seriously, using a socket and ratchet is quicker and easier than a spanner ( as you know) but where the multi wrench won out was not having to take a socket from its bar, put it on the ratchet, find it is the wrong one, replace it, get the right one and so on to change sizes. The multi wrench replaces 8 sockets so for the popular sizes with good access it has earnt a place in the main tool tote . Mine is a cheap one so the handle material is soft and damages easily. The ratchet has about half the teeth of the socket set ratchet so it is slower to use but given the above, still quicker overall. Cheers Zud. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

And rebuilding, don't forget the rebuilding. Without that process no gate, only a pile of planks !!!
