Title: Mushroom Hunting 2021
Post by Morphy on Feb 24th, 2021 at 5:36pm
Friends, Family, Lurkers, and that cat that is sitting in front of your screen pretending not to be able to read perfect English:

It is time for the annual, or at least, hypothetically annual Mushroom Hunting thread.

I would like to invite anyone who wants to to please post any pics of both fungi and pictures involving mushroom hunting. Such as a nice forest scene with mushies, or really anything nature or that can be called in some way related to the activity of mushroom hunting. Sling pics of course are fine just take it on the ground near a mushroom lol.

The only I thing I ask is we do our best not to spam too many pictures of non-mushrooms. Some are always nice to set the mood though.

This year I “borrowed” an ID template for anyone interested in getting ID’s on mushrooms (or taking part in the ID process itself. ) We have several members here now that have grown considerably in their ID skills so whether right or wrong we will have a guess for you at some point lol.

Please understand that the mushroom kingdom is incredibly complex. For best results on ID’s please see the template at the bottom of this thread and give all pertinent information you have available, multiple pics in good lighting for each ID requested is strongly suggested. One from looking down but close to see the substrate it is in and how it grows in relation to other mushrooms in the same group, one from the side, a close up of the gills etc. More the better but not necessary.

Please be aware nothing on this thread is meant to indicate you should eat a mushroom that you personally are not 100% sure is a safe mushroom. I, nor anyone else here, can definitively ID a mushroom as safe or toxic. Find a local mycology group in your area and start learning from experts face to face. That is the only safe way to learn.

I could care less if you are trying to get high. If it’s a mushroom and you want an ID, post it. Really could not care less. No trip reports though. This is not a thread for glorifying drug use no matter how little I personally care about it. Jokes are fine always, but please no long detailed reports on captaining a pirate ship across the galaxy.

If you are new here please feel free to take part even if you have no pictures to add. Questions, comments, concerns etc are all welcome. Pictures are what make’s these threads really pop. Keep that in mind.

Any post suggesting a person should eat a mushroom they are trying to get ID’ed on this thread will be deleted. No exceptions. You can however say that you tried it of your own accord if you so choose and give us any details on dishes prepared with it. This is one of the best parts of a thread like this. Just please, one more time, DO NOT EAT ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT 100% sure on. Assuming you are not a minor, that is, in which case find an expert to help you and get your parent’s permission of course.

Sorry about all the rules, but hopefully you all can understand. This is a great thread until it isn’t if you catch my drift.

Ok,

Template:

* Habitat What kind of trees were nearby?  What was it growing from?
    * Location Where in the world was it?
    * Gills What do they look like?  Always try to take photos that show the gills of both young and mature mushrooms.
    * Stem Carefully dig it out of the ground so you can get a picture of the whole thing.
    * Spore print color (if you have time)
    * Scent of the mushroom.
    * Color that the mushroom bruises when damaged.
    * Anything else you might find important

Remember when digging mushrooms that some can grow from egg like sacs under the surface. Remember to dig all the way down until you are sure you find the very bottom.

Poisonous mushrooms can be touched without danger but care must be taken to wash hands well afterwards. Obviously don’t suck on fingers and keep them out of your mouth lol. In fact, just ask yourself this question, “Do I want deadly poison on this part of my body?” If the answer is no, don’t do it.  If you have any cuts consider wearing latex gloves, which is simpler anyways all the way around.  I’ve held and handled most of the extremely deadly mushrooms available in NA, still here and kicking. Just be safe and use common sense: Death Caps are not lollipops, but they sure are beautiful. Just respect them because they don’t respect you.

Other than that, Let’s make this the best year yet!   :D

I’ll start us out with a very magical spore print. This is from Psilocybe Cubensis. A well known Magic Mushroom. Spores from active mushrooms are not illegal to own. How I got this print is quite the miracle. I was walking in a field and someone took the mushroom cap off and placed it on a piece of aluminum foil an hour before I got there. I flicked the dirty, evil, illegal mushroom cap away and took the pure, virtuous and legal spores.

Psilocybe spores when new are purple. Some are quite a beautiful shade of purple. I can’t imagine a better color for a magic mushroom’s spores.

I’ll be posting to this very soon as we come into autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

I would like to add a little extra rule/disclaimer.
“Picking” a mushroom without any knowledge of its rarity or identification should be avoided.
No need to destroy anything that May be detrimental to the lifecycle.

Any how happy hunting

These are pictures of a species Ive been looking for for quite sometime. Amanita Jacksonii basically the American equivalent to A. Caesarea. Supposedly a very good mushroom Ive personally never had the desire to try it. I have some nice pictures from last year and since we didnt have one last year here they are.  ;D

As a boy my daddy said to me.....

If you aren't going to eat it, don't kill it.

I think this applies to people, animals, plants and fungi.

Amen, Mersa.

So thats a good point to bring up early in this thread.

Mushrooms are actually the fruit bodies of the actual organism. So the real organism itself is mycelium which is a cotton like mass living on whatever the mycelium is consuming. The mushrooms are like apples on an apple tree. If you dont pick them they will be dead in a few days and nothing is gained or lost.

Once the caps open and the spores drop the mushroom serves no more purpose to the organism except consuming more nutrients unnecessarily.  Dont be afraid to pick at this point.  Picking them for research is also considered fine but picking a whole patch thats close together instead of cutting them at the base of their stems is considered poor form as you could be ripping up large amounts of the actual organism. It will of course be just fine but there's no need. I always have one knife thats only for known edibles. The other is for everything else.

Although your mostly corect in regards to the mushroom being an “apple of sorts” there are other considerations. Mushrooms and fungi may be problematic in certain situations. Moving them can be potentially bad for the ecosystem.
Most of the time it’s fine but theses are some considerations.

Also not picking the mushrooms means there’s can potentially enjoy their beauty.

Just so long as we dont enjoy them too much?? Lol check this out. I give him credit for an interesting idea at least.

Im actually surprised it started growing. I wouldve thought boiling it would kill the spores.

This is a bizarre tip but it turns out Tumblr (of all websites) will resize an image you upload to the perfect size for the forum. It's literally the only reason I have a Tumblr account anymore. I just upload a photo as a queued post, right click and save the photo, delete the queued post and done. It's an absolutely stupid workaround but it works so well I can't be bothered to try anything else :D

Every Windows computer comes with Paint, which is super simple to use to resize pics.

I was a bit disappointed not to get any comment on the most boring fungus ever.

They are Daldinia Concentrica, common names King Arthur's Cakes, cramp balls or tinder fungus.

You can see the slugs chowing down on them.

The picture was taken in the hospital grounds at 3.15pm on 31st July 2019

Well, I can be baf if you wish (boring as feck).
They are called concentrica because when you break them open they have concentric rings, just like a trees growth rings.
They are called King Alfred's cakes because he dozed off, burnt the cakes and they look like supposedly burnt ( medieval) cakes.
They are called cramp balls because carrying one supposedly stops you getting cramp but of course, sewn into pockets on the back of your night shift stops you sleeping on your back and either s print or getting cramp !!!!
And, lastly, dried out, shredded is a convenient tinder or burnt whole, they are much like charcoal.
Deep joy,
Cheers
Did.

Ok have I let the tension build? Because that’s totally what I was doing waiting that long...had nothing to do with laziness or allergies making me want to sleep till the next ice age. Not. At. All.

So, question? What is the fastest  living thing on Earth relative to it’s size? For example, some of you might be thinking of the Cheetah. Yes very fast but not even close. Others might think, this is easy, the peregrine falcon. Well, while a peregrine falcon can dive at the equivalent of a human running at 380 mph (170 m/s) it is actually not the fastest.

Some of you are getting tricky right now and thinking...clearly it’s...the tiger beetle! A beetle that can run at the equivalent of roughly 480 mph were it the same size as a human. That’s 215 m/s for the civilized among us.

And yet...you are incorrect. Because the mighty fungus wins again.

The spores of Pilobolus Crystallinus accelerate at 20,000 G’s. Which for it’s size makes it much faster than these other speed demons. Of course it doesn’t go all that far but damnit...if you are a gnat and you accidentally fly too close, it’s going to kill you dead pardner!

Ok fine...Ill shut up here’s a video.  ;D

And though I have no reference to offer there is much evidence of  fungal spores in the high atmosphere...... As well as fastest could it be spores are also the most travelled organics , could float in the jet stream for years 🤔

Another Conocybe and that one looks even more like apala than the last which makes me question the previous. There are a few otbers the previous could be but its really hard to accurately identify some mushrooma to a species witbout a scope and DNA test.

Very possibly different growth stages, different genetics, slighlty different food source etc.
Or of course a different species altogether for the first vs the second. I could act like Im certain on all these IDs but that would just prove I know nothing. That is one of my best guesses though.

There are some active conocybes but this isnt one of them. I sure would love to find one though.

Here's a few.

These are ones I found just off my patio.  Saw them and got the picture the day I recorded my 1-Minute-Can challenge.

This one I saw when I was disc golfing with a friend.  We were on the Penn State New Kensington course.  It had a nice shape so after taking the picture I gave it a toss with a sling.  It didn't have much weight, but flew surprising well.  If I had known it was going to fly as well as it did, I would have recorded it.

.

And last, this little group was just off my driveway.  I saw it while cutting the grass.

panther caps. Not quite as much fun as the classic red and white amanitas the gnomes live under. Definitely not something you'd want to eat :-)

Kinda weird time of yesr to see them though. In the uk they are usually an autumn fungi. And primarily woodland as well.

@ca I knew they were inedible amanitas but thanks for the I.D. They were found in a half acre wooded dell on the big moor.  Early due to climate change ??
@ Morphy, we are both very happy  , cheers.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Saw these little guys in the yard at my mom and dad's place.  No idea what they are specifically, but I nicknamed them the hamburger bun mushrooms.  :D

The smaller ones with the red cap are Russulas. Easy to id to a genus but species is a little different.

Old hamburger bun mushroom could be a lot of things. But its not complete without a well seasoned, well grilled burger, mustard, mayo and ketchup, a very sharp cheddar and oh I suppose a tomato is acceptable but no lettuce because we arent heathens here.

Well finally figured out if Golden Chanterelles grow in my part of Texas....

This is my next door neighbors back yard. Wtf lol.

Arguably one of the best and tastiest of the gourment wild edible mushrooms mere feet away and it might as well be on the moon lol...

Still cool though. Gives me hope I can find some decent patches in my immediate area.

I recognize some there Joe. A russula, golden chanterelle, tawny grisette and possibly a very odd shaped gymnopilus on the bottom although i would have to look into that more, could be missing something really obvious. Some of those large gym species will cause you to trip hard. Taste like absolute crap though. Or so I hear.

The brown one could potentially be amanita porphyria or several other species of amanita though it does appear to at least be in the genus amanita.

Ok this is going to be an odd and really specific post... but its something just occurred to me the other day and it reminded me of a test Ive always wanted to try.

So anyways, as a background, the other day I was hunting for new mushroom species and found...*drum roll please* Copelandia Cyanescens, colloquially referred to as Blue Meanies. The reason being they are very ordinary looking beige/grey mushrooms that are actually super potent magic mushrooms. (The active ingredient psilocybin oxidizes blue as they age)

Unfortunately I forgot to get pics.  :'(

Heres some from the net.

(Look at all that bluing. A handful of those tiny mushrooms and you would forget you exist for a few hours.)

This got me thinking of a very odd thing about mushroom trips that some may not know. This is that when many people take mushrooms they actually see mushroom visuals all over the place. Like neon or flashing wavy mushrooms everywhere you look even when you close your eyes.

So my question is...what causes this? Why would a chemical cause you to see mushrooms like that? The obvious answer is because you know youve taken them.

Heres the catch, when I was taking them years ago I never knew this was a normal thing until reading others had the same experience. Its not like you see little blotter papers when taking LSD so I dont think this is just a psychedelic thing.

So heres the test I would love to run. Do a randomized trial where some people are given magic mushrooms in pill form so they dont know they are taking them and then see if they still see them.

The fascinating thing about this (to me) is this idea that a chemical has the ability to make you see a specific image. I dont understand how that works.

It's not the 1970s, you'll never get that past IRB anymore  ;D

I agree though, it would be fascinating.

Thats because they lack vision. Which, ironically, is where the mushrooms come in. It would be really interesting though.

The purple spored puffball. - Calvatia cyathiformis. This guy was a good sized one and very fresh. In retrospect I shouldve eaten it.

I like how their beauty is sort of hidden until they either get bruised or start drying a little.
Really if you get a magic mushroom and the bluing is deep its a color you almost never see in nature. At least not among plants and fungi. Its a super vivid almost neon blue at times. Truly beautiful man. The pics dont really do it justice.

Aminita Citrina - false death cap?

Title: Re: Mushroom Hunting 2021

Either Macrolepiota or Chlorophyllum species most likely.

The cap has a very pronounced umbo (protuberance or nipple) at the top which is more suggestive of the above genera and not as common in amanitas. The stem might be suggestive of the snakeskin observed on true parasol mushrooms but you would have to spore print it as well as do some further study to differentiate from a false parasol which drops green spore as opposed to the highly sought after and delicious Parasol.

The ring or annulus is thick and appears to be moveable whereas the annulus of the A. Citrina appears as most amanita species, wispy like a flowing silk cloth and easily damaged on touching.

An easy test to see if its an amanita is to dig around and approx 4 inches below the ground under the stem. If its growing out of an egg like case its an amanita.

However this is almost certainly one of the above two genera.

Good find Archaic. If its a true parasol they are reportedly very good eating though Ive never had one.

I saw a video on youtube years ago where a guy who fancied himself a shaman had a large death cap and ate the whole thing fresh. Apparently he didnt die or get sick. Im still wondering how he pulled that trick off. Supposedly they are actually pretty tasty.

You could probably dress up another similar mushroom to look like it, or he's built up a tolerance of amatoxin by eating very small amounts over several years (if that is possible).
Thanks for the info by the way! I agree the former mushroom is probably a parasol or parasol variant after looking it up.

that aminita citrina does look a lot like a parasol mushroom.

If you get them early they look just like chicken drumsticks - we used to get them some years back. And yeah very good eating :thumb:

If I remember right, false deathcaps tend to grow in groups and are edible, whereas actul deathcaps - of which I've seen only one, grow solitary.

It's not a theory I intend to ever put to the test :-)

When the coal mines were still active  - and I basically live on top of a honeycomb of deep mine shafts. At one point there were at least 10 mineheads within a mile.
what's that got to do with mushrooms - bear with me.
As a consequence we also had a lot of coal burning power stations in the area and some truly vicious acid rain.
That stuff used to make your eyes really sting.

However during the years we had the acid rain, we also had pretty much all the species of edible fungi you get in the uk, growing in the local woods and fields.

Gradually as the mines were closed and the power stations shutdown, the acid rain diminished and went and the mushrooms went with it.

I can only surmise that the acid used to break down a lot of materials in the soil into nutrients that really helped the mycelium to grow.

Haven't seen a cep or wood blewitt for a very long time. But once, they were pretty abundant.

Love that purple spored puffball morphy. Those veins look almost like a brian coral.

I've eaten giant puffball a couple times. if you egg and breadcrumb it, it fries like schnitzel.
Not a lot of flavour, but good eating.

Yes, its actually kind of like tofu in that sense isnt it? You choose the flavor to add to it. But at least it doesnt have a bunch of soy which in an age of falling mens testosterone is something we definitely dont need more of. Also you can find one large puffball and its a large meal.

Normal oysters from the tree are similar they dont have a huge amount of flavor but you know, spice them right and you are good to go. King oysters on the other hand are quite good with just a bit of butter and a pinch of garlic.

Uh Oh, Naughty Morphy with Naughty Mushrooms. Looks like I get psychedelic coal this year for Christmas. Better watch out Santa, those cookies hit hard.

The hand is there for scale. Very poor scale but scale nonetheless. No Im not picking it in these pics its just you dont get the full effect of a good size Psilocybe cubensis from a photo.  Also, observe the roundness and overall texture of the cow sh!+ next to it. Looks like he was eating figs perhaps? How bougie.

This actually isnt a huge cube. They can get quite big under the right circumstances. Yet two shrooms like this would definitely take you places. Jail or to some lizard dimension. Actually been to the second place. 60 fresh grams will do that. Oh the memories. I dont care for magic mushrooms though. I never found them to be fun though theres been some intriguing studies done showing they may play a big role in helping depression.
