Title: My latest Egyptian sling
Post by David Morningstar on Feb 11th, 2021 at 3:29pm
I want to start this by giving a big shout out to Jaegoor, Teg, and Sarosh, whose work I am following.

This is the third sling I have made on this loom. Each one has been better than the previous one, and this third one is pretty good so I will show the photos of its making.

My second sling had an asymmetric pouch due to having unequal tension down each side. The loose warp tension that was needed to fit the big wooden shuttle through the warp cords was a part of this.
To solve this I used needles instead of the shuttle and I also started weaving from the centre of the pouch out to each edge. Both outer edges would be completed at the same time so getting them equal would be easier.

Here is the start of the pouch on the loom. There are two warp threads running in opposite zig-zags across the loom, two cords in each slot. These paired warps are about twice as thick as the weft thread. The length of the weft is the number of warp pairs multiplied by the length across the warps, plus another metre or two for extra.

I put a needle on each end of the weft thread and centered the weft under the centre warp. I wove out to each end of the pouch and back in again to create a center strip. This strip helps to conceal the seam where the inner edges meet.
Then I wove outwards in the familiar expanding shape, one extra warp pair at the end of each row. I did a few rows on one side then a few rows on the other side so that everything would be as equal as possible. When I got to my longest rows I made even more sure that the tension was equal on each edge.

I then carefully pushed the weft into its final shape. This creates the slight cupped profile of the Egyptian pouch. The seam is well hidden by the center strip.

Tightening the warps from the center towards each end is a lengthy and sometimes confusing process. It is much easier to do this on the loom by loosening the ends of the loom and introducing enough slack to unhook the warps one by one. Great care was taken to make sure the weft was given the same amount of compression all the way along. The end result was perfectly symmetrical and had a pleasing boat-like shape.

The remaining weft at each end was pulled back into the pouch along the warps using a needle and trimmed off. The warp threads were trimmed to length (there is a lot of waste from this method, the warps are very long) and reverse twisted into the retention and release cords. Some more weft thread was used to bind the transition of pouch into cord to protect it from abrasion.

I am impressed David.  You did very well.  I can't do it any better.  Respect.

This is the final result. I could have compressed the weft a bit more when tightening the warp, this would make it look denser and more like the original. Other than that I am happy with it. I might give this one to the Egyptology curator at the museum.

Great work David!  What are the dimensions of that loom you have?

And also a good tuto.

Nice work!

I have still yet to ever make an Egyptian. Does the cup help without causing an increase in ill timed shots?

My one major complaint with pure fiber flat pouched slings is how easily they can drop shots compared to other types of slings. This seems like a good half way point in between the two.

Thanks vertryan15 and TOMBELAINE!

Morphy: The cupping isnt excessive. This is another feature of the central stripe, as Jaegoor said it adds support to the pouch.

I do not use this type of weaving.  You do not have to weave the two bag halves the wrong way round.  You can do that, but it's cumbersome.  You can also weave the shape directly.  It's a lot faster and easier too.  The fabric is then pulled together.  This makes it very solid.  Maybe you just try it out.  An advantage.  You can start running right away.

@Morphy In my experience, the cupping does effect the timing, but not excessively. It is noticeable if you switch back to a flat sling, but I only noticed it after doing many throws.

Never used a loom for woven pouches but never found the need to, but I see it can give a nice unique effect. Does it produce a lot of waste cordage? I never like waste cordage

There is a lot of excess warp cord once the sling is finished. The offcuts are so long I have hanked them up to reuse them for other projects.

So long as the timing is consistent i suppose it doesnt matter much. Guess I would prefer less dropped shots in that case.

Not to ruin the threads, the answer is in the 6th and 7th pictures. Just twist the chain wires together on each side of the pouch.
