Title: My favorite rubber balls for ammo
Post by RJB on Dec 1st, 2020 at 2:11pm
I teach slinging at primitive skills gatherings.  The last time was at the Firefly Gathering outside of Asheville NC where we made and used slings.

I would use tennis balls in the past over rocks for obvious reasons for anyone who has watched a newbie sling.  However, I never liked the weight.

The last two classes I gave I used these:

https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ALeKk00rMHunrBhrMQY7F-ZX5uFayqTYxg%3A1606849488392&source=hp&ei=0JPGX9jLFIaosgXA47HoDA&q=hi+bounce+pinky&oq=hi+bou&gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQARgAMgUIABDJAzICCAAyAggAMgIIADICCAAyBAgAEAoyAggAMgQIABAKMgQIABAKMgIIADoECCMQJzoICC4QsQMQgwE6DgguELEDEIMBEMcBEKMCOgUIABCxAzoICC4QxwEQrwE6AgguOgUILhCxAzoICAAQsQMQgwE6CwguELEDEMkDEJMCOgoIABCxAxCDARAKOggIABCxAxDJA1C9AVj8DGD6IWgAcAB4AIABqgSIAe0IkgEHMC40LjUtMZgBAKABAaoBB2d3cy13aXo&sclient=psy-ab

I like the weight and found that I am more accurate with these because I am more used to the weight of rocks and homemade clay glandes.  Also the rubber balls make the class more lighthearted than using something used in actual war :)

Does anyone have safe ammo that they use for teaching?

Also, I have been gone awhile, but it's good to be back.

Sock balls, which are rolled up socks. You can play dodgeball while teaching slinging, kids and adults without killing anyone. Its very popular on this forum

I've been gone awhile from this forum.  I will test those out when I get home from work today, if the sun is still up.

I use this for indoor slinging, as I prefer a glade over a ball:

I will try that too.  I like ammo with a bit of density.

My favorite rubber balls are these https://www.pinterest.com/pin/277745502001354790/

Dollar Tree used to sell them in stores and they fly very far. I can easily sling one over 300 feet and have been able to sling the golf ball one 400 feet. It's a shame I haven't found them in stores anymore. There is this weird ball attached to an elastic band that is made out of the same material though. It is way bigger but is similar.

''Franklin No 1915 Rubber Baseballs'' have replaced my tennisballs.
They are rubber training baseballs that weight around 110g.
They bounce back but not as hard as a tennisball. So it's great for throwing against walls/indoors but when you just want a little heavier weight to sling then a tennisball.
I happened to get a box of 10 of them for 15 bucks.

I'm looking for a solid rubber ball that weighs about 3-4 ounces. Preferably 4 ounces. Ideally with a smaller diameter than a racquetball. If anyone knows of a suitable ball I would appreciate it.

I have no idea how much it weighs, but dollar tree sells this rubber ball with an elastic band that's meant to be a toy but you can snip the elastic band off and have a very good rubber ball. Rubber, dense, and flies far.

Saw those yesterday.  Was very tempted to buy a few.  Maybe I'll go back and get some.

Excellent. We have a dollar tree close by I'll have to check them out.

Have been away from this forum for more than 10 years!

I've been thinking about mini sandbags as safe ammo! Heavy, yet soft! Slinging tennis ball is always a bad idea. :)

Welcome back! Sandbags can pack quite a punch though. There's a reason they use them in shotguns for riots.

Basically the same as sock balls, but I really like wool dryer balls. They’re about $1 each on Amazon. My 6yo was just chasing me around the yard with a cardboard sword a few minutes ago. I tagged him with several sheep balls in self defense, and there was nothing but laughs when they hit him... ultimately the sword was triumphant :)

Yeah, that's about the weight that I like.  My accuracy is off with lighter stuff.

I go with Jaegoor's rusty balls. They best about them is they don't bounce back. I once tried using a golf ball for target slinging against a concrete wall and it came straight back to me. I could barely evade it :o

Right. It's funny that it should even matter but it definitely does.
