Title: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by NooneOfConsequence on Nov 14th, 2020 at 10:08pm
It’s that time again!  As everyone gets ready for SITH, there’s no better way to sharpen your sling-making skills than to build a sling out of trash and maybe even win some prizes!

Here’s the rules:
1. The sling must be made of at least two materials, and at least one of the materials should be garbage.
2. Post a video on YouTube showing you successfully making 5 consecutive throws using ammunition that weighs more than 50g... preferably a tennis ball, but rocks are ok if you don’t have any tennis balls on hand.  Indoor videos are ok too, but we need to see some real throws to make sure your sling holds up.
3. You may make multiple entries. No repeats from last year though. Try something new!

That’s it! Be creative.   Bonus points for entertaining videos that tell a story. Videos must be posted by April 1, 2021. The prize is a Grim Workshop fishing card and cordage tool (photo below) . Joe Meadmaker is also putting up some mead!

Have fun!

Awesome! My one last year was a bit of cheat I feel so I'll have to see what I can do this time.

Nice!  I was wondering if you were going to post this challenge again.  I thought of doing it myself.

As the reigning champion of the Trash Sling Challenge, I'll donate a prize for the winner of this year's challenge.  Just a hint.  It will come in a bottle.  ;)

I'd like to see that entry!  Even if it means this challenge will turn into a poll like the pumpkin challenge, or some other method of voting.

I’ll get involved in this for sure, but I really want to push myself this time .

Joe, how much cash can fit in a bottle? I'm not picky any amount over a hundred will do!

Ok I'm tentatively in on this one. The SITH one is going to be a beast but this will give me something fun to mess with. Let's kick some trash.

It’s really not that hard to make a decent video. All you need to do is tell some sort of story (as opposed to being overly focused on technical nuances of slinging), make copious use of jump cuts (removing excessive repetition and unnecessary motions that can be assumed like reloading ... this goes along with not being too technical) in your editor of choice, and grab some free music from filmmusic.io

Title: Re: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by Morphy on Nov 17th, 2020 at 10:47pm
All music is free if you know where to get it my good man. The viruses that come with it are just a bonus.

Title: Re: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by NooneOfConsequence on Nov 17th, 2020 at 11:57pm
Ha! I mean royalty free. It costs nothing but a line in the credits for attribution, and it’s 100% sanctioned for use in your video. I had a specific song I wanted to use in a video announcing the birth of my son several years ago, and to keep it all above-board, it cost me $200 for a non-commercial license to use the song one time! I can usually find something that fits the mood of my videos on filmmusic.io these days.

Looking forward to it Kick!  I have the raw materials for mine.  Although I might try to do a couple this year since there is so much time.  I'll be getting to that as soon as my SITH sling is done, which is getting there.

Oh man!  I'm working on something extremely similar.  It's all good.  I'm happy to be a copycat.  :D

Nice sling Kick!  How would you rate the strength?  Do you think it could go for a while, or likely to break after a fairly small number of throws?  From your video, I wasn't sure if the rock just slipped out or if the sling actually broke.  Not holding up for very long is the concern I have with the one I'm putting together.

Title: Re: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by Kick on Dec 9th, 2020 at 4:55pm
I'm not sure entirely. I think it could last a fair while. Abrasion moght be a problem but I always use smooth stones so it would take a while to wear out. It has a fair amount of stretch but I can't tell if that's the twining "evening out", the fibres pulling apart or the plastic itself stretching. I haven't pushed it all that far but it seems sturdy enough to last a fairly long time so I would say it's survival-situation-friendly. I've think it would have to be a pretty heavy rock to straight up snap it.

I laughed multiple times during the video. Something about taking bread out of your sling before use struck me as amusing. And dropping the rock in front of your (I assume) significant other definitely reminds me of some of my experiences. I plan on using whatever Ricky bandit uses to send me his SITH sling in for making my sling. Slingception I think it's called.

Joe, NICE! You adjusted to the new release timing really quickly.

You're into disc golf too! I've been hittin' the disc golf hard since March.  What do you think about trying to do a video on Brodie Smith's tagline for the end of his videos? It could be entertaining... I'm thinking of doing one myself.

Title: Re: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by joe_meadmaker on Dec 12th, 2020 at 10:30am
Thanks man!

The basket got put in because there used to be a trampoline in that spot (junky one that came with the house).  I got rid of it, and then that area (all by itself) turned into a garden of goldenrod, stuff with thorns, and other weeds.  Being that I had to dig it out anyway, I wanted to do something more interesting than just plant grass.  It is cool having a basket in the yard.  I'm much more of a casual player.  My year sounds like it's been the opposite of yours.  I've only been out a few times.

I'm fairly certain I know the tagline you're talking about.  I've thought about trying that quite a few times.  I think I have an idea for a pouch that would work.  The problem is I can't think of any way to keep the disc flat during the throw and into the release.  But because that the trash sling is done, this could be something to look into.  :)

There was a post from J or Sarosh a while ago that mentioned that a "Y" sling was able to sling flat stones and get them to spin correctly. I have yet to try it, but I think a scaled up version for a disc would be the best thing.  It would be fun to try.

Title: Re: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by joe_meadmaker on Dec 12th, 2020 at 6:03pm
That's a good thought.  That might work better than what I had in mind.  I was thinking more of a net pouch that would wrap around the disc.  A Y-pouch would give three points of contact too, which could help with stability.  I think I'm going to give that a try and will post any results.  I'll start a new thread though so we don't distract from the Trash Sling Challenge anymore than we already have.

I know that feeling. I had a plan for my trash sling, but then today I found myself squirreling away new trash and thinking I could make a sling from an unexpected source. I might have to do multiple entries.

This may have already been covered but I like the concept and am so ready to get started I have no time to read this whole thread to see if this had been previously discussed...

So what constitutes and defines trash?
Some people have some unique garbage...

How do we know someone isnt gonna say "well of course I threw away the hair from my horse's tail and mane after I shaved them" or some outlandish thing lol...   ;)

Title: Re: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by Kick on Dec 18th, 2020 at 4:43am
I think it will have to be a case by case basis. By the way, I have a load of sisal fibre just hanging around in a bin so I think that's probably trash...

Title: Re: Trash Sling Challenge 2020
Post by NooneOfConsequence on Dec 18th, 2020 at 10:03am
So far we have left it up to self-interpretation. When the competition is big enough that we have a $10,000 cash prize, we may have to rethink that a bit.

I think I spelled it out more last year. The main criteria for trash is that you can’t buy something (like a roll of yarn) just to make the sling, but it’s ok to use store-bought things like yarn or glue as long as the majority of the sling is “trash”.

Here’s my original description:

NooneOfConsequence wrote on Nov 10th, 2019 at 11:48am:
Ok, I have a challenge for y’all... the trash sling challenge!  This isn’t a slinging skill challenge, it’s a sling making competition. I want to see what happens when people get creative with new sling materials and building styles.
Here’s the idea: make a sling from anything, but you aren’t allowed to spend any money on it at all. The sling should be capable of launching a tennis ball at least 5 times in a row (video proof) before it falls apart. You should have at least two different materials in the sling. Bonus points for creativity, complexity, and video production quality. Emphasis is on making the sling from TRASH... i.e.  I don’t want you to wander into the woods and make a sling entirely out of scavenged natural fibers, but you could, for example scavenge natural cordage and then make a pouch out of newspaper or a broken plastic cup.

Good luck!

Good news! I finally got a pouch and cord combination that actually worked. I managed to film a few shots this morning (surprisingly accurate), and now I just need to compile and edit the footage. I can’t promise that it’ll be as entertaining as the pumpkin challenge, but it was certainly as complicated of a project... especially with all of the failed attempts.

I am a little bummed about giving up on the plastic cordage before figuring out that I really just needed to wet the corn husks, but I wanted to get my entry posted, so I opted not to keep filming.

I definitely could've used a single strand.  There's plenty of strength there, and a multi-stranded soda bottle cord is definitely not ideal, but I thought using a single strip would be way less entertaining :)

The food theme was not intentional.  Most of the trash generated in my house comes from the kitchen, and I definitely don't want to make any slings from trash found in the diaper pail! (...or do I??? Hmmm)

Plastic bags have already been done a few times.  There's still plenty that could be done with those materials (trash bag Balearic anyone?), but I was looking for something a little different just for the challenge of working with new materials.

I'm still upset that, first you cut the tab off my SITH, and then after using it yourself, you just threw it in the trash.  [smiley=angry.gif]

Actually what I was going to do is send it to you a couple days before your real SITH sling and pretend I was actually serious lol. But no that's too far even for me.

I had more hope at first. My shots weren't too far off. Well some. But as it went on it became laughably bad. I need practice .  :'(  ::)

Nice!  Your second and third shots trying to beat the falling rock were pretty darn close.

Good attempt on the trash sling too.  You might have been the first to pull stuff out of the trash as opposed to just using stuff that was going to go in.  :D

Thanks Joe. Well my first shot with the normal sling I actually had a bit of hope that I might get a lucky hit. But that was not to be. I always have fun slinging though. Regardless of how bad I may be.  ;D ;D

The confidence with which you wielded the scissors instantly told me you cut the wrong length :D

;)

I thoroughly enjoyed the title, despite it being false. No one would hit the target with those garbage stones.

Have you ever noticed that your power-pull (power-stroke or whatever you call it) is almost exactly like your over-shoulder throw?  The one video that you just did the one throw and then decided that, "yeah, that was ok, and gall darn it, I'm a good person".   Anyway, just an observation.

Ive actually never even considered that IG. Ive been learning a lot recently from you all. What you saw in that video was not "quite" how I throw. I realized that afterwards. Reverting to bad habits and all that. Can't wait to get some decent ammo made and start practicing again.

Awesome!  Can’t wait to see what you came up with.

And if your video looks like trash... it’ll fit the theme of the competition ;D

Well, time is getting short, so it’s probably about time to announce a prize to encourage people who are on the fence to jump in.

The winner will receive a Grim Workshop fishing card and a slightly used Grim workshop cordage tool, complete with spare blades. This is the same cordage tool I used in my trash sling video.

... and winner will be selected by community votes rather than my personal diktat. I am excluding myself from the prize, so it would go to the runner-up if I somehow got the most votes.

You have a month to put in as many entries as you want! Obviously votes for each entry will be counted separately.

Nice!  That pouch actually looked pretty fancy.  Looked like a ribbon.
I like the testing with different styles too. :thumb:

Sad ending though.  :'(

Yeah thanks guys, it was made from a gold ribbon a white ribbon and the sleeves my bow limbs came in. Basically the gift wrapping that came on my bow limbs minus the cardboard box.

In addition to the awesome prize from NOC, here's what I'll be throwing in.  This is my newest mead.  It's a traditional made from goldenrod honey.  Very unique (in a good way) taste.  I'll actually throw in a bottle for first and second place.  If I win either of those rankings, that bottle will bump down to the third place winner.

Also, if someone doesn't drink or just isn't interested in this as a prize (which is totally cool), I'll send a sling instead.

That's great! That's far tougher looking cord than I thought could be made from masks. Awesome job!

It was the 1st of April (mentioned in the first post of this topic).  :(

You can still post a video if you want.  I think we would all like to see it.

You can also vote for the winner here: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1617637262.  I don't think anyone is going to catch Peashooter at this point.
