Title: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Morphy on Nov 5th, 2020 at 7:24pm
So I'm pacing through my house trying to work up the motivation to gather all my sling stuff and begin the prep work (which I'm decidedly NOT fond of lol) and it occurs to me ya know... we live in a post covid world... there's nothing at all keeping us from doing zoom meetings is there? That's right gentlemen. A zoom meeting. I'm throwing the gauntlet down here. Anyone interested? Probably best if we have more than two lol. If not just know I will still love you all even if I give you the stink eye here from Texas.
Just so we are clear on the severity of a good stink eye. Make your choice MEN. |
Title: Re: Ya know... Post by NooneOfConsequence on Nov 5th, 2020 at 11:06pm
Zoom, eh? Ok. Why not. Of course you were probably hoping to rope in someone who lives more than 3 hours away from you. You don’t really need Zoom to give a fellow Texan the stink eye.

The fact that this hasn't occurred to any of us before now is a serious oversight. I'm in :D Finland should be far enough away. Of course one problem is we're going to start running into timezone issues but we can cross that bridge when we burn it.

Damn right sir!! I would love to chat with some fellow Slorgies. And see your different projects and stuff. As for bridges I’m pretty sure Ive got them all but if I missed one we could definitely burn it too. Some Ive burned even twice which I didn’t know was possible. NOOC- Well yes, we are relatively close if you don’t take my laziness and your busyness into account. Also I’m reasonably sure with your profession that at least one of your children is a mandroid. Which terrifies me. But yes we should definitely get together some time and throw some rocks. I would love to actually have a fellow slinger to sling with even if just for a day. I’ll wait a week and see if anyone else is interested. I would love to get a nice group together to tell stories and chat. |

Yeah time zone is the thing to think about.
They do one on my bbq forum, but it’s 5pm pacific time (I know I know, Americans have never worked out that there are other countries in the world and we all use a standard time measurement :-) Which works out to about 10pm my time. Or dinner time. It’s when my medication wears off and I start feeling like eating again. So we’ll either need it early afternoon for the yanks, either puts Mersa in the middle of the night or their middle of the morning, or late night for the yanks. I lose track on the antipodes. I believe they’re 9 hours ahead of the uk, or 11. Quite what’s that equates to in us time - will take some working out :-) Let’s face it - it’s you awkward buggers in North America with your 3 time zones that bugger things up. We British invented time so if we could all work with GMT as the base point - it would make it easier to work out:whistle: Let’s list our time zones and we can go from there. I’m at GMT: 0 Never done a zoom - But I have sorted it out for a few clients recently. And my new-to-me(old one my mate gave me) iPad Pro is a decent size for it. I’m not an apple fan and for the 800 odd quid he originally paid for it, it was massively over priced. But for a freebie with neat fold out keyboard cover - great little piece of kit :-) I’ll go download zoom and have a play. |
Title: Re: Ya know... Post by Curious Aardvark on Nov 9th, 2020 at 7:35am
I’m all zoomed up :-)
Stickied the thread and changed title to hopefully pull in more members. Lets see what we get :-) |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by NooneOfConsequence on Nov 9th, 2020 at 9:43am
GMT -6 depending on daylight savings... but I also have an infant in the house... the fourth one in 6 years. Sleeping hours are a long lost concept, so my timezone is probably less relevant than most.
|
Title: Re: Ya know... Post by Morphy on Nov 9th, 2020 at 2:51pm
Working on figuring out a time I can do this. Good to hear others are interested. Be aware that in Houston all Zoom meetings are clothing optional. But I will try to have a strategically placed sock.
|
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by vetryan15 on Nov 9th, 2020 at 3:07pm
Gmt -5, but iam technology impaired so i shall see.
@Morphy that reminds me of the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS concertnack in the late 90s. Nothing but tube socks |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by joe_meadmaker on Nov 9th, 2020 at 3:14pm
I would be interested if I'm available at the decided time.
I am also GMT -5. |

Forgot to mention I am also GMT -6.
@Vetryan I definitely remember that haha. :D |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by JudoP on Nov 9th, 2020 at 3:42pm
GMT 0
But I will be unable to do anything this week. Also I have unlimited zoom so we won't be stuck with the 40 min limit. |

I'm going to try and get on Zoom tonight at 6am Monday GMT (12 am Central Standard Time)
If anyone is interested. :thumb: I'll post the link later. (I hope, never set up a Zoom meeting myself.) I'll be at the station so if I don't show assume I'm on a call. ;) |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Kick on Nov 15th, 2020 at 10:40am
So for me (GMT +2) 8am? I think I can just about manage that. I may be half asleep (or 3/4 asleep...) but I can try :D

Who you kidding Kick you work in medical. You don't get sleep. Lol. That would be 2 am here? I think. I'll try to get on at 12am (my time). If I can't sleep or if I get a late call and I'm up anyways I'll jump on around 2am. I have the sock ready so should be good to go. |

My bad you are correct sir. Well, I may have jinxed myself. Busy day already and then some person drove down I45 with faulty brakes or something and sparked up grassfires all along the roadway for miles. So, so very awesome. I smell like I would taste good with barbeque sauce right now. I really want to get on Zoom but the fates have deemed otherwise. I will try again next shift. |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by NooneOfConsequence on Nov 16th, 2020 at 2:37am
Too bad. Normally I have a very precious sleep window between midnight and 4AM CST, but somehow my family picked up a virus (a cold... not coronavirus) in spite of the lockdown, and each of my kids has taken turns screaming throughout the night. I am wide awake... although I probably would not have been the most engaging conversationalist under the circumstances.

Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Morphy on Nov 16th, 2020 at 8:09pm
Ok, tomorrow is the plan if anyone is interested, same time, same place. If all goes well I will be sitting in the fire station talking to someone in a different part of the country/world. Be there Gents if you can! I promise to be dressed-ish.
|
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Kick on Nov 17th, 2020 at 8:14am
Same time? I unfortunately have a morning shift tomorrow so I will already be hard at work. I'll have to catch the next one.
|
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Morphy on Nov 17th, 2020 at 9:24am
Ya the time zone thing is tough but eventually this should work. Lot cheaper than a plane ride too. Can't wait to take part in a slinging competition via zoom. ;D
Ya but I'll try to be on. At work seems to be the best time to do it. Just depends on the calls. |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by vetryan15 on Nov 17th, 2020 at 12:46pm
I will try to join in at some point, i just gotta figure out zoom. Never did it, but did hear that on Thanksgiving and black Friday, zoom will be allowing unlimited zoom calls for the holidays. I heard on the radio, so might want to check that out to confirm.
|
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Morphy on Nov 17th, 2020 at 1:25pm This will be me tonight. If that doesn't make you all want to join I don't know what will. 12 am Central Standard Time. I'll pop on and see if anyone is coming. Maybe wait ten minutes if no one shows I'll try again another day. :thumb: |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by vetryan15 on Nov 17th, 2020 at 2:28pm
I wont be awake. My bedtime is 9am. Usually iam so tired i am asleep before that. Maybe try something in the evening littlee bit earlier. Lol.

Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Morphy on Nov 19th, 2020 at 7:46pm
I would love for this to work. At least a little better than the old chat function we had here. ;D
I'll hop on at 10 pm and 11pm CST tonight (3 and 4 hours from now) if anyone is bored, drunk or otherwise looking to chill. If you are on the fence just remember the rules for drinking clearly state that if at least one person in the group is after 5pm drinking is fair game for the whole group. |
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Kick on Nov 19th, 2020 at 7:48pm
Probably shouldn't have stayed up to almost 3am. I might have been able to make 11pm CST otherwise...
|
Title: Re: Zoom meeting please register you timezone Post by Morphy on Nov 23rd, 2020 at 1:28pm
At work which is often the best time for me to try this since I typically don't sleep great. I'll try to get on again at somewhere between 10PM -12AM CST if anyone is available. Which is 4am to 6am GMT. Not super surprised this has not been done since it's so hard to coordinate a group even when everyone lives in the same time zone. As always if I am not there I am probably on a call. Anyways hope to see ya there. ;)

For me my schedule is very weird. I work a lot of hours each pay period but technically only about 10-11 days a month. Weird I know. So it's easy for me to try and make it work but realistically for most it's going to be quite difficult. But I couldn't agree with Vet more. I want to meet my slinging.org family. Either on Zoom or down at Mallorca.

What bit of software is being used ?
I'm generally around and online in my workshop 19:00ish to 22:00 GMT. Which is 1100 west coast time and 1400 easy coast USA. (That's a genuine typo, but appropriate :-) 1900gmt is about 0600 the next day in Australia and 2000 mainland Europe. During the great spamwars having everybody spread out around the clock was extremely useful. Not so great for anything else  So is there a link that's always live that people can drop in and out of ? And would it be useful to set up a standard chat room ? We've got a decent one on smoked-meat.com that I believe is entirely independent of the forum, I can get the details from Ken. |

Permament always open, drop in chat room. We'll see how it goes and if it does the job, I'll add link to the main forum template. Looks pretty good so far. Oh and no account or email or any other info, needed, just use it as a guest. To change your nickname (and various other things), click the little gear at the bottom of the screen. If you could use your forum usernames, it would probably make life a lot less confusing :-) lol And gaius - no - just no ! lol (yeah you know what I'm talking about) |
