Title: Pumpkin Challenge! Vote for the winner
Post by IronGoober on Nov 1st, 2020 at 10:13pm
Time to vote for the Pumpkin Challenge! Everyone is encouraged to vote!

The winner of the challenge is getting a portable slinging target.

The rules are simple, please vote for the video that is the best using the following criteria:

1. Entertainment value,
2. Difficulty,
3. Encompassing the spirit of the sling. (whatever that may mean to you, personally.)

Voting for yourself is discouraged.

Please watch the entries, and don't forget to vote in the poll. Voting is currently set to close December 1st.

This was a really hard choice. If I had known how stiff the competition was going to be I wouldn't have rushed my entry so much. Next year is going to be interesting :D

Man, that was a tough choice, but you got my vote Joe, both because your video told a story (entertainment value) and because of your excellent t-shirt choice (MAJOR style points ;D)

Thanks man!

This is exciting.  We've got a heated race for second place!  :D

Ha! With only 4 votes, I’d hardly say my lead is locked in, even if it is double the second place crowd :)

Currently a 4 way tie for 2nd, or does that make all of us in 5th place?

Title: Re: Pumpkin Challenge! Vote for the winner
Post by joe_meadmaker on Nov 6th, 2020 at 11:01am
Either a tie for 5th, or a tie for 2nd with the next place being 6th.  I usually prefer the latter method because 2 votes would be the second highest count at the moment.

I'm not gonna lie, I was hoping you'd be around for your own entry, but c'est la vie. I remember one of your watermelon slinging videos that was impressive.

You were also fighting against bad weather Kick... you had a much narrower window to film than most of us.

13?! That’s only slightly more votes than contest participants!

Well, at this point I don't think it's going to affect the results drastically or change anyone's votes, so I might as well announce the winner of the random Razor Glande facemask drawing...

Congrats Mersa!

I hope you like it!

I’m already planning next year’s pumpkin challenge, I know exactly what I’ll be doing and it’s a serious challenge in itself, as always filming will be a very hard part of it, I’m glad we have the sith and trash sling challenge to do over the next few months but I will revive the online challenge thread in the near future for our continuous improvements in ridiculous challenges.

Just as a teaser I’m thinking about a few that might need to be done at night

Unless it's vampire hunting with little oak spiked projectiles.  Way too dangerous.  :D

I think the biggest challenge of night slinging is getting good video of what you did... I am also intrigued though Mersa.

Omni-directional LEDs, taped to a battery (like maybe a 'C'). The only way to do it, in my opinion, nothing else would be bright enough. I've tried with glow-in-the-dark balls. Digital cameras can't pick them up. Even throwing in low light, movement gets really blurred because the shutter speed is so low.

Or.

You could light something on fire. That would work too.

Title: Re: Pumpkin Challenge! Vote for the winner
Post by Morphy on Nov 19th, 2020 at 9:24am
Is there no glow paint possible strong enough to work? I've actually been considering activating several glow sticks, breaking them open and mixing the liquid with glue. I know those tend to be pretty bright at least for a while. Though if it's just a thin film with glue that may not be enough.

for night time slinging - you can buy 'kits' for things called 'throwies'.
Basically a bunch of leds a bunch of batterias and some strong magents.
To make a throwie you simple sellotap the three components together and throw it at something metallic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAIxSm0v0Xs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psbt2JvjWg0

https://www.amazon.com/led-throwies/s?k=led+throwies

So what you do is embed the throiwe in clay or quick setting cement. Or simlt taope a couple to a clay missile that has the correct shaped void for the throwie.

Make the clay missile, then press the throwie into the side to create the right shape. let clay dry, tape throwies into void/shape.

If not using magnets - then you just need the 3volt batteries and 3 volt led's.

I like it but it’s not what I had in mind but the more I think about it it might be a good way to make the challenge easier to do , because at least knowing where your projectile ends up might make the challenge easier.

To be continued,

Back to voting people!!!

My slinging was terrible!  I cringe every time I watch my little chicken wing motions :)
Normally I would use Byzantine, but I was really nervous about using rocks (Much heavier than my normal tennis balls) in my backyard while distracted by filming too.  I am surrounded by things and people that I really don’t want to hit with rocks if a shot went off in an unexpected direction, so I stuck with an underhanded throw that I wasn’t really used to. My form ended up looking pretty bad!

I missed... so much... My slinging was rubbish.

You guys are far too hard on yourself. Pumpkins can be wily creatures. Very difficult to hit. Can’t wait to take part in this next year. If I have my way explosives and rubber chickens will feature heavily in the video. I mean...did you expect anything else?

Everyone did a great job, and I hope we continue to see increasing levels of involvement in these challenges. This was my first pumpkin challenge, and I should have tried it years ago!

@IG, this prize will be put to good use right away.  I’m sure it will make an appearance in future challenges too :)

My 6 year old thinks so too!  He is going to grow up thinking these things are perfectly normal.  That's just the way it is: After you carve the pumpkin... you're supposed to smash it to bits :)

It's definitely going to be a tradition in my household!

Awesome!  Once familiar with it, what do you think the setup and takedown times are for the target?

Title: Re: Pumpkin Challenge! Vote for the winner
Post by NooneOfConsequence on Dec 7th, 2020 at 9:59pm
5 mins is a pretty good estimate. It’s just like a standard 2-pole tent... in fact I am 95% sure that they made the target from a open-faced beach shade tent design with some small modifications.

Takedown is maybe 2 mins (edit... ok probably 5 mins to roll up and pack it back in the bag nicely), but you do need to sweep out the floor area before you pack it up.

Nice!

I hope it holds up. A similar one I had (see below) didn't have the target backstop and I punched some holes in it near the fiberglass poles pretty quickly.  Hopefully the backstop helps with that.
