I used to lurk around here back in the early 2000's in high school, back when I had more time to spend flinging rocks. 15 years later, I'm happy to see the forum is still around!
I used to live in Alabama, southwest end of the Cumberland Plateau, which has all sorts of interesting geology, including readily available river-smoothed stones, and the struggle of living on top of swamp in FL is real. I'm even considering buying a sack of landscaping pebbles from Home Depot, though Tennis Balls and a backstop are the right solution for backyard practice.
I used to have a small pile of braided leather or sinew slings (flat leather pouches), but after various moves they've been lost. Whipped this (attached photo) one up over the weekend (Dacron & leather, doubled 3-strand braid on the loop side, round 6-strand on the release) and made myself sore flinging gravel. It's nice to be back!
