Another really great idea! I've just thought of a really good way to make the ammo for it as well. How did you make yours? I love the simplicity.

Wow! That is really unique. It's novel, yet satisfyingly simple in equal measure.

maybe put a small yo yo at the end of a whip?  suicide by yo-yo or supersonic yo-yo? :P

Thank you Jauke for the concept, I think I'm on to something...
Please welcome my yo-yo sling design!

Eagerly awaiting videos guys!!

Super simple design

Any success and you could have a clay pigeon throwing design.

You throw the disks I’ll throw the stones . Great target practice.

Holy moly, that would be amazing! I wish slinging were more commonplace, there would be some awesome activities you could do if you had several people.

Imagine if you could do it yourself, get the dual rotor going (180 deg out of phase) and then left...right. That would take some coordination.

Dual wielding slings, what will they think of next? Well, give Jauke some time and we will find out.  :)

I have a place close to me that is a shotgun clay range, I’m going to try get there and sling some clays this year but with all 2020 is throwing at me so far I’m not holdin my breath.

As for dual wield slings , I’ll leave that to the ambidextrous folk, I can barely write my name left handed

I just threw 5 clay disks into the distance
My jaw dropped, they flew unlike anything I have thrown. I am more convinced that this is a possibly world distance record breaking sling design.

Give this a shot guys, buy some clay, make some disks, anyone can do this, this is super fun.

of course sidearm is the way to go here.

Simple enough to make a consistent mould for  yo-yo sling ammo.
Though I do love the stick rolling idea.

I've got a clear day today - let's see what we can do :-)

(20 seconds later)
Hmm, actually harder than thought - hinged mould isn't going to do it, which is a shame - or will it ?
Sliding roller is much easier, though the flattish shape could be an issue.

Okay I'll have soime lunch and fire up openscad this afternoon :-)

in case anyone wants to play around with a 3d model.
copy and paste everything in the 'Quote' box, into openscad and hit f5 to update after you've changed any of the variables :-)

'f5' gives you a quick render - 'f6' gives you a useable model you can export to a full 3d format. stl for 3d printing, and various others.
'f6' takes longer - sometimes, a lot longer :-)

Use your mouse in the display window to move things around. Mouse PLUS left button rotates, mouse plus Right button moves. scroll wheel zooms in and out (unless you have a mac, 'cos apple don't trust mac users with scroll wheels)

All numbers/measurements are in millimetres.

wd=10; // width disc
hd=60; // height disc
st=20; // spindle thickness
sg=4; // spindle gap
dt=10; // disc thickness

translate([0,(dt+sg)/2,0]) resize([hd,dt,hd]) sphere(d=10);
translate([0,-(dt+sg)/2,0]) resize([hd,dt,hd]) sphere(d=10);

translate([0,sg,0]) rotate([90,0,0]) cylinder(d=st,h=sg*2);
} // end mod

yoyo();

I wonder if a disc with two nubs for holding 2 strings (one top, one bottom) would work better than a single nub in the middle. I guess I'll also have to try printing some prototypes.

Great idea Jauke! I've always tried to think of a way to skip stones with a sling...I didn't realize the solution could be so simple.

Title: Re: Yo-yo Discus Sling

here's a version you can actually print:

Quote:
// yoyo generator
$fn=50;

wd=10; // width disc
hd=60; // height disc
st=20; // spindle thickness
sg=3; // spindle gap
dt=10; // disc thickness

module yoyo(){

translate([0,(dt+sg)/2,0]) resize([hd,dt,hd]) sphere(d=10);
translate([0,-(dt+sg)/2,0]) resize([hd,dt,hd]) sphere(d=10);

translate([0,sg,0]) rotate([90,0,0]) cylinder(d=st,h=sg*2);
} // end mod

module printable(){
difference (){
yoyo();
translate([0,0,hd/2]) cube([hd+10,hd+10,10],center=true);
translate([0,0,-hd/2]) cube([hd+10,hd+10,10],center=true);
} // end diff

} // end mod

//yoyo();
printable();

Looks like a tie fighter :-)
Won't need supports, it's just got to bridge 3mm gap (in the script above anyway).
Just started one :-)

I could make the cutoff's a l;ot smaller - but this way there won't be any issues printing one.

The nubs either side would not work as well.
they would increase air resistance for one and you would lose all the rotation you gain from it running along the cord.

On the other hand it would throw from a standard split pouch sling.
But the nubs would probably also stop it skipping.

Not at all surprised that you designed that... I am a little surprised by how fast you made it though.

Some of my clay projectiles didn't make it far though, they just snapped in halve. These had the inside cillender made too small. Sun dried clay isn't so strong. Others thought it would be more fun to fly vertical

I've had exactly the same problem, and I think it's because the cord pulls on the sides causing them to break. I imagine that wouldn't be an issue though If they were fired. The clay 'discus' shaped projectiles in the Y sling look much more promising though, and I think that is the best route to take. I've found they are actually easier and quicker to make than traditional glandes as well.

It would be interesting to see if you could get any flight benefit from a Frisbee shape? I made a quick model of what I'm thinking could fly a far distance if made out of metal.

Currently the Frisbee part is 6in in diameter and is about 4.6 cubic inches and the ball end is 3in in diameter and 2.3ish cubic inches. I imagine the mass would need to be equal about the stem so a different metal for top and bottom?

The groves promote spin as well as being concave so rope or a flat web would have more contact.

Let me know if the image works, I dont post often :)

that would probably fly in a circle if it flew.

interesting to try though - can you export it as an .stl ?
It would print pretty easily.

But shrunk down for slinging.

Balancing it on a cord would be 'interesting' - though I suspect 'frustrating' is a better word :-)

Curious Aardvark, I think the issue of balancing on the string part would go away if I could work the moments out to be equal on the center of the stem. Either a different mass material for either side or a new geometry... doesn't mean it won't just tumble out like you said.

Its a rhino file right now but I could definitely convert and send it as an .stl if I can figure that out, would be cool to see someone try it (Update: wont let me post the .stl file :( )

did the golfball fly straight ?

Longest throw i ever saw, was a golfball at the golfclub in powell, wyoming.

Larry bray put one over the fence at the end of the driving range - and it was still rising at that point. we have no idea how far it actually went.

BUT !
I personally have never been able to throw a golfball straight :-)
The spin makes them curve. I can put a right angle bend in a golfball flight. but long distance and straight - damn near impossible lol

So if your's flew straight, it either didn't spin, you managed an overhand throw or the groove totally messed up the aerodynamic effect of the dimples.

Interesting.

hang on I'll add stls to the allowed file list..
right try that :-)

Was thinking you could change the toothed section to a 2 mm groove - not too deep or it won't print. But then i thought - I've got a bunch of 6mm toothed 3d printer belt - maybe make a sling from that. Hell I can even print my own toothed belts.
Did that for the rotary axis I made for my laser cutter

Anyway hopefully stl's will post now :-)

90s were sold to these  V V (Yo-Bee) (top).

What about the metal ones? How did they fly?
Have you tried the golf ball and or metal ones without flat back and top?

I have collected a lot of metal discs. But since the 80s, I haven’t thrown them. When I then threw them, they flew in a spiral/corkscrew.

Interesting topic and some great posts.  I am always looking for distance ideas, especially golf balls.

Members who are not familiar w/ modern yo-yo's may want to Google "4a yoyo."  This refers to off-string yo-yos.  Not that you would ever want to sling one of these, but there may be some technical ideas that can be used in pursuing this idea.
