Experiment by David Sim, here (journal of the South Shields society, devoted to experimental archaeology of Roman army)
http://arbsoc.org.uk/arbeia-journal/4588598107 p. 64, with some experimental data and some thoughts on why firing clay shot is a good idea EDIT: the journal issue is volume 6-7 of 1997-8 (2001). Apologies for omission !! I thought I was linking more precisely |

Some interesting things in those journals, thanks for sharing.
I have experimented with fired clay projectiles and I can attest that they can become very hard if the right clay and temper material is used. Once fired, clay projectiles can certainly have a lot of benefits over even river rounded stones. + you can make them buzz/whistle! |

The thing is most clay would have been made and dried in a fire or a fires embers overnight.
So it would all have ben fired to one extent or another. Christian and uwe have been using fired glandes in the ompetitions for a few years. Unless it hits the metal diana they don't break, just bounce off the wood. |
