Title: The sling in Madagascar
Post by Samuel on Jan 28th, 2020 at 3:31am
Hi there,

On the map from this link http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1496268907 we can see a point all the way down in the island of Madagascar.
Last summer I was there on holidays and I (of course) brought a sling with me. I slung three or four times (until a sharp stone cut my release cord and the sling went flying to the centre of a sacred lake. I see it as an offering to the local spirits  ::)) and every time I did it people approached me saying “pilotra” (one of the words for sling in Malagasy) and talk to me about a tribe in the southern part of the island which are very renowned for their slinging.
Well, I would say that everybody in Madagascar knows about slings and, for example, a guy around forty told me that when he was young they use to sling to birds in the countryside. He slung with me for a bit.

So, just a bit of first-hand experience from a place not very well known. Hope you’ll find it of some interest. Unfortunately, I couldn’t visit the tribe in the south.

That's really interesting. It's a shame so much knowledge has been lost, is being lost or is just ignored and unreported to the wider world. So many tips and tricks that just have to be worked out through experience.

several years ago my father in law brought a sling from south of Madagascar. He had bought it there from a local slinger who showed him how to use it. It was made of one piece of thick cow skin (but not raw hide) with a split pouch and an over all length of about one meter.

It seems like a ribbon of leather seen in a post but I don't remember this post.

I think he was between 35 and 40 years old.
And I would say that he used a kind of helicopter with underarm or sidearm release, not sure. Anyway, it was in the northern tip of the country and apparently the real sling "pros" are the tribes from the south, so they may use a diferent style.
