Title: Puukko knife Post by Kick on Jun 16th, 2019 at 4:00am
I recently graduated as a nurse (start my first proper nursing job on Monday :D) and I got some graduation presents from family and friends which I was really not expecting (and I'm sure I don't deserve). One of those presents was this knife, an incredibly beautiful Finnish puukko. I've seen a lot of these knives being sold as tourist gifts to look pretty in their leather sheaths hung up on the wall. That is not this. This is a real knife and I can see this being on my belt for the rest of my life. I want to be buried with this knife it's so pretty.

Nice! Looks like a comfy knife to use, birch handle?

Very comfortable. Hadn't had the chance to use it yet but it feels like it was made for my hand. I believe it's birch. I know almost nothing about the specifics of different types of wood but I think it might be burl wood. It has that look to it anyway.

Blade is about 8.5cm and 2cm at the handle. Full length is 20cm. I really can't express how comfortable it is to hold. I also got a whet stone with it. I actually just finished off something pretty cool that will help make transporting the whet stone easier but pictures will have to go up tomorrow.

I used nålbinding, Broden stitch, to make the pouch then used the finger braiding technique Jaegoor shared a little while ago to make the cord. I really like that braiding technique by the way. Easy to pick up and makes for a nice cord. I still need to work on it being even and neat but this came out pretty good. I chose Broden stitch specifically because it makes for a thick material so it's nice and padded. I tried it out on my belt next to the knife and it just bounces around no problem. Completely cushioned so both the stone and the knife sheath are protected. I also really love the combination of the three shades of grey. I've used them a lot and I always think it looks cool.
Here is the Broden stitch tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbldmMWdwwM&t=573s Here is the finger braiding technique. It's in German but it's easy to follow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVz-VXY3Rmw&app=desktop |

Looks nice! The graduated grey really does work well, clashes a bit with the pants [smiley=shocked.gif]
Thanks for the links! I will have to go get some new cordage and start trying some things with them. |

I still haven't had much to use it with (soon to change but I'll elaborate in it's own post eventually) but I did try it with shaping a wooden needle and it's a dream to use. I really can't wait to use it on my next project.
