I want to come to this one so badly and I really thought I would be able to but I have practical trainings now over the time which I can't miss or I won't graduate... I'm so close then I shall finally be free!

Hi,
Two questions for forum.
First, are there any irish boys or girls thinking of going?
Do the rules still require more than three rotations before release?
I am a one rotation underarm slinger, would my technique be allowed?
An old shoulder injury limits mobility.

Post by Curious Aardvark on Jan 6th, 2019 at 8:02am
sling any style you like.
the rules have never really been observed. They state you have to make 2 rotations overhead. The majority of the slingers don't use an overhead technique. The classis balearic is actually a waist level and behind your back windup - not helicopter.
To be fair nobody really knows why the rules exist. Pep (bsf cheffe, doesn't see any point in them either - I have had that conversation)

Yes there should be some irish guys coming this year - shimmy (kristopher kennedy - think that's how it's spelt), is going to bring a few.
He works for fokai in ireland, so is technically an honorary chamorro :-)
But he's definitely bringing at least a couple from ireland - as far as I know.

Drop him a line.

Hi CA. Thanks for reply.
Another Question if i may.
What are the target distances, i usually practise at about 36 to 40 metres?
That facebook page link does not seem to work?
Cheers

works for me
just google fokai and the grasshopper lounge.

distances:
men and teams: 20 metres
women and kids: 10 metres

teams can have women and kids.

20m looks really short when you're up there.
But bear in mind you're not on your own at your familiar practice range.
You're out in the public with people shouting and cheering and other slingers throwing to either side of you.
Nerves play a fairly important part :-)

it works out quite pricey this year.
100 euros for a return ferry ticket over a few miles of water seems a bit steep to me.
But then I haven't taken a ferry anywhere for at least 20 years - so what do i know :-)

I'll be going 0 not sure where the money's coming from yet though :noidea:

Whereabouts is the competition in Mallorca and what do people do getting there from the airport?

Title: Re: 6th International Slinging Convention
Post by Curious Aardvark on Jan 16th, 2019 at 7:01am
now that's always fun :-)

On a good year pep will have booked hotel rooms and you take a taxi from the airport to the hotel and the desk clerk has your name on a list and you go to your room. (stop laughing david)
Last year was more fun.

david, silvio and I did an extra couple of days. when it came time to go to the official hotel, pep changed it.
so we went to one hotel in arenal to be told it was tho one across town. We dutifully trundled our suitcases across town - to be told that pep had changed it back to the original hotel - while we were in transit.
At which point we stayed where we were that night and got them to pick us up in the bus the following morning.

Now pep is  a last minute kind of guy. It's not unheard of for him to send the hotel details while you are on the plane to mallorca - in fact that's fairly standard.

But theoretically - contact pep and tell him you're going and he will send you the hotel details.  :D ;D
It's never happened like that yet - but we live in hope :-)

No clue where the comps and meals will be - you have to wait for the official schedule - which i believe we got on the bus last year.

If you plan on turning up mid-week, let someone know and we'll tell you where we are, hotel rooms are never an issue :-)
If you're lucky someone will pick you up from the airport - if not, it's a taxi job - bring cash !
The swiss guys did that last year, just appeared mid competition.

@funda iacunda - is that you jorn ?
we missed you last year :-)
silvio had no official translater ;-)

well that's my flights booked.
going out on the 22nd feb and back on the 4th.
I can fly direct from birmingham (20 minutes drive away) and just about the only airport we can do a dropoff for free (well technically you get dropped off at the train station and take the maglev to the airport - but it's still free !)

£145 with a cheapo insurance policy and 22kg luggage.
Might take some clay with me this year.

Now i just need to find some money for the hotels !

Are the hotels always (relatively) nearby to Parma airport then?

I just don't fancy getting stuck with a massive taxi bill tis all.

Title: Re: 6th International Slinging Convention
Post by Curious Aardvark on Jan 17th, 2019 at 1:18pm
taxi bill is pretty much always the same - no matter where your hotel is. Always around 20 euros.
If it's a nearer hotel they seem to conjure random extras from thin air.
They don't seem to expect a tip - last year we got to arenal and the clock read 13 euros. Then it just racked up extras till it hit 20.
The farther you go the less extras they seem to add.
I have NEVER worked out the pricing system. I suspect it's a topic for the 'here be maths' section of the forum

We've been at the far end of palma harbour and pretty close to the airport in arenal - both taxi trips were the same price.
There are also busses at the airport - never taken one, but presumably they take you where you need to go.

Dependng on when you fly in, there might be other slingers around going to the same hotel.
When you land, hang a sling round your neck and if there's anyone around they'll spot you and say hello :-)  (or 'hola' or 'guten tag')

Unless you're flying out at an ungodly hour of the night the bus will usually drop you at the airport for the flight home. One reason it's best to fly back on the monday - as we all get dropped at the airpoirt en masse :-)

Depending on where we'll be based there is usually a hotel for the first night until the bus in the morning. Sometimes we're based along the harbour, sometimes we're further inland.

Best hotel we had was in ses salinas - cracking place, great food !
Whereas last year we were in a real shithole with awful food.
But we did find a superb restaurant very nearby.

Post by JudoP on Jan 17th, 2019 at 1:41pm
Ah yeah 20 euros is absolutely fine.

I'm just checking that I can get the 28th off as I might have to be doing some workshops in the day, but if not I'll come  on the day after and planning to fly back on the Monday.

It sounds so good. I'm making a new balearic sling specifically for this, never quite perfected the design but hopefully this will be the best yet.

Post by Curious Aardvark on Jan 18th, 2019 at 7:20am
if you let pep know when you're arriving he should be able to arrange a pick up. We'll be back on mallorca then (probably).

also have a word with david - you might end up on the same plane as he's flying from manchester (probably - I think he flew from liverpool last year) on the same day.
Can't miss him. He's the really tall guy who looks like gandalf, wearing a lemmy cowboy hat - sat at the bar with a beer :-)

Only way to contact him is: david colter on facebook.

Weirdly, last year, our flights landed within 10 minutes of each other.

well just had chat with pep, we're back in the hotel amic horizonte this year.
Advantages:
Short walk from porto pi shopping centre :thumb:
Decent food :thumb:
Decent rooms :thumb:
Good showers - unlike last years hotel.
The tap water is good to drink - this is not so at all mallorca hotels.
Nice lounge
Reasonably priced beer
Fairly near airport - not that that makes any difference to taxi fares.
Reasonable wifi - I'll be able to watch the rugby over the weekend :-)

Disadvantages:
The coffee can best be described as brown and warm.
You have to pay for table water at the evening meal - David you owe just about everybody for table water, ya mooching scrounger  !
Bed bugs :-(

But I have my big spray bottle of bed bug killer spray.

So I'm good to go :-)

Once I've done mine - it'll be 10 euros a room ;-)

I'll do the bedside furniture and mattress when i arrive.
Might not need it, but better safe than chewed to bits like last time !

Nope last year you did not come.
We went there yesterday, the slinging area is cordoned off with electric fencing and has donkeys in it.
Also for the first time in 5 years, we actually went round the museum. Some great stuff, I will post lots of pucs when I get back.
To whet your appetites, here's a sunset in ibiva.

Also, it's cold on the beachhead, doubly so if you come from Guam :-)

Currently at training ground in Ibiza, went to stone beach this morning for play and collecting ammo.
Come to conclusion that my slings and fig 8, while perfect for tennis balls - sucks for stones.

So changed to a Shepherd sling, I think judop made. I'll ask him Thursday. So new sling, new way of holding it and byzantine style and throwing harder.
After practically no slinging between the last international and this, due to buggered thigh - all I'm looking at this year is not to blank. :-)

Got trophy yesterday for being third foreigner out of three. Pep didn't want me to have it without points so I went back and kept throwing till I hit something. Was a Diana as it happens.

Sometimes just showing up is enough :-)

Also got ancient lead glande and coin from Marcos. Great family !

If it's black and brown jute it will be- I hope it serves you well!

I'm in a race against time to build a new sling before I head down... Got a decent-ish balearic one now, but it's a bit loose on the braid (this seems to always happen when I do it wet) and the pouch splits are a little thin for my liking.

A nice short shepherd sling will do me well if I can get it done!

Post by Curious Aardvark on Feb 25th, 2019 at 5:24pm
Could be black and brown, I tend not to register colours much :-)

Given that the rocks you'll end with will be fairly random, you really need a pouch.
Had to trim the fluffy tail, was buggering up the release, but still almost makes a snap.

Lol as of last night pep had no clue he or when he was getting here himself.
I'm currently sitting in the hotel lobby , enjoying having a free day and just chilling out waiting for people to arrive. I'll amble down to town at some point, for a coffee and to replenish supplies.
Other than that - no plans.

Tomorrow we have a competition that is just teams. I'm team Guam, got the T-shirt and everything. Plus the boys really on form.
Saturday it's the international and Sunday a comp with tennis balls. My only real chance of doing anything.

Well that's another year of slinging, talking, braiding, being talked at in spanish: by people you know can speak english and probably german - though we still have only the one ukranian speaker.

Sun, beer, sea, beaches, stones, slinging, more beer, early mornings, extremely long lunches and just good times had by all.

While I did bring back a small trophy and a first place medal - neither one were really earned, and personally I feel my best achievement this year was to increase my personal best with stones to 10 points, and that with blanking my third round.
I was 1 point off 3rd and 2 off 2nd and 1st in the international.

Shoutouts go to pep ribas ribas - for once more being the butt of all our winges and complaints.
Yeah he tends to do things last second, but at the end of the day it's a tough job and he manages to pull it off each year. He also makes a pretty decent sandwich :-)
So here's to Pep, without you it would probably never happen.
Yes we complain, yes it appears we don't appreciate your efforts - but at the end of the day, without you none of it would happen at all.
So many many thanks from all of us (and I know i speak for everyone on this).

Also major shout outs to: Adrien - the crazsy dutchman - Van Diemen and his feisty fiat panda. A better tour guide to ibiza we couldn't have had :-)
If anyone tells you that four large blokes, and a boot/trunk full of rocks, can't drive up a rough mountain track in a fiat panda - they don't know what they are talking about.
Jeeps and landrovers have nothing on a fiat panda driven by a mad dutchman :-)

To Marcos, Sonia and little Marc - great people, fabulous hosts and the epitomy of what makes the international such a fantastic event.
A true slinging family.

Also a major shout to christian sam - who gave the very first lecture where:
a) I actually learnt some new things about slinging.
b) He conducted it in three languages, so everyone actually understood what was going on.
The man is a legend in his own lunchtime :-)

To everyone else that helped behind the scenes a huge thank you !

The 2019 international leaves us with a huge amount of unique memories and experiences that we will treasure forever.

I apologise for the german and spanish - but google translate still does a better job than I could.

Thank you for the kind words Alex! I am glad you liked the lecture! compiling and and afterwards reducing the stuff was more work than I had anticipated...

lol yeah but then you don't expect the university to supply you with a laptop and projector that are not compatible.

You pulled it off and nobody went to the pub :thumb:

I'd still like copies of the 'slides' :-)
