Post one song that defines your mood at the moment of posting.
You can post as many times as you like but just one song at a time for brevity's sake please. I and I'm sure others would like to try and listen to some new music that people post and if you post a Best of: Anthology that might be a bit more than we could do! Thanks! ;) Here's where I'm at; classic tune. https://youtu.be/RbmS3tQJ7Os |

I think the line: 'I'm here and now, but to them I'm far away'. Kind of sums me up :-) That dakoda motors cacophony, was just awful. If I felt like that, I suspect I'd be on a suicide watch ! Right got to go move some clients into new offices and make sure all their it kit still works. |

@CA: Ha! With a baby, a toddler, a side business, and a day job to juggle, I think “where did it go?” Is a good description of my brain on some days, and accomplishing anything is like attempting to sing along with that song... I’m going way too fast and have no idea what’s going on! That’s especially true on those days where I was up at 3am changing diapers. Plus the song is so shockingly stupid that it makes me laugh every time I hear it... but that’s probably also the sleep deprivation :)

I listened to a few more songs from them to try to place it. Still can't. ;D @Mersa- I totally get it bro. Lol. Good times. |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by NooneOfConsequence on Jun 25th, 2018 at 11:58am
@Morphy: DMC is normally classified as “punk” or indie punk or surfer punk (but not “surf” like Dick Dale), but they are hard to pin down with the strange mix of 50’s rock undertones, indie acoustics, and punk. There was a drastic shift from the first to the second album too. I really like the first album personally, but it gets much more confusing if you don’t keep the albums separate, because it’s basically a completely different band after that.
If you’re trying to figure me out based on my choice of music, you should know that I don’t take myself too seriously most of the time. |

Oooo talking of good new music but in relation to old music, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats is a good one to check out if you like anything close to Sabbath. Their album The Night Creeper is really good. They recorded it using original 70's equipment and it's just... heavy. It really feels like the Manson and suicide cults side of the 70's. The acid trips of the 60's are going sour and everything is a bit... menacing. Great stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mbwk228vtkg |

This is my baseline..well sort of. Any music that has that trippy, ethereal quality to it is right up my alley. Doesn't have to be as depressing as this one, but anything with that feel. Sarosh's song from the anime show was sort of edging in that direction. Other examples like Speak to me/breathe from Pink Floyd, alot of new waveish synth music like Depeche Mode, and Muse all sort of fit in. If you know any bands like that KTO I would love to check them out. |

I think I know something you might like Morphy that's maybe a bit similar to Soma.
https://youtu.be/jih29bmwOSY Melvins are my favourite band and I firmly believe everyone on the planet can find at least one song they like of theirs. They've covered so many different styles, it's impossible to not like something. The song above is a little... dark. It's kind of a happy little tune with super dark lyrics that then goes very psychadelic... "I cut the throat of a billy goat and let it bleed, His frozen eyes were far more than I, It's kind of nice, To know the things that make me happy, Just realize, Keep the dog away from me..." So pretty dark... |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by kicktheotter on Jun 29th, 2018 at 3:28pm
This song is quite possibly my favourite song ever. It's certainly the best cover of a song ever produced. The original version is the theme tune to the old 70's British sitcom Are You Being Served?, a thoroughly camp silly comedy set in a department store.
Coil covered the theme and... transformed it. They took a comedy shows opening theme listing the floors of a department store and elevated it to this hauntingly beautiful, angelic piece. The juxtaposition of this stupid theme tune with their treatment of it and the fact one of Coil's members, Johnn Balance, died before it was released, is just... incredible. It's absurd and wonderful and sad and... the lyrics are just listing shopping departments but sounds like the choir announcing your arrival in heaven. I love it. I'm going to have it at my funeral. It's funny, despite having sported a mohawk for 2 years now I'm not actually all that knowledgeable on punk. People always ask me if I like punk and technically I do but I haven't actually listened to very much of it. My dad was an original punk back in the day (Once he came home with two coloured squares in bleach blonde hair, one pink square and one blue. I'm told my grandmother was not impressed...) but his tastes changed so I didn't really grow up listening to punk. I've sort of come to punk late (really late) but I really wish punk would have a proper revival. The political and social climate is there, now we just need the energy :D

Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by Morphy on Aug 13th, 2018 at 8:20am
While I'm not a huge fan of punk I've always appreciated that style of music. The mindset of putting political and social grievance into rock makes sense to me. Weirdly enough I admire the movement but don't really care for the music which is the central part of it.
If it did have a revival what direction do you think it would be in? Brexit maybe? I don't know much about what's going on over there. |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by kicktheotter on Aug 13th, 2018 at 9:04am
There are some that argue Mozart was a punk because in a lot of ways he embodied it's spirit as going against the popular grain at the time. I mean he now has an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to his love of scatological humour.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozart_and_scatology That's pretty punk. It's definitely more a state of mind for me and in that way the music isn't so much the main point of it. I think if Britain had a punk revival it would be almost exactly the same topics for the songs as it was the first time round. The current Tories idolise Thatcher and seem pretty committed to continuing her ideas. The rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer, inequality, homelessness, unemployment, classism. The recent trend of looking back to the 80s for politics, fashion and media (Stranger Things anyone?) has been very strong and I'm kind of surprised the music hasn't come back with it. Like I said, it's the perfect breeding ground for punk right now. Politicians are feeling more remote than ever despite social media and there is a sort of hopelessness creeping in generally in a lot of areas of society which will either lead to people completely giving up or getting really pissed off. Judging by how common protests and counter protests are getting, it should be only a matter of time until Johnny Rotten 2.0 pops up. |

@Sarosh I know I’m a bit late but, Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorites. I have a bunch of it’s soundtrack on my personal playlist. It’s in a battle for first place with the first anime I watched, which is mostly so high because of the nostalgia factor. I also saw champloo, it’s also a favorite but not quite as high I’d say.

My daughter has seen it 3-4 times already and loves it. If you guys know of a good next step for a 9 year old girl (9 going on 16 if you know what I mean) please feel free to submit something. @Drakolith
what's the first you watched? I have seen some but i can't compare them with each other they just stir up different emotions. fma brotherhood was the first i completed. and one piece was the first i started. @Morphy for that age i would recommend avatar the last airbender and legend of korra . the only anime i can think of with female main characters are: "mary the virgin witch" , "made in abyss". both not for 9 year olds. cowboy bebop and samurai champloo have very good music. for other anime it could be that the anime makes the music good when you connect it with certain emotions. i wonder what others might suggest. |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by kicktheotter on Aug 25th, 2018 at 10:06am
The only anime I've watched is Death Note. Not really suitable for a 9 year old I guess but so clever and intricate and it's interesting in that the main character is the definition of an anti-hero. Very philosophical at points and truly one of my favourite series. I think everyone should watch it just to consider the questions it throws up.

Thank you for the advice there Sarosh. I'll check them out. I've heard great things about The Last Airbender, maybe that would be a good start.
KTO, I watched the Death note live action movie on Netflix. The idea behind it is really interesting. I am a big fan of anything with Willem Dafoe so figured it was worth a watch. I liked it a lot. Have you seen it? I suspect like most such movies the remake is not as good as the original but still quite good to me anyways. Also I watched some of the stuff you posted and although I don't know that genre well it sort of/kind of reminded me of Nine Inch Nails. You ever get into Reznors stuff? I was a teenager when Quake 1 was first coming out and he did the soundtrack for it. He did a phenomenal job on it. Of course I loved that game so much there may be just a little bit of nostalgia involved in my opinion. ;) https://youtu.be/qVOHTGYoM6E Here it is if you're interested. |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by kicktheotter on Aug 25th, 2018 at 6:56pm
I haven't seen the Netflix movie but of what I did see... Yeah you should watch the actual series :D
I would describe Author & Punisher as "Industrial Doom metal". NIN is pretty close really but I've never really got into them. I kind of like the bands that inspired Reznor more than the stuff Reznor has done (Coil and Throbbing Gristle). I find NIN a bit too... this is going to sound weird but a bit too pop music. I feel like NIN is Industrial music with some of the edges shaved off. Stuff like Throbbing Gristle is far more "raw". The Quake soundtrack is great and reminds me of the latest Doom incarnation's soundtrack which I've been greatly enjoying. Doom's is a bit more fast paced and closer to more traditional metal but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some inspiration taken from Quake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm932Sqwf5E |

I like music that evokes emotion and think the primary objective of music should be to do that. I can find music in pretty much every genre that I like just because in every genre at least one person or group is going to be using that style to evoke emotion in an effective way. Take my opinion with a pinch of salt though because I also believe music doesn't have to sound pleasant to be good which a lot of people disagree with :D One of my favourite songs is Discipline by Throbbing Gristle.

I don't listen to rap or metal or most mainstream music. Although if the tune of mainstream music is good I might listen to a piano cover of it. I like simple instrumental songs. Acoustic guitar is another instrument I really like.

They've been saying rock is dead for decades but now I suspect rock may really be dead. Hip Hop has taken over and I'm sorry to people who like hip hop and rap, I really am, but I cannot get into that music. It makes me cringe. Whenever I hear hip hop I put my head phones on with a repeating loop of nails on a chalk board for some relief.
Rock, especially classic rock is the soundtrack of my life. All my best times have been accompanied by bands such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones etc. Muse is another more modern band that has attained instaclassic status, despite a most unfortunate association with a certain movie saga that shall not be named. |

Rock isn't dead. These days, the internet lets anyone listen to anything at any time. I think the days of chart toppers is dead because every genre has split up and fractured into a million sub-genres and everyone can find the exact music they like without compromising and creating a mainstream hit, but that stopgap means every genre is represented by someone, somewhere. It can be harder to find them but they're out there.

I wouldnt say rock is dead, i still know lots of people who like rock like me, there just isnt really any new bands if that is what you mean, although i believe thats actually due more to the fact a lot of the older popular bands are still around rather than people not liking it. My favorite, ACDC.

Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by Morphy on Jun 14th, 2019 at 11:04am
When I say rock may be dead it has more to do with it no longer being the "gravitational force" around which the youth culture is focused. It may be different in Europe ( I hope!) But here in the States Hip Hop has pretty much taken over. There is a form of popish rock but eh... it has no soul. Yes there's still rock stations putting out new tunes but among the youth it's more and more rare to find ones that know good rock n roll. Once you lose the youth you essentially have a genre that's going the way of blues and jazz.
When I was a teen, damn that makes me sound ancient, but it was the opposite. It was all new types or genres of rock and on the side a growing group of hip hop/rap. Now, at best it's the opposite though you could even make the case it's dominant hip hop/rap and an ever shrinking group of rock. Based on what I've seen I think Europe is different. Britain has always been the hub of good music (with a few exceptions) You guys have to carry the torch haha. I hope. |

Many people liked their new sound. |

Right now I’m in the midst of a pretty hardcore rebellion against all things modern music. Since I wasn’t a fan of them when they were relevant I probably don’t have such strong feelings about any changes they had during their groups existence. One thing I will say about Michael McDonald is although his voice and style may be radically different than they were early on, I personally think the guy has one of the best, smoothest voices I’ve ever heard. Don’t get me wrong I love songs like Black Water with Patrick Simmons but then again I love Michael McDonalds songs as well. I guess I get the best of both world as an outsider. One of the perks maybe. |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by Curious Aardvark on Jul 25th, 2020 at 10:55am
rock and metal were NEVER about fashion.
As prevalent now as always and just as many new bands around, some really good. 'pop' music changes and attracts people who like to hang with crowds of like minded people (a bit like politics really). But rock and metal rumble ever onwards, not giving a poopy if it's fashionable or not. And yes I've been a head banger since I was about 10 and first heard tommy vance presenting the friday rock show on the radio. One of the fastest growing radio stations in the uk is Planet Rock. If anything it's a little too backwards looking. My current favourite band is a finnish metal group called Battle Beast. To my knowlege they've never been played on planet rock. Despite headlining one of the days at bloodstock in 2017. I saw them in birmingham in november last year. The energy Noora brings to the stage is just phenomenal. But the english music scene has ever been seriously biased. I saw Manowar live 4 times. Only 2 in england, as in the late 80's the english rock journalists decided they did not 'fit in'. And manowar stopped coming. Joey demaio was always a bit petulant and took himself way too seriously. So 2 concerts in england and 1 in canada and one in denmark. What I'm basically saying is that despite the media and popular culture - rock is as prevalent in soceity as always and concentrates on the live music scene a lot more than the pop chart acts do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o16Y2I7x8M&t=2716s |

Last week we went and saw Mad Max Fury Road in IMAX and it was akin to a religious experience. One of my favourite films easily. One big reason for it being so great is the soundtrack. Listening to it just makes you want to jump in the back of a souped-up hunk of scrap, fill it up with guzzoline and nitro and burn across the desert at blistering speed. Somehow Junkie XL managed to condense pure adrenaline down into audible wavelengths. Seeing The Doof Warrior rip into a guitar flamethrower on the back of a missile transport loaded up with amps... Incredible. A masterpiece of cinema.

I've got three!
I got done with work this evening. Went out and did some bow shooting. Then sat down on the porch with a cigar, a handful of beers, and the music playing. Nothing new, just a bunch of the same tunes I've listened to for years. These are three songs (there are others, just picking a few) that don't seem to get old for me. Every time I hear them, I think I like them more. Some of you might know how much I like synth and funk. Its the main reason I love 70s and 80s music so much. Well, enter Chromeo. I just love some of their songs. Its like a band from the late 70s/ early 80s came to present day and started making music with some of the newer tech we have with no self-awareness that they sound about 40 years old. Anyways, without further ado.
https://youtu.be/LlZiMfJh-As -(seriously channeling some Prince on this one.) https://youtu.be/6XCcWlgVqHA Man this one screams 80s. The synth and cheesy lyrics are so 80s. https://youtu.be/YLtJs4jLa54 |

I find it interesting what bands make it in which countries.
An american band called black stone cherry are much bigger in the uk then the us. Heard an interview woith them and bands they tour with as suppoort in the states, Will get shifted to support for them in the uk. Thunder have been around for over 30 years. My all time thunder track, because it;s just true and the english like nothing more than to take the piss out of themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbiUAC2PZA0 That's probably from their breakthrougyh album: backstreet synphony. My favourite thunder album, though would have to be Laughing On Judgement day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn2Z6fCDdAU&list=PLJl9yukCZhzTdFisl0ZPHuKjQEY794Arf What I've had in the backgriund last couple of days is (genuinely) an italian all female deep purple tribute band called: Strange Kind Of Women. This is a full headline concert with pretty good sound and proper video. The crowd suck - probably the least vocal crowd I've ever not heard at a live gig. maybe it's an eyetalian thing. We trdn to shout ourselves hoarse in the uk :-) As deep purple tribute bands go - they're right up there, with their own twist. The singer is superb, but definitely has problems with some of the lyrics. You'll be singing along with one of the songs and realise that she's just making her own words up. Adds to the experience. I'm sure Ian gillan did the same on occasion  Plus they're not glammed up - it's all about the music. We have a local venue that often books cover bands, SKOW haven't turned up there yet. But if they do I'm going :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v68tfDP5ETQ |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by Curious Aardvark on Sep 3rd, 2021 at 5:02pm
I've started to listen to live concerts in the background, so to carry on the thread - here's a pretty decent short show by thunder.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwrInX_1M6s Now this one is my favourite finnish band, and while the sound is terrible and the video isn't universally great - it's one of those concerts you really really wish you'd been at. The energy both on and off the stage is just off the scale ! This is battle Beast: live in st petersburg. When a fnnish band play a gig in russia, they talk to the audience in english, makes me all warm and fuzzy. When people ask me what the british empire ever did for the world - international communications ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evecOrKjpOs And if youre wondering about bhow the lead guitarist doesn't really fit, it's because he's a last minute stand in. The original lead guitar and band founder member had gone off in a huff and quit the band just before the tour. So part of what makes this concert so good is that the rest of the band were really finding their freedom and enhjoying things more than they had for a while. |

I hate mornings with a passion only someone who doesn't drink and wakes up feeling like they've got a hangover - every sodding day - can.
But I love this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhnBsbHyprw&t=205s And while we're on feel good southern rock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW6q8_kV1Nc It's a classic southern rock combination of fast, upbeat music with actually, fairly downbeat lyrics. yet it works :-) Pretty good sound for a bunch of old fat hairy guys  lol actually I think it's the video format on my computer that makes them all loook wider than they are tall. It's a square image beigng stretched out. I have done them a disservice ! There's aan episode of the canadian comedy show: kids in the hall. Where one of the cast keeps running into bloke a lot taller, fatter, bald and with glasses. And the running gag is that people can't tell them apart. At the end of the show in exaperation he shouts: 'what's worng with you people, I look nothing like him. I'm not that old, I'm not bald or fat and I don't wear glases !' To which evrybody else replies: 'NOT YET !' It's one of those universal truths that sticks with you lol |

Geez making me feel old man. I remember what that album did to the rock scene. Overnight killed big hair, glam rock. Like killed it dead just immediately it seemed like. Sure they might have held over on the radio for a bit but as far as the kids during that time it was done. Ive gone through phases with grunge. Loved it, indifferent, hated it and now back to enjoying it for what its worth. It also helps that it was the major music of my teens so theres a lot of nostalgia. One thing I find sort of sad is what has happened to music in the last 10-15 years. In the past each decade had a really distinctive sound. The 60s were the 60s, the 70s had a unique vibe, the 80s were weird and awesome and the 90s was completely different. But over the last 15 years I feel like music has just stagnated. Its either hip hop that sounds similar to hip hop from 7 years ago or its a weird conglomeration of pop with any other genre. Wheres the really new sounds on the radio? Wheres the Nirvanas or the Bee Gees or the Depeche Modes where all the sudden the sound just shifts as various bands change the entire orbit of music for awhile. Garbage I say!! You youngsters dont know how it was in the good old days!! *bangs cane on floor* |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by Curious Aardvark on Sep 26th, 2021 at 12:57pm
Ah well if you weren't a flibberty gibbet, flitting from one musical genre to another as fashion takes it's course, you'd realise that the underlying bedrock of music just keeps rolling on.
The fly by night fashionistas of the pop world are mere ticks and fleas on the back of the mastiff of rock and roll. The rock scene has never faltered and is healthier now than it's ever been. grunge distracted those easily swayed, for a short while. But it's lack of variety, and just piss poor singers, soon caused it too peter out like the damp fuse it had always been. Meanwhile pop music keeps turning up the odd gem among the paste. Adele and and the ginger ninja(as a likewise ginger person I can say that): ed sheeran have really taken the last decade or so by storm. There's a few bands that have also made a lasting addition to the full cannon of popular music. I'm not saying i like them - hell I can't stand metallica, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate skill and talent when I see it. I also reserve the right to consider led zeppelin truly awful and just a total waste of space. But fashion come or fashion go - Rock will roll on and on for a long time yet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUBwognTvN4 And for a truly contemporary take on things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srT0pgC_yto And from teenage popular tv star the evolution of taylor momsen over the last 10 years had been nothing but phenomenal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=As03tlODkdw Music is in fine fettle, you just have to learn to tune out the dross :-) |
Title: Re: Music Round-Robin Post by Morphy on Sep 26th, 2021 at 3:59pm
I like your optimism CA but at lest in America Rock hasnt been the driving force of anything for at least 10-15 years. At least.
Dont see that changing anytime soon unfortunately. I like music from all the decades I mentioned as well as some Jazz and Swing. All good stuff. Speaking of rock though if you have a Switch you might consider getting the game Risk of Rain 2. The sound track is great and the game has generally speaking great reviews. |

Lol, we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. To me grunge was a lot like punk. Anyone could do it and nobody really cared about the singing or music, it was all about the 'cultural' impact and zeitgeist of the time. Two things that have never played any part in my choosing anything, ever. I've never given social relevance or contemporary mores any thought when it comes to music. Culturally - who gives a crap. I just like music for the music. :-) And for me the actual singing is the most important aspect. So never really gone for classical music, as any singing tends to be in foreign :-) It's good for lifts/elevators..... In times past you'd have found me at the music halls, not the opera. Lol I'll pop Noddy holder and Slade in here. It's been a seasonal classic since I was 4. And for me Christmas doesn't truly start until Noddy tells me it has :-) https://youtu.be/BpfHSqLXePI |

A bump for this topic, and a short story.
So I was at a brewery this evening with a few friends. As we're walking out at the end of the night, my buddy says "What a night". I said "Yeah, just like that Four Seasons song". He wasn't familiar with them, but it's not a type of music he normally listens to. All good. We head home. As I'm approaching my house, December 1963 comes on the radio. It was really strange. But I jammed to that up the street and into my driveway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTUhnIY3oRM |
