Title: 2017 SITH
Post by vetryan15 on Nov 6th, 2017 at 8:40am
I know it's a little bit early,  but I figured we could set this up, to where we can have the opportunity to get a good amount of people prepared to join if wanted. Fir the members that domt know its called. SITH,  Sling in the hat. It's a holiday trade of a sling with forum members.I was thinking to end the sign up around the 1st of December.  I for one am in on this.

I am in!  Thank you VetRyan for starting the annual SITH.

I though that we were celebrating the anniversary of the Sith taking revenge on Anakin Skywalker for whining about sand.

Still not sure what Padme Amidala ever saw in him.

Lol if you check the last two sith's, you'll see i put the names on paperinto a hat abd phoebe sticks her head into the hat and the paper sticks to her nose :-) i then remove it before she eats it.

Anyone else around at the time also gets to pick names.
Nothing if not thorough :-)

I'm the only person who doesn't pick a name.
Not that I'd cheat

lol just snuck in :-)

SITH is now CLOSED

I'll sort out partifcipants and do the drawer later.

Got to figure out how to include christian who signed up on facebook :-)

Okay the line up this year is:

Vetryan15

Curious Aardvark
Blue raja
Drakolith
Mersa
JudoP
Walter
Shale
Vlad
woodssj
Teg
The jackinati
Balearic Slinger

Got  a special hat to drw them from.
Watch this space :-)

You know it's random because I didn't get: luis, teg or hubert :-) Actually I laready have slings from luis and hubert.

And the result is - quite interesting actually :-)

vetryan15 sends to christian sam

christian sends to kicktheotter

kicktheotter sends to judop

judop sends to curious aardvark

curious aardvark sends to blue raja

blue raja sends to hubert

Hubert sends to the jackinati (luck guy)

jackinati sends to Balearic slinger

Balearic slinger sends to Vlad (lucky guy)

Vlad sends to flslinger

flslinger sends to woodssj

woodssj sends to Mersa

mersa sends to shale

shale sends to drakolith

drakolith sends to Teg

and teg sends to walter

Some interesting exchanges there.

I'll get christians address for you vetryan, already got kicktheotters to give to christan.
So that's that.

Everyone else contact the person you're sending to and get their address.
Looks like at least 6 countries represented.

Any problems let me know and I'll try and sort them out.

Merry Christmas :-)

Title: Re: 2017 SITH

Just got it in the post today  :)

It's a sisal split pouch of about 30'' cntr pouch to end of fingerloop, looks like 6-8 cord tapering down to 3-4 at the end.

Nice to see the cords have been pre-soaked (I'm guessing) greatly increasing it's pliability, but still fairly low stretch for quite a thin sling- I approve  8-)

Also had several bars of Finnish choc which are delicious. I've nearly chomped them all already.

I'm hoping to get out tomorrow to sling if the weather finally turns- so will have to test it. It's been the first time in about 3-4 months and I'm missing it a lot!

CA -

Thank you!

I opened your package and shot the leather pouch sling - Wow!  I gained about 20 yards slinging a golf ball.  However, it faded (left to right for a right handed golfer) which my golfer son explains is not desirable.  I think that this is me getting used to the sling - which is fantastic.

I am rethinking my pouch design, the way I attach the cords to the pouch and the retention loop (so just about everything!) based on your leather pouch sling.

Can you direct me to a template for the pouch?

I have not tried the 3D printed pouch yet.  I will report on it later.

The cap paul template is around. Not sure if I ever updated to the fettled one I use. Plus I also adjust when I punch the holes to give  wider pouch once riveted.

I'll dig out the pdf and adjust.
Meanwhile here's the adjusted pdf and link to original thread, They are awesome slings

Quote:
Here's the cap paul sling pouch pdf.
Again print out on a4 for a tennis ball sized pouch and a5 for golfball Smiley

These are the rivets I use. https://www.amazon.com/DOMED-RIVETS-Diameter-Leather-Craft/dp/B06XHX1NB4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1515342582&sr=8-2&keywords=domed+rivets

I like to hammer the living crap out of them to make them totally flat.
The pouches are virtually indestructible. I always use replaceable cords, that way you can have one pouch and as many lengths of cord as you like.
Keep the loops fairly long and they are easy to change. Plus the knot helps open the pouch up for missile release.

And yes, golf balls will curve like a bastard. I can shoot right angles with a golf ball. It's the extra spin you get from the elongated pouch.
Try it with a clay glande - you'll get way more spin and distance :-)
Just happen to know a bloke who makes custom moulds for clay glandes :-)

You should get a straighter throwmwith the plastic pouch, as it's a lot smoother should impart less spin to a golfball. Certain;y gives straighter throws with tennis ball than the leather pouches.

You spot the laser engraving yet ?

OKay these are not the exact same slings judop sent me.
But apart from shorter cords on the leather 'seatbelt' pouch they are the same :-)

I call the braided and stitched leather pouch a shepherd sling. He calls it an apache, either way It's one of the bext examples of the breed that I have.

CA - thank you for the additional information. I am working on a sling based on the leather one that you sent me. I used the Cap Paul template. It just fits a golf ball - I can see where an elongated pouch would be better.

Thanks for the rivet link. I am using paper brads for now.

I will check out the 3D sling next - busy week at the office!

Here is an example of my imitation of your sling.

why have you got extra flaps on the left hand side ?
Also why is the cord attached sideways - actuvely keeping the pouch closed ?
Both those will bugger up the release.

Not sure you've grasped how the template works :-)

CA - This was my first effort with this pouch and your attachment system. Your advice is solicited and welcomed.

I followed the template when I cut the leather. Not sure what you are referencing as far as extra flaps on the left side.

Also, I followed your cord attachment instructions.  Not sure what you are referencing as far as attaching the cord sideways.

I am going to keep working on it. I look forward to more details.

Thank you!

Look at this pouch:

pn the left hand side you have two flaps that should not be there - that side should be identical to the other side - it's a symmetrical template. Somewhere down the line you've added extra bits.
Also if you look at the left side cords, they have been attached sideways, holding the flaps (which shouldn't be there) closed. Both sides should look the same and be attached the same.

Look at this and you should be able to see what I mean.

The only difference between the full size pouch and the golf ball pouch templates is the full size one is printed out on A4 paper and the golf ball one printed on A5.  Although I use the full size pouch for everything.
Here's the cap paul I sent you: http://slinging.org/forum/yabbfiles/Attachments/captain_paul_sling_pouch_template.pdf

And here's sort of what I think you used - though again no clue where the extra left side flaps came from:

Looks like you used lakeslingers pouch without following his instrustions - which are quite different from mine :-)
Also lakeslingers pouch has no rivets.
Actually re-reading lightslingers instructions and looking at his finished pouch. His instructions are completely wrong lol
flaps 12&3 go together and 4 stays by itself. If you fold flap 2 to 4 as he says you end up with a folded and sealed piece of leather, not a pouch

Again, that you for your help.

The golf ball test - final photo.  I can really fling a golf ball w/ yours and it is now my favorite sling. I would like to have a few more for a back-up and to give away. I followed your design and the template as best as I could.  I see that mine needs more work. Also, I have not tried mine yet as I have not completed the leather retention loop or the release knot.

Looking forward to instructions on adjusting the template - the pouch is too deep and too short.

Thank you again!

too deep and too short for what ?

Also bear in mind the holes on the template are not 'quite' where I punch mine.
I kind of move each punch point slightly diagonally upwards and out a bit, so the punch just intersects the original marking. It's pretty minimal but does open the pouch up quite a lot.

Practice with some paper or a plastic bag :-)

And yeah, your original photo was a different sling.

too deep and too short to get good flight - I think. Again, I have not tested it yet. I will report back once I test it

Ansel Adams observed that photographs are abstracts. I photographed the same Cap Paul sling - I only built one thus far.

Thanks again for your help and encouragement.

the other thing is that the big knots on the loop attachments are functional. They help open the pouch out to give a really clean release.

I've heard people here complain that their missile is hitting the release cord. This helps prevent that.

Nothing about the sling is accidental :-)

My package from Christian arrived today!

One of the beautiful Tibetan slings (really nice electric blue edging to it), a replica Roman lead glande and a replica Celtic clay bullet. All in all a pretty awesome package :D

It's really interesting to have a proper lead and clay glande as I've only ever used rocks and tennis balls and it's interesting just how small they are. I haven't done that much research into lead and clay bullet weights and sizes but I've always imagined them to be much larger because of the huge stones I use. Seeing these examples though I'm seeing just how deadly these ammo types were and still are and it's not surprising the Romans had to invent tools to take the lead bullets out of people. That thing could really do some damage against bare skin or light clothing.

I had a great SITH! Mersa's sling arrived a couple of week's ago. It's a split-pouch sling that is made of dyneema cord and optimized for smaller round projectiles. I really like the dyneema, the sling feels great in the hand. Unfortunately, the weather has been terrible so I have only been able to throw a few stones. I look forward to using it more this summer. Thanks Mersa!

No problem shale!!
I left the arms long so there's some room to adjust if need be.
I think it likes lead too ;D

I've still got a Sling or two to make. Since it is Luis Pons Livermore that I have to give to I can't just make a crappy sling...

Though my best effort would still probably be pretty crappy in comparison.

One day soon though, I'll surpass everyone! :P

That green and white one looks like it has a pretty nice pattern to it. I think I need to make some more effort when it comes to aesthetics when I make my slings...

That pattern is really easy to get: Just one of the three strand-groups in the braid is green. Once you start braiding, it creates the pattern itself. The only problem is trying to balance that one strand in the pouch.

Honestly, if I ever get the tools to do it properly, I'll start covering the pouch with leather to make it more durable, and to hide the ugly splices and pattern gone awry.

But first, I'm going to try to master this pattern.

A parcel awaited me containing the SITH sling from Drakolith.

Braided kevlar coated with craft glue, sewn on leather pouch, wooden bead, roughly 60 cm long.

Thank you!
