Issue no. 3 (1994), some students of Roman military things / reenactors have a go at slinging. They try in during one session, and discover how hard it is.

Very interesting.

I wonder how many tries it would take to hit such a target though... (for me it would be hundreds most likely)

It seems that these sling researchers need to get in contact with someone from this forum to get a better picture of the power of the sling. It seems most keen amateurs can eventually achieve 200m or more with good stones, so professionals using lead glandes must be significantly further than this.

Also, I imagine they were using poorly constructed slings if they couldn't manage helicopter style without losing stones.

That reminds me of other tests Ive seen where practicality is usually not high on the list of requirments. I imagine 1 or 2 hits out of several hundred would have still been considered a success. If nothing else it shows what is possible.
