Title: One piece leather slings
Post by Tomas on Nov 3rd, 2016 at 5:41pm
Hi all,
Been busy and haven't posted much but I didn't completely forget about slinging! I made a one piece leather sling recently and think it's a sellable/marketable item.
I will post a picture in the next days but I've used the rough copy to some extent and it wears well and works well too!
I think it will last a long time and wasn't overly labor intensive to make compared to the braided and woven ones - About an hour's work.
Once I post a pic of the finished product(it's a sleek beast) I'll ask you guys what you think of my price for it. Maybe I'll offer a discount to members as well:)

Yeah, I'm interested too.  My leather sling went through the wash and dryer, and I need a new one.

Here's the specs
The pouch is 9"  end to end from where the taper starts. The split is 4.5". Each arm of the pouch is 1/2" wide.
The retention cord is 3/8" wide and the release cord starts the same and narrows down to just under 1/4" at the tip.
The retention cord come from the shoulder of the cow and is thicker than the release cord which is towards the rear of the animal. Goes from about 12 oz leather at its thick end to 9 oz at the release end.

Length is 29".
The leather is saddle skirting which means it's tough. I waxed the sling with a beeswax compound and the thread is waxed handstitching thread.

Really sharp looking!

Can I suggest some whipping where the retention loop joins w/ the retention cord? I am sure that the stitching is strong and will not come apart. However, your customers may perceive it as a weak point.

That can always be a customer request:)
Aesthetically, I don't really like whipping myself though

that looks anazing. Great job.  The leather looks like it's from a dog leash. Pretty cool

Title: Re: One piece leather slings
Post by Tomas on Nov 10th, 2016 at 8:07am
@Vetryan15 - it's the same leather I use for making dog leashes. It's expensive and dulls my knife blades really quick but it's worth the cost and extra effort.

So pricing now...
If I were to sell it as is, with burnished edges and the stamped accents, I would want $45.
If one wanted a more affordable option, I can leave out the stamped accents and leave the edges unburnished although still rounded off for $30.
Seem fair?

On the first page is a full picture. Damn it looks nice... I dread to think what the shipping would be and I'll never be able to justify out to the significant other.

@CA, the first page has the  full pic.

@Tomas. It definitely looked like the dog leash leather,  it's really heavy duty stuff.  I personally think it's a great deal.

@kicktheotter- based on a previous sling trade from SITH exchange, I think I shipped the sling to Germany for about $12 Canadian currency

Thanks as well Vetryan15, I was going to charge more but I enjoy this community and couldn't bring myself to do it.

So this would be 39€ including shipping? If the converter is right anyway. Hmmm... It does look very nice...

What sort of dimensions does it have?

Thanks man, I have made many slings of the woven and braided variety but this one is a personal favorite of mine

Now that I see the stitching close up - def. no need for whipping, which would be strictly a matter of aesthetics. I happen to like it but it would take away from your design.  Really nice work!

So is this one available to buy or is it just to show what's to come?

Title: Re: One piece leather slings
Post by Tomas on Nov 11th, 2016 at 1:48pm
This one was used today! I slung some quinces( similar to a crab apple) and some stones with it. It is starting to break in quite nicely. I have one that's about a year old that is broken in and supple but still strong.
Since this one has dirt and quince juice on it I can't sell it.
I still have plenty of that leather left and am more than happy to make you one.
You can inbox me with details if you like.

Yes it's doable but not economical to sell. Still, it would be a mint piece

Tomas,

The one piece leather sling really looks beautiful. I like the beveled edges, they give a nice finished look to it. Did you come up with the one-piece idea yourself, or is it based off some existing slings? It's a design I've liked the idea of, ever since I came across some one-piece slings from Siberia, but never actually made myself. I don't know that I could have done it so nicely, so it's fun to see your work.

Thanks Mr. Potter!
I have never seen any one piece leather slings before so it is entirely my own creation. Half the work is burnishing the edges so I'm glad you appreciate them.
If you have any pictures of these Siberian models I would be interested to see them.

The examples I've come across are in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History: https://anthro.amnh.org/anthropology/databases/common/image_dup.cfm?catno=70%20%20%2F%203388

Some of those Siberian slings are one piece and some are not, but they all seem to share a similar leather split pouch.

By the way, there are a lot of other interesting slings in the AMNH collection from other parts of the world, and the online database is a great resource.

Holy Mack! So many slings! I want to make this one
https://anthro.amnh.org/anthropology/databases/common/image_dup.cfm?catno=16%20%20%2F%202022

And this one reminds me of Teg's project from a year or more ago. The pouch construction is what I'm referring to.
https://anthro.amnh.org/anthropology/databases/common/image_dup.cfm?catno=40%2E1%2F%202030

And I'm curious as to why so many of the South American slings have such long extended pouches. Is it ceremonial? Does it help stabilize the throw?

with the south american slings - many of them double as tump lines (think that's the right word) - so the long pouch is to wrap round your forehead.

Some of the historical artifacts aren't actually throwing slings at all.

Thomas, I really like the look of these slings, I’d really like to make my own, very customized version. So, if you don’t mind could you explain how you make them? If you don’t mind telling me, could even PM me if you’d like. Or do I have to buy one to figure it all out?  ;D

That solid pouch sling is striking. The tapering from the pouch makes for a professional look on a rugged looking sling.

Hey sorry I haven’t logged on in a while.
The way I make the slings requires a few specialized leather working tools to make. If you buy one I’ll make a video tutorial for you on how I make them and share it with everybody.
Let me know what you think
